Physical Media: Down, But Maybe Not Out

DinDaddy Re:Meh. (116 comments)

Similar here, although I do buy some new releases when they hit about $15 if I want them badly. But with Amazon discounting so many titles so much, we now have an unwatched backlog of blu-rays of probably 40 movies, which tempers my impulsiveness.

They have a pretty fair number of high profile movies that are as low as $5 that are less than 2 years old. Why the hell would I rent a stream for $4 when I can own the movie?

Apple's New Mac Pro Gets High Repairability Score

DinDaddy Re:Thunderbolt (234 comments)

Read Anandtech's review, he shows where all the I/O of the system is being used, which will show you why there is no second PCIe port.

Why Is Microsoft Setting More Money On Fire With Surface 2?

DinDaddy Re:don't tell Balmer this (616 comments)

That 5 minutes of frustration will drive anyone back to a real computer.

Seriously? Maybe people our age (going by your UID# I am going to assume we're of the same generation), but you're nuts if you think that is true of people under 30, or even 40.

Why Is Microsoft Setting More Money On Fire With Surface 2?

DinDaddy Re:Surface 2 Pro, for Pros (616 comments)

Apple, a high end company, became a device company and its been pulling them down to the lowest common denominator.

I am not clear what you mean by this. All Apple's products appear to be in the upper third of pricing for devices of their type. Are you referring to the categories of devices they have entered?

Apple Sued For Dividing Final Season of Breaking Bad Into Two On iTunes

DinDaddy Re:Why is Apple the one being sued? (458 comments)

Specifically, it said "This Season Pass includes all current and future episodes of Breaking Bad, The Final Season."

Apple Sued For Dividing Final Season of Breaking Bad Into Two On iTunes

DinDaddy Re: Why is Apple the one being sued? (458 comments)

Except, as noted elsewhere, terminology that is almost certainly written by Apple says "This Season Pass includes all current and future episodes of Breaking Bad, The Final Season.", since that is their boilerplate wording used everywhere.

That alone makes them liable in this case.

Explain how any whistleblower is supposed to expose something if they are not allowed to make information public that the public does not already have access to?

Obama Administration Overrules iPhone Trade Ban

DinDaddy Re:You missed one (397 comments)

The one that doesn't pay any corporation tax or tax on its vast cash stockpiles? I think you will find that for Apple Inc. is not a US company, at least as far as taxation goes.

I think you'll find Apple are not "the one" that does not pay any tax, but rather that describes all the corporations.

Obama Administration Overrules iPhone Trade Ban

DinDaddy Re:You know (397 comments)

The stated reason is due to it being based on action for a standards essential patent, not economic reasons. The presumption is eventual payment received through litigation will make the plaintiff whole, as licenses cannot be refused for SEPs. the only thing at issue is FRAND payment.

Early Surface Sales Pitiful

DinDaddy Re:Wasn't that expected? (251 comments)

Well, they thought the market had been penetrated the straightforward way, but there was still an available opening for them to penetrate it the MS way. You know.

Google Announces Android 4.3, Netflix, New Nexus 7, and Q Successor Chromecast

DinDaddy Re:Full HD (244 comments)

Because you hold the 5-11" screen 6-12" from your face, not 120" inches like your TV.

And yes you can see the difference. My middle aged farsighted vision can see it.

A Radical Plan For Saving Microsoft's Surface RT

DinDaddy Re:Too low, just try to be competitive! (391 comments)

The $900M is just to drop the price from $500 to $350 (6M units X $150).

If they are going to sell them for even less, they would need to take another/bigger write down. Shareholders hated the first one enough that it's not really an option.

Employers Switching From Payroll Checks To Prepaid Cards With Fees

DinDaddy Re:Union's purpose once reasonable goals achieved (1103 comments)

If companies tried to change the 40 hour work week then unions likely would enjoy a surge in popularity because then they would be fighting a worthy cause for reasonable working conditions.

If? There are already an awful lot of companies that squeeze more than 40 hour weeks out of people. Non-union fields, though, not surprisingly.

With Sales Down, Whale Meat Flogged As Source of Strength

DinDaddy Re:May Bel-Shamharoth eat their souls (311 comments)

I travel to Japan frequently, and a few years ago it was with somewhat disgusted amusement I read an editorial in a Tokyo newspaper about how whaling was beneficial, in that whales were largely to blame for depleted fisheries. They completely failed to reconcile, or even mention, how fish populations declining parallel whale population declines, or present any evidence for the assertion at all.

There is serious denial there.

Google Demands Microsoft Pull YouTube App For WP8

DinDaddy Re:And the day comes when... (716 comments)

Google hasn't sued anyone yet, they've set a deadline but it's not clear what action Google can take. There are several, including:

* Find ways to block the app

  * Embed ads in the raw video

  * Complete on-going switch to codecs Microsoft doesn't want to support

  * Place a "Windows serial number generator" on the front page of Google.com

You omitted the action they will actually take.

* File a suit in court and obtain an order compelling MS to remove the app and disable distributed copies.

Apple Now the Top PC Vendor, For Some Values of PC

DinDaddy Re:So tablets at PCs now? (577 comments)

Let's do a little trimming, editing and pushing things around in your post:

Can you easily create content on an iMac or Macbook? ... Well when looking at the biggest products on the platform, which is primarily time wasters like email, websurfing, playing flash games and updating facebook I would say that's a no

Whether *most* people use the device in question for content creation does not determine whether it is a computer. I know dozens of people who use their tablets to produce (art, music, video, photography). Might not be a business computer, but it is definitely a computer.

Microsoft Blames PC Makers For Windows Failure

DinDaddy Re:The problem is Windows 8 (913 comments)

Microsoft should have been there to take the lead. The android ecosystem just doesn't work well -- too many disparate devices, too much choice. People like uniformity and simplicity. They weren't.

They weren't positioned to and had no real hope of being.

Then Jobs died.

Not sure how MS capitalizes on that.

Then ios5 wiped out the maps application off your phone.

No, that was 6. And WP did not have something better at this point.

Then the iphone5 came out which didn't work with any of your existing power cables and docks.

Works fine with the cable that comes with it though. Not a misstep, its a transition. Not something significant enough for MS to make much headway, as it's not like WP7/8 and Win8 has a big hardware ecosystem with consistent accessories to leverage.

The high end market where you'd get an iphone as it just worked well now had stumbling blocks. It wasn't an obvious choice any more.

1 minor one going by what you've listed.

Then apple's share price fell.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? Your whole premise makes no sense.

Canadian Court Rejects US Demand For Full Access To Megaupload Servers

DinDaddy Re:Typical US Law Enforcement techniques.... (95 comments)

This is how the US authorities go after everything - with massive, overwhelming, completely unnecessary force. Ever see the video of the invasion of Kim's compound?

Except that was the New Zealand authorities. Acting at the insistence and direction of US authorities to be sure, though.

German decision requires secured wifi

DinDaddy DinDaddy writes  |  more than 4 years ago

DinDaddy (1168147) writes "A German court said the owner of an unsecured wifi point should be fined for allowing third party access resulting in illegal downloading. They went on to say simple first time password setting upon configuring the network was fine. So the security doesn't have to be effective. If I were German, I guess I'd jus set mine to the SSID of my network. Meets the criteria."

Aqua model of the Enterprise

DinDaddy DinDaddy writes  |  more than 5 years ago

DinDaddy (1168147) writes "Neat youtube video of something from a hobby I was unaware of, aquamodeling, where an individual from Japan has constructed a submarine R/C model of the 1701-A Enterprise and shot it maneuvering about in a swimming pool. Much more gratifying than the results I had a s kid of just photographing my model work against black backgrounds. See it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQEsG4eKIXs&feature=related"
