Dad Builds 700 Pound Cannon for Son's Birthday

I would love to be the kind of dad who could do this, but my daughter would prefer it in pink or come with horses & cell phone.

Getting Beyond the Helldesk

Defectuous Re:Take the shit to get the cream (474 comments)

I recant this AC's previous statement,

My advice to you is to show your potential. Just sitting there doing the same thing day in day out shows how much of a drone you are. I spent several years working as a support drone myself mainly due to the fact I was lazy and really had no ambition to move up.having a Kid makes you rethink everything. I show them what you can do and at every opportunity apply for those jobs as they come up. Do not sit content until your in the position of your chose or employment of your choosing.

California To Move To Online Textbooks

Defectuous Oppurtunity comes a knockin (468 comments)

I look at this as a opportunity for Kindle to sell the idea of using them instead of books. other than Amazon making a bundle on book sales, they would have a kindle in every students hands. Course if they broke the school could sell the student one for a profit.and the family could transfer the books to the new device. All I see with this idea is PROFIT, PROFIT, PROFIT

Asus Slaps Linux In the Face

Defectuous Re:Lame site, and a bizarre video (644 comments)

I had to watch for this and spent maybe 3-4 minutes replaying that section of the video just to be safe. While at first glace the guy is doing that particular salute he's just calling for a cab. Still it would make a great 3-4 second spot to throw up on youtube and start calling Microsoft the next nazi goverment.
Who knows maybe you'll be arrested for slander, or protected by freedom of speech. maybe...

Apple Plans $1 Billion iDataCenter

Defectuous Re:Tax breaks for the rich? (260 comments)

If I had mod points I would so give you "Informative". If this was done on a federal level, then we would not have as much a concern over illegal immigrants coming to live and work in this country would pay their fair share.

Sarah Connor Chronicles — Why It Died

Defectuous Re:Actually the 'fanboy' wrote a nice piece (834 comments)

I found the series a few episodes in, I do admit I was lost & intrigued, but I then spent the time to actually start from pilot. From then on I have not missed the show.
The storyline had a core plot, then at last count seven major sub plots. Several of them had been sorted out by the end of the last season opening up another major set of plots.
While I do agree the Terminator franchise had both a positive & negative impact on the show. It could of just been "The Connor Chronicles" and it might of had a chance. But without the Terminator name it also probably did not get it's initial start.
This mostly my opinion and all, I feel that it was the better choice to keep over Dollhouse even if just for another season. This coming from a Whedonite fan on all his projects.

Australia, UK To Test Vehicle Speed-Limiting Devices

Defectuous Re:From TFA (859 comments)

Yet I feel this will be sold as a tool for parents to control their children. Sell it with a GPS tracking package. Ability to track your child's driving history. " Is teenage Susan going to Jenny's house or Johnny's. Well now you can know the truth. " I can see the GPs used to track movements as cops are tracking teens via myspace & facebook to find out when & where the local parties are going on.
I see the merit, but when my child can drive I hope that I can place my trust her driving. I have 10 years to find out.

What Data Center Designers Can Learn From Legos

Defectuous Re:Legos (210 comments)

As my retired language arts(English) teacher said. Ebonics is one of the many reasons to why children these days cannot actually pronounce things properly.
As for the mixed tense sentence, I do not know.
For eye-rack instead of ee-raq, it falls back to those who apperently cannot pronounce a work and rely on the media to pronounce if for them. As for soldier, I have always pronounced it "sol-jer" but back to the previous statement, I blame Ebonics & mostly the Media for the stupidity of America today, including myself. it doesn't help that parents fear their children. But that is a different subject.

Solar Power Pre-Deployment To Afghanistan?

Defectuous Having a Solio would he handy (184 comments)

Looking at this, the AA batteries thing is true, but having your own power is handy as well. I suggest something that has rechargeable AA's. not to be green or anything, just covers your bases on both fronts.

I suggest looking at having something from Solio
http://www.solio.com/

I swear by mine, use it while biking & camping most of last summer.

Local Police Want To Jam Wireless Signals

Defectuous Re:This will come up (317 comments)

In that particular case if you read the article linked. The money for those TV's came from inmates through purchase of food and other personal items. Any excess funds was saved for inmate's benefits. I do not dis-agree with this, as to blanketing the prison I am defiantly in support of it. As long as there was a solid reason for such.

How Does a 9/80 Work Schedule Work Out?

Defectuous 9/80 isn't bad (1055 comments)

My last job did this, and it worked out pretty good for me. but I also made myself unreachable on my days off. We actually had two groups Team A had the first Friday off while Team B has the second Friday off. I got a lot of flack for not being reachable, but I tried to not leave any loose threads so they had to call me.
I am where I am at now due to the major raise offered and bennies. But I Also work 4 10's and I am on call one week a month. Which will bring me in at all hours.

Apple Intros 17" Unibody MBP, DRM-Free iTunes

Defectuous Price Limits (1079 comments)

As long as the song prices remain reasonable for the songs I am after. I have no issues with it. I had no problems with the $.99 a song. As long as I did not have to buy the album. I got the songs I wanted. The DRM was annoying, but I burned it all to an Emulation CD(Iso) and re-ripped it to be DRM Free. The DRM Free makes it easier to work with. So that's props in my book.
As for a price limit, I'd be looking at no more $2 per song, before I start looking at torrents. And defiantly less than $15 per Album.

BBC's iPlayer Chief Pushes Tiered Charging For ISPs

Defectuous A Simple Solution (172 comments)

ok, I did not finish the article before this came to mind. BIG MEDIA MOGUL Buys several media cache(type) servers and places them behind the top 10(20) major ISP's and have the media cached on those servers. Then when a person goes to watch/listen content it's streamed from their intranet rather than directly from the BBC's core streaming servers and if it's a live feed the BBC actually saves money on bandwidth as they will only be streaming to fewer sources. Am I the only person that see's how this will save everyone money ?

How To Help Our Public Schools With Technology?

Defectuous Re:Put out the word (378 comments)

I beleive the Portland Public Schools did this at some point a few years back & the response was overwhelming for those who we're setting up and maintaining the school systems. As for an OS, defiantly would love to see more Linux desktops out there.

Starting with one school, have the kids in the different classrooms start to write to various companies that use computers and ask for donations of old computers, monitors, money, etc and be prepared for the overwhelming support you get. Also, there is a lot of support from computer servicing places that just trash their old 'puters. Good luck.
