Scottish Independence Campaign Battles Over BBC Weather Forecast

DrSkwid British Rail (286 comments)

It has always amused me that in England the railways were known as British Rail, in Scotland they were known as ScotRail.

Since privatisation they are known as National Rail -

And ScotRail -

Indian Hustle: How Fraudsters Prey On Would-be US Tech Workers

DrSkwid Re:Why the exodus ? (124 comments)

India is a slum. People shit on the sidewalk in Mumbai. There is heartbreaking poverty everywhere you look. And stink and pollution.

If you had a chance to leave on a plane to the US you'd seen in the movies, you'd be off like a shot.

Shit, even if you'd only watched Jersey Shore and Real Wives of Portland you'd be off like a shot.

Shit, even if you'd only watched Trailer Park Boys you'd be off like a short (yes I know it's Canadian).

Microsoft Rumored To Integrate Android Apps

DrSkwid Re:History repeating itself (189 comments)

Also "Better Windows than Windows" meant developers could say "well, it runs Windows apps so we'll not bother making OS/2 versions".

Android apps on Windows phone would mean fewer Windows phone apps, not more, even if they started selling more handsets.

New JavaScript-Based Timing Attack Steals All Browser Source Data

DrSkwid Re:Yes, there is a simple fix (167 comments)

You obviously weren't doing it right.

NoScript for Firefox and equivalent for Chrome have a site-by-site whitelist. One only enables JS as required.

I have also found it instructional as to the amount of third party access sites are willing to sell. Particularly keen seem to be online newspapers. e.g. has Javascript served up from 15 domains.

Combine that with other add-ons like Ghostery and Self-Destructing-Cookies and you will be unpleasantly surprised at the unnecessary crap that's thrown at your browser for the benefit of the sites you visit.

You can't say its not overpriced until people start buying the things.

If no-one's buying them, they are overpriced.

How do you know it's not sustainable ?

Not knowing the future has nothing to do with sustainable agriculture.

Court Upholds Ruling On Dish Network's 'Hopper'

DrSkwid Re:Down the line... (248 comments)

Maybe they are just the ones you remember directly because you're not part of their target demographic and so they are jarring.

I often see products in sports that re-enforce my brand choices. Even as much as I dislike that sentence. They ride the same brand of motorbike as me, helmet, sunglasses, gloves etc. etc.

Court Upholds Ruling On Dish Network's 'Hopper'

DrSkwid Re:Down the line... (248 comments)

Salaries are not the issue.

We made a 1 1/2 hour feature film with *all* staff on a profit share. It still cost £50k.

Court Upholds Ruling On Dish Network's 'Hopper'

DrSkwid Re:Down the line... (248 comments)

"Product placement in films and international programmes (such as US drama series) has been allowed on UK television for many years. From 28 February 2011 TV programmes made for UK audiences can contain product placement as long as they comply with Ofcomâ(TM)s rules."

The Black Underbelly of Windows 8.1 'Blue'

DrSkwid Re:Expect more of this. (608 comments)

I use Windows because the Autodesk Software I get paid to use only runs on Windows.

I use Windows because the Eurosport TV Channel I paid for only runs on Silverlight on Windows.

I know these are choices *I* made but just saying, it's not always just "I can't be bothered to switch". I run FreeBSD and Plan 9 on the computers I don't need Win software on so it's not like it's even a hard switch for me.

ChromeOS is cheaper, Ubuntu is cheaper, an Android tablet is possibly cheaper.

Sent To Jail Because of a Software Bug

DrSkwid Re:Open Source... (239 comments)

You're talking shit.

I can buy from a vendor and get the source as part of the deal, no source, no deal.

If I reveal this source code to the sub-post offices and continue to buy from the vendor.

he alone will be fully able

DrSkwid DrSkwid writes  |  more than 10 years ago

If unwarned by my example, any man shall undertake and shall succeed in really constructing an engine ... upon difference principles or by simpler means, I have no fear of leaving my reputation in his charge, for he alone will be fully able to appreciate the nature of my efforts and the value of their results.

wildness of the schemes

DrSkwid DrSkwid writes  |  more than 10 years ago

Some of my critics have amused their readers with the wildness of the schemes I have occasionally thrown out; and I myself have sometimes smiled along with them. Perhaps it were wiser for present reputation to offer nothing but profoundly meditated plans, but I do not think knowledge will be most advanced by that course; such sparks may kindle the energies of other minds more favorably circumstanced for pursuing the enquiries.

Feeble Minds

I fear the people madly attempting to stop by their feeble arms the momentum of our enormous train.

The vacuum of time

Those whose minds are entirely unoccupied receive Linux with satisfaction, as filling up the vacuum of time.
