OS X Mountain Lion Review

DurendalMac Re:Apple still makes computers? (424 comments)

Yeah, Apple is going to phase out Macs, because disposing of billions of dollars of profit every quarter makes perfect sense, right? Apple makes lots of money from Macs. That is only one of many reasons that they're in no danger of dying off.

OS X Mountain Lion Review

DurendalMac Re:Gizmodo has a much more interesting article... (424 comments)

Eh, it's a double-edged sword. You can only play it safe for so long, but on the other hand, a radical shift can alienate the userbase. Just look at all the flak Metro is getting.

Developer Drops Game Price To $0 Citing Android Piracy

DurendalMac Re:Good news everyone! (433 comments)

And Apple is still making more from iPhones and the app ecosystem than the rest of the smartphone market combined. Yep, they sure got steamrolled!

Ask Slashdot: Good Low Cost Free Software For Protecting Kids Online?

DurendalMac Re:Protip: (646 comments)

Spoken like someone who does not have any kids. Newsflash: Even the best kids don't always listen to what mommy and/or daddy tell them. Furthermore, I'd say this is also to prevent unintentional access to nasty stuff. You can't sit there watching over their shoulder ever second they're online. Put the computer in the living room, sure, but it's not just deliberate access to the more visceral parts of the internet that you'd need to be worried about. At that age, it's probably more about the kids not realizing where they're clicking until they're watching 2 girls, 1 cup.

Women's Enrollment In Computer Science Correlates Negatively With Net Access

DurendalMac Re:Correlation/Causation? (314 comments)

Putting up with creepy neckbeards in the CS major? I've certainly seen it with the scant few women that were CS majors at my school.

Study Shows Teen Gamers Like Tech, But Don't All Crave IT Jobs

DurendalMac "Potentially designing video games" (227 comments)

From what I've seen, most of them think this means coming up with a few ideas and then finding someone else to do all the hard stuff. It's pathetic. Maybe 1% of that 50% will actually take it seriously, and even then a bunch of them may get 2-year technical school degrees that come printed on Charmin 2-ply. If they're lucky, they can get a job at EA getting paid peanuts while being chained up in the basement and eating hardtack and swill.

Analyzing the New MacBook Pro

DurendalMac Re:No, really more like 1440x900 (914 comments)

You can fit more actual data if the software is built for it. For example, FCPX is now built for it, so you'll probably be getting real 1080p resolution out of that video without filling the whole screen.

DurendalMac Re:No dvd drive is too soon for me (914 comments)

Because Apple isn't selling a Thunderbolt -> Ethernet adapter for a whopping $29 or anything.

Apple News From WWDC and iPhone 5 Rumors

DurendalMac Re:Retina Display is good and all, but... (683 comments)

Not necessarily. Apple has been working resolution independence into OS X for years now. Things that don't take advantage of the higher res may be doubled, but I think a lot of UI elements and such will be built to take advantage of the resolution without doubling.

This. I read this in an astronomy book a long time ago. Maybe now it's more certain, but really, this isn't big news.

'Eco-Anarchists' Targeting Nuclear and Nanotech Workers

DurendalMac Re:strategy of tension (426 comments)

A lot of people who call themselves "Anarchists" these days really aren't. Some still subscribe to the idea of no government and believe that it would work out for the best, but too many with that name are just assholes who want to break things.
