AT&T Introduces "Sponsored Data" Allowing Services to Bypass 4G Data Caps

DigiWood Re:Double Dipping (229 comments)

AT&T isn't just an ISP. They are a top tier carrier. I would hope that the same rules apply.

AT&T Introduces "Sponsored Data" Allowing Services to Bypass 4G Data Caps

DigiWood Double Dipping (229 comments)

This is called "double dipping". These providers are not supposed to be able to do this according to the common carrier rules. The subscriber pays and they get their allotment. Any other payments to "overlook" a data cap that are made by a third party violates the common carrier rules because it creates an unfair advantage for large companies. They can afford to pay a fee to basically make the little guy penalized (having the little guys data count against the subscriber). If the subscribers complained to the FCC this pilot project would be stopped dead in its tracks.

I fear though that the only people that would care are the technically minded subscribers. The others would be snowed by some marketing speak.

Internet Commenting Growing Away From Anonymity

DigiWood Re:Yes, because moderation is oh so hard to do (384 comments)

Companies like the ones you mentioned are all about not paying someone to do what to you and I would be something simple: Moderate the discussion. They also don't want the readership doing the moderation because that could potentially be at odds with the publications owners views.

Ask Slashdot: What To Do With New Free Time?

DigiWood Enrich Your Creative Life (299 comments)

I can understand a lot of the comments here suggesting that you write an app, contribute to an OSS project, etc. How about learning a musical instrument. Something you have never played. It's a skill that you can share with others and pass down to your children.

Entertainment Industry's Dystopia of the Future

DigiWood Sad State of the US (394 comments)

The US used to be a technological super power. Now the US is all about suing everyone into submission. I have friends from abroad that won't travel to the US because of the draconian process they have to go through to enter the country. TSA agents taking high tech electronics. Invasive searches and questioning. All for what? A false sense of security. The TSA rent-a-cops didn't stop the guy over Christmas 2009. The passengers of the flight did. And having government officials police copyright is laughable. How can they tell what is legit and what is not? This will just make air travel that much more irrelevant. I will be taking a train when travelling from now on. I don't travel outside the US, so that will work for me. Yeah it takes more time. Oh well.

Anti-Technology Themes in James Cameron's Avatar

DigiWood Re:White people suck in space (870 comments)

It's not about "race." It's about heritage. Last I looked we were all from the HUMAN race. What makes us distinct is our heritage, genetic or otherwise. People make more conflicts about the color of ones skin or what they believe happens in the afterlife than most other things these days.

Slashdotters are so good at wanting the right terms used when describing "hackers." Same should apply here. Sooner we all realize we are of one race the better.

Telecoms Announce "One Voice" Initiative To Promote LTE Wireless Broadband Stand

DigiWood Isn't this what SIP is for? (39 comments)

SIP provides the control part of the stream as well as messaging (think SMS or IM). RTP is used along side SIP for media. That media can be voice or video. Throw in some QoS so that the data that is along side the SIP and RTP media doesn't overwhelm the pipe and you have a workable, scalable solution based on open standards. No need to come up with a brand new protocol when one already exists and is in use on IP networks around the world.

How To Help a Friend With an MMO Addiction?

DigiWood MMO Addiction? (811 comments)

Many years ago I played EQ whenever I had a spare moment. People brandished the words addiction around when speaking of me. I would think up ways to not have to do things just so I could sit home and play.

You know what? I got over the game. It didn't ruin my life. I wasn't put on meds to combat the urge to play. I simply found other things that interested me and moved on. Do I still play MMO's. Yep. 2-3 hours a week. Not per day. I spend most of my time reading books (yeah dead tree books), designing compact computing devices and enjoying my dogs.

I think you need to be understanding and maybe find out what your friend is getting from the game that he/she isn't getting in RL. I figured that out for myself. Maybe they need your help.

Just be understanding.
