Chinese Hackers Steal Top US Weapons Designs

EW87 I deal with this everyday (395 comments)

I have several clients that are architectural firms, and weekly there is a new chinese rootkit trying to get into the system. They bury themselves into AutoCAD files and steal all drawing and design data and send it back to China. It's such a headache.

Ask Slashdot: Troubling Trend For Open Source Company

EW87 IT Consulting (451 comments)

I always ask customers who want free services to work for free for a day. They act shocked and disgusted I would ask them to work for free. It doesn't take too long for them to make the connection. You don't work for free, and neither do I.

Ask Slashdot: Getting a Grip On an Inherited IT Mess?

EW87 Been here, done it (424 comments)

I started as the lone IT administrator for a large commercial insurance company. With almost no documentation, I had to use some RMM tools (Kaseya) and other audit software like Belarc Advisor, and network sniffers to completely figure out everything going on in the company. There were so many terrible band aids, I even had to bring on a few helping hands to help get it done, it took a year. They have 64-bit/32-bit compatibility issues, they had Windows 7 on machines that were trying to run a DOS/Novell shared resource. It was extremely difficult and frustrating, and the pay wasn't as good as easier positions I've been in. However, it was an amazing day when it got completely done.

Gene Therapy Approach 'Completely' Protects Mice From HIV Infection

EW87 Re:Billions (190 comments)

Billions and Billions of dollars spent looking for a cure or vaccine for AIDS so that people can go around fucking random strangers in the ass without protection and without having to worry.

Babies who get HIV from breast milk are appalled at you sir, appalled. Infants. Appalled.

US Senator Proposes Bill To Eliminate Overtime For IT Workers

EW87 Re:Why IT workers? (1167 comments)

I feel the same way, it's why I started my own IT consulting company. I can't fire myself for spending time reading CCNA material instead of fielding phone calls :)

Having a professor or tutor beats an encyclopedia any day for me. If I have a question for more granular or comprehensive help for aiding my understanding then a person is more appropriate for my request.

Anonymous Takes Down DOJ, RIAA, and Universal webs

EW87 EW87 writes  |  more than 2 years ago

EW87 writes "Shortly after a federal raid today brought down the file sharing service Megaupload, hackers aligned with the online collective Anonymous have shut down sites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group and the RIAA.
"It was in retaliation for Megaupload, as was the concurrent attack on Justice.org," Anonymous operative Barrett Brown tells RT on Thursday afternoon."

Scientists Create 52 Artificial Rain Storms

EW87 EW87 writes  |  more than 3 years ago

EW87 (951411) writes "CNN and TIME report that Scientists in Abu Dhabi have created artificial rainstorms. "As part of a secret program to control the weather in the Middle East, scientists working for the United Arab Emirates government artificially created rain where rain is generally nowhere to be found. The $11 million project, which began in July, put steel lampshade-looking ionizers in the desert to produce charged particles. The negatively charged ions rose with the hot air, attracting dust. Moisture then condensed around the dust and eventually produced a rain cloud. A bunch of rain clouds."
