I don't have the luxury to separate between computer room and bed room... so: 6 from the PC (another 4 can be turned off, so don't count), 8 from the router, 1 from the mobile HD, 1 from the UPS, 5 from the cable modem... it's a goddamn disco there

Time To Dump XP?

DemonBeaver Re:Gartner is shilling (1213 comments)

then maybe M$ will get the message through their thick skulls!

Yes, how dare they make a new product and sell it?! We'll teach them the hard way, and maybe they'll learn that they're just expected to go on supporting their old products, without shamelessly trying to make more revenue!

Baffled By the Obsession With Pretend-Business Games

DemonBeaver Re:Actually, I disagree (252 comments)

If the companies hadn't pushed 3D back then, the market for VGA's wouldn't have become bigger, and we would never have the technology we have today.
If you think that today's 3D AAA games are dumbed down, have a look at Dragon Age, Stalker or Dawn of War 2.

Defending Against Drones

DemonBeaver Re:Bad comparison (368 comments)

That is true, but if each plane that is not shot down causes damage worth 5 million dollars (yeah, I know, they can't... just pointing out my intention), not to mention the cost in human lives, then it's perfectly logical to shoot them down with 3 million dollar missiles. Obviously, if there was a 10k alternative, that would be much better...

Defending Against Drones

DemonBeaver Bad comparison (368 comments)

You shouldn't compare the price of the defense to the price of the weapon, but rather to the damage it can do.

Where Microsoft's Profits Come From

DemonBeaver Re:Interesting graph! (295 comments)

I don't think you read it correctly: while OS sales rise and fall (and rise like crazy with Windows 7), the rest remain more or less constant, as each is only marked by the width of their band (for example, Office constantly provides slightly less than $4B).
Or would you believe that Microsoft makes twice as much from Office as it does from Windows?

Why the First Cowboy To Draw Always Gets Shot

DemonBeaver Re:Unforgivable! (398 comments)

The by far most realistic duel I've seen in a movie was the one between Dick Liddil and Wood Hite in "The Assassination of Jesse James by the coward Robert Ford" (holy crap, long title... not as long as the movie, though). The duel was in a room with one of them sitting on a bed, and they empty their guns at each other from about two meters away, and no one gets hurt...

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Tops 10 Million Sales

DemonBeaver Re:I have to give props to Nintendo for (164 comments)

I sat down during my first year of college, and finished the game 100%. It was great fun, even though the tech is indeed ancient. About the only annoying thing would be the control scheme. While controlling Mario himself was fairly standard (analog stick), the camera was straight from hell. Controlled very grossly by the four C-buttons, and prone to turn around whenever it felt like it. I must have walked in a door just to accidentally walk right out again a hundred times...

New Ubisoft DRM Cracked Within One Day Of Release

DemonBeaver DemonBeaver writes  |  more than 4 years ago

DemonBeaver (1485573) writes "There has been a great uproar about Ubisoft's new DRM scheme lately, deemed uncrackable by the company, draconian and user-unfriendly by many gamers, since it requires a constant connection to their servers at any time, and boots you out of the game in case that connection drops.
One day after the release of Silent Hunter 5, the first game to implement the new scheme, it has been cracked."

Ask Slashdot: Low End VGA Quality

DemonBeaver DemonBeaver writes  |  more than 5 years ago

DemonBeaver writes "I am about to buy a new computer for my family. As it usually goes, it really means I buy myself a new computer and give them my old one. Trying to save costs, I want to take my relatively old, but very strong VGA with me to the new computer, and buy them a cheap new one. But looking at the local vendors offering (I live somewhere below the lower back of this fair world), there aren't many such cards. Their supply consists of the cheaper models by ASUS, Gigabyte, Sapphire. But I don't feel like buying a card just to have to invest in a better one half a year later. So what I am wondering is whether such cards are more likely to fail on a longer timescale? Is the cheap price only because of their low performance, or are they also less durable? And do any of you have good experience with specific low-end cards?"
