Blizzard vs. Glider Battle Resumes Next Week

Daswolfen Re:I like living in the future. (384 comments)

I have to disagree. Or at least I am an outlier. I have been playing video games since pong (my school had a pinball machine (cost a dime!) and a pong cocktail table game in the HS student lounge and I would play every day after school (this is late 70s). During the 80s I lived in the local arcade, owned most every home console system (and still do plus all the ones in between). I have been playing video games for over 3 decades now. And I have been playing WoW pretty much since launch. I have been a hardcore raider and I have been a purely casual player ( and I currently sit somewhere in between). WoW makes plenty of sense to me, but then again, I also have an extensive pen and paper RPG background as well.

When We Finally Meet Aliens, They Will Probably Be...

Daswolfen Re:Much more primitive than we expect (648 comments)

Actually we could get to the another solar system like Alpha Centari with current (either existing or in testing) technology, but it would take a while (like a century or two) and be almost 5 years before any data came back after that.

First Impressions of the 11th Doctor Who

Daswolfen Re:post title (379 comments)

Tennant was ok, but only about #3 or #4 on the list... I put Tom Baker at #1, Patrick Troughton #2 and probably Tennant, but if he keeps up, Matt Smith might just take #3 or even the #2 spot.

First Impressions of the 11th Doctor Who

Daswolfen Re:Watched it, impressed! (379 comments)

I think the new Doctor will work out fine. He reminds me a bit of my favorite Doctor, Tom Baker (the 4th). And all through the new series with Eccleston and Tennant, there really wasn't a 'Fuck Yeah' moment (as far as I was concerned). This had that. I don't want to give anything away from those waiting for the BBC America showing, but you will know it when you see it.

Ars Technica Inveighs Against Ad Blocking

Daswolfen Re:It's the freeloaders time (1051 comments)

As far as I am concerned, its not about the ad, its about the safety. I only block ads because they are a vector of infection. Can you guarantee that ads are safe? No? Then get off your self pretentious soapbox. If content costs so much, then the creator will either find an revenue stream that doesn't include ads (and honestly... this is 2010. Who clicks ads anymore) or they will fold.

Blizzard Authenticators May Become Mandatory

Daswolfen Re:No thanks (248 comments)

I have an authenticator and not the best eyesight and do not have a problem reading the numbers. Of course, I only got the authenticator because they were giving an in-game pet with it and I am such a geek, I had to have it :) I have been playing since launch, and have never been hacked, but when one of the officers of my guild got hacked and the GB cleaned out (and it took weeks to get only 80% restored) I figured that the investment is well worth it.

Engaging With Climate Skeptics

Daswolfen Climate Change is real. (822 comments)

Man made Climate change is a political tool to further the agenda of the greens. That large flaming ball of gas at the center of our solar system has more impact on the Earths climate than man does.

Surfacescapes D&D Demo

Daswolfen Re:oh that was a stretch... (162 comments)

What people seem to miss is that a Role Playing Game is not a Wargame. It may have simulation elements, but it's - at its roots - a narrative game.

The direction Wizards of the Coast have been taking D&D in for several years now is one of intergration with the miniatures game (and to a lesser extent, the MMORPG) with traditional roleplaying falling increasingly by the wayside. The story no longer matters to a significant portion of the current generation of gamers.

On a more personal note, when I first saw the Surface demoed, my initial instinct was that this would be perfect for Battletech or other miniature based games, but would need some work when it came to RPGs. As far as the DM 'fudging' rolls for the story, we didnt see enough of how the DM station works to assume that is not built in. I am sure there is an override roll button built into the rolling interface on that station.

Review: Champions Online

Daswolfen Re:FIST SPORT (203 comments)

As a Champions player, I can tell you there are places in the game where role playing is going on. They have built several clubs and other areas for players to gather and roleplay. They do a much better job promoting the RPG aspect of the MMORPG game (notice the last bit... its RPG, stands for ROLE PLAYING GAME) than a lot of other games.

What it boils down to is, you play how you want to play.
