Embarrassing Stories Shed Light On US Officials' Technological Ignorance

ElementOfDestruction Re:Can we afford technically incompetent politicia (299 comments)

You know of an IQ Test that can measure corruptibility? I don't think the problem with our elected officials is generally a lack of intelligence; it's a lack of character and responsibility to their actual electorate, rather than the highest bidder.

WhatsApp: 2nd Biggest Tech Acquisition of All Time

ElementOfDestruction Re:CNN argues it's worth the money (257 comments)

I can't figure out how it isn't basically Facebook messaging. They have tried pushing that down users' throats, perhaps if they let users message each service back and forth they can slowly wean any stragglers who use only WhatsApp back onto facebook.

But like you said... those users will likely have jumped ship anyway by the time that happens. What was that one picture site that everybody used before Instagram? Exactly.

WhatsApp: 2nd Biggest Tech Acquisition of All Time

ElementOfDestruction Re:CNN argues it's worth the money (257 comments)

I still don't get it though. I just can't shake the feeling that the sphere of users of WhatsApp probably intersect heavily with the sphere of users of Facebook. I don't know anyone, personally, who uses WhatsApp - but I can't imagine with as pervasive Facebook is, they've already got them as members.

Are Bankers Paid Too Much? Are Technology CEOs?

ElementOfDestruction Re:Of course they are. (712 comments)

Get the fuck out of here with that. $60k for brain surgeon vs. $15k for the most replaceable of employees? The type of stress, the training, the degree of skill that it requires to become those positions? Settle down. I would venture to say that at today's minimum wage, astronauts, brain surgeons, and the President of the United States are all getting paid a reasonable amount. This article is about the uber-elite; not sure why you're trying to make an enemy out of upper-middle-class careers.

White House Responds To Net Neutrality Petition

ElementOfDestruction Re:Whining diatribes by do-nothing people (245 comments)

Wrong. I looked into the problem, saw it was more than unfix-able for the next 10-20 years.

Started a job search for opportunities in the EU. Found one. Moving in 2 months. Helps I'm a dual citizen by birth, but that wasn't necessary in the long run. I'm not betting on this place getting worse before it gets better.

With the way America is educating its youth - lack of reason, dearth of Math skills and farcical mythical conversations taking place in science class - would you wager on it being fixable any time soon?

3-D Printed Pelvis Holding Up After 3 Years

ElementOfDestruction Re:And how much would that cost in America? (82 comments)

I know I'm feeding a troll, but that's a really great argument. Justifying the backbreaking expense of keeping oneself alive against the cost of fuel in two countries. I suppose if you consider the far more efficient vehicles, the vastly reduced amount of driving required, and the great public transport alternatives the argument kind of doesn't seem as brilliant. But I'm just splitting hairs I suppose.

Oh the wolf-PAC. That's so sweet. It's almost like state representatives aren't under the thumb of big business donations.

Your 60-Hour Work Week Is Not a Badge of Honor

ElementOfDestruction Re:GDP (717 comments)

Complete bollocks. Americans get 0 weeks of vacation, French have mandated 6. There's your difference, ignoring the differences in hours per week.

Also take into account the fact that the US Per Capita GDP is extremely bloated; median income is near equal.

Massive Storm Buries US East Coast In Snow and Ice

ElementOfDestruction Re:Global Warming .... Riiiiiight..... (290 comments)

... there has been less snow and snow every year. It's big fucking news that we're getting snow that was considered normal winter activity merely 15-20 years ago. You're cute though.

Ugly Trends Threaten Aviation Industry

To be fair... those figures are mostly over 20 years old. We've had two booms and three busts since then. Care to venture who still largely occupies the top echelon?

Ugly Trends Threaten Aviation Industry

ElementOfDestruction Re:Cost (473 comments)

...source? Because I haven't seen numbers to suggest that's true, the only similar studies I've seen are that the top 1% of the 1% remain pretty much rigidly fixed in their spots.

Sony Selling Off VAIO Computer Business

ElementOfDestruction Re:Fuck Beta (204 comments)

Positive comment? How about this. Who gives a shit. You don't like it, then fucking stop browsing; a handful of upset assholes posting comments on every fucking story isn't going to change the plans of a site with a daily readership likely in the hundreds of thousands. You fucking cocky fuck. Just shut the fuck up.

Something positive would be you whiney cunts leaving. Fuuuuuck you!

Creationism In Texas Public Schools

ElementOfDestruction Re:This is how the media controls you (770 comments)

Oh yea, if they need more money they can either trade a little power or even just take it. "Naive".

You're assuming most of them have any left to sell. They were in their masters' pockets by the time before being nominated for a spot on the ballot.

A lot of the politicians with power aren't elected.

Oh. They must clearly beyond money's sphere of influence!

KickStarter continuing to be abused, despite new TOS?

ElementOfDestruction ElementOfDestruction writes  |  about a year ago

ElementOfDestruction (2024308) writes "Seemingly every week or two, there is a new story about how the once-great KickStarter is being taken further and further down a path — fake projects, continually pushed-back dates, etc. The ACME Corporation Poster has effectively turned KickStarter into a glorified shopping cart. KickStarter makes $1.50 for every poster sold, the Project Founder doesn't have to print a single poster extra. Does KickStarter have enough to lose by allowing projects to do this? At this point, they stand to make $4500 on this project alone."

Conversion of a Climate Change Skeptic

ElementOfDestruction ElementOfDestruction writes  |  more than 2 years ago

ElementOfDestruction writes "The Billionaire Koch brothers have had a large role in funding propaganda designed to increase skepticism in the science behind Climate Change. One method that they have been using is searching for any scientists, especially those who harbor any kinds of doubts on the cause of global warming, to prove Climate Change is either not real or is not because of human activity. Consider this opinion in the NYT by the founder of the recent study; in it, he gathers enough data convince himself that earlier trends gathered from observing data are correct. "it appears likely that essentially all of this increase results from the human emission of greenhouse gases." Sounds like $150k well spent from the Koch Foundation. Full results will be available from Berkeley tomorrow."

Cleveland Clinic adopting iPad 2 for novel usage

ElementOfDestruction ElementOfDestruction writes  |  more than 3 years ago

ElementOfDestruction (2024308) writes "The world-renowned Cleveland Clinic is another organization jumping on the iPad bandwagon. The organization is using iPads to assess recovery from concussions, primarily those obtained in sports activities. This move has to beg many, many questions, including why the organization didn't opt for a cheaper tablet. Would it have been a horrible waste of money to employ a few nerds to develop a belt utilizing materials which would have cost far less than $80 — one that easily could have been sold to many other hospital systems?"

Italy abandons Nuclear Power

ElementOfDestruction ElementOfDestruction writes  |  more than 3 years ago

ElementOfDestruction writes "Italy has joined Germany in halting the production of energy from atomic power generation means. This differs from Germany in that the Italian decision was made by a public vote, rather than the case in Germany where the government mandated the shutdown. 57% of Italian Households voted in this public measure. While democracy should trump all, is it wise to hold majority opinion so high that it slows down progress?"
