Apple 27-inch iMac With Intel's Haswell Inside Tested

Enrique1218 Macs are still pretty... (241 comments)

I have owned Macs since 2000. They are generally well engineer machines from hardware to the software. I have always like the Unix underpinnings (I get nostalgic). However, lately, I can no justify spending much on a Macintosh. I feel that Apple just seems to be laser focused on the casual computing market. The processors haven't really change in the last few years. The systems now skimp on the GPUs meaning gaming is essentially pointless (a console would be a better choice for the money). Right now, I feel that I can only use Macs for word processing and internet. Well, a MacMini can do that. Pretty soon, I will only need an iPAD. Apple should rethink marketing strategy.

Virginia High Court Rejects Case Against Climatologist Michael Mann

Enrique1218 Read Republicans (420 comments)

When was the last time a Rebublican read a science book? First, carbon dioxide is a heat trapping gas. It absorbs infrared and converts to kinetic energy. This is the basis of IR spectroscopy. Alternatively, read about the planet Venus. Then, burning fossil fuels will dump carbon dioxide that has been fixed by living things over the last 500 million years. That is why they are called fossil. Putting that together, things are going to warm up if we keep burning the fuel. I dont need a Phd to figure that out

Congress Dumps James Webb Space Telescope

Enrique1218 There is a free market solution! (409 comments)

For all you that are concern about cutting this program, we are confident that job-creating entrepreneurs will continue to fund this effort. Given that markets have dried here on Earth, venture capitalist will used this telescope to search for new markets in other star systems. We can help this further if we cut taxes to zero on those making $250,000 or more. Don't listen to the other side, the founding fathers never wanted the federal government to fund space programs. They clearly stated that sole purpose of the American government is to defend this nation by perpetual warfare and not promoting scientific development. Also remember, the federal budget is exactly like your home budget. If the federal government does not spend money, then we will never have a deficit and the free market will rain gold in your pockets. Thank you and God bless America.

Military Drone Attacks Are Not 'Hostile'

Enrique1218 Why? (892 comments)

I like Obama and support this effort but I cannot fathom this stance at all. Considering the position of the AG and Legal counsel, I think that president should seek authorization from Congress. I know that Republicans only rubber stamp wars they start and sans any reason or logic, take the opposing position on every thing Obama does. We have to see where Republican really intend to take this country. What is tier vision? Letting tyrants murdering their people, snubbing allies, cutting off grandma while giving wealthy a tax break, and accelerating the government into default. He can point all that out at election time.

OSI Refers Novell Patent Deal To Authorities

Enrique1218 Apple use Open Source (88 comments)

Apple uses and contributes to Open Source software regularly. Many major components of Mac OS x and iOS are derived from open source. I seriously doubt that they are going to attack open source development. But, in this age of patent lawsuit, salvaging proprietary patents from defunct companies is just a part of doing business.

Prepare To Be Watched While You Watch a Movie

Enrique1218 all this to stop "The Hussleman" (433 comments)

You know those post-recorded movies with the camera really suck. It does not replace sitting in a theater or or renting the DVD three months later. I think the cinemas problems is not the Hussleman video taping in the theater but the shitty movies Hollywood gives you to present. They may not want to discourage moviegoers any more than Hollywood has.

Wikileaks To Publish Remaining Afghan Documents

Enrique1218 Re:save lives by exposing military tactics.... (711 comments)

If some chinese person emailed you classified chinese tank plans and you published them on your website for the public to see would that make you a spy? unless you're in china, no, it would not.

I wouldn't exactly want to a trip to see the Great Wall of China after that. Some people call that spying and some people would do everything in their power to punish it.

Wikileaks To Publish Remaining Afghan Documents

Enrique1218 Re:save lives by exposing military tactics.... (711 comments)

Well, I grew up under US occupation. I get to say what I want when I want. I worship what I want when I want. I have enough security that I don't have to worry about being gun down in the street. I can go into a supermarket and buy just about anything I can think. I can make enough money to support my needs and even indulge in some excess material gain. At the end of the day, I even have time for a hobby or extra academic pursuit. Basically, I am free to be the person I want to be and enjoy doing that for a whole lot longer than any Afghani can. I didn't have a choice where I was born. I am sure lucky I was born here.

If I live in a utter shithole and the world's wealthiest and strongest nation decided dump a shitload of cash into my country because religious zealots who rule my life with fear and brutality wrongly figured that they could attack that country with impunity, I would do everything I could to advantage of that situation. I would take their money and build something, I would learn everything I could from them, and I would seriously question how things were done in the past. The way afghanis did it before brought about 30 years of war, poverty, and brutality and turn Afghanistan into an utter shithole. I would hope to make it better.

Verizon Hints At Scrapping Unlimited Data Plans

Enrique1218 The Lowest Common Denominator (319 comments)

The only competition these guys do is seeing who can give their customers less. Forcing data plan, hiking early termination fees above the value of the phone, charging for text messaging, ring tones, and now limiting data plans. There is little difference between any of the wireless service providers in terms of what they provide. The cell phone lock in and multiyear contracts allow this to happen and stifle innovation. By getting a $600 smartphone for $200 with a multiyear contract, we lock ourselves to vendor and can't leave them when they cut service. Instead of developing the technology to meet the customer demand, they would rather trained their customers not to expect too much

Time For Universal Data Plans?

Enrique1218 Forced data plans (245 comments)

The real problem is not that Americans pay twice for internet access. Americans are being forced to pay twice for internet access. Smartphone customers should not have to pay for a data plan just to own the phone. They shouldn't have to do it if their land based internet with wifi is sufficient. I suspect that smartphones will replace simple cell phones soon and more customers will be forced to buy the plans. Now, if people want both unlimited access at home and some access anywhere else, let them pay for it. I suspect that there is a significant market for telcos to provide a service and make a profit. Consumers should be able to choose how much internet they want for their devices. My concern is that this decision is made in a board room.

TSA Worker Jailed In Body Scan Rage Incident

Enrique1218 Am I missing something (352 comments)

Forget about a guy fighting with his co-workers. These damn scanners can allow someone to judge the size of your genitals. That is ridiculous. I don't feel I should have to stand naked in front of someone just to board a plane. I am sorry but I prefer to take my chances with the terrorists.

Apple's Trend Away From Tinkering

Enrique1218 Repeat of 80's (965 comments)

One only has to look at Apples position in particular market to understand the contrasts in their developer policies. Apple's PC market penetration is very low. Apple cannot break 5% market share even after the Vista debacle. As a result, Apple ships the Developers tools free with every Mac, aids Windows installation with Bootcamp, and even takes an open source approach to the core of OS X. In contrast, Apple dominates the iPod market and is a strong contender in the iPhone market. Apples developer policy reflects that position. Apple forces developers through the iTunes and only Cocoa SDK . I also seriously doubt Apple is making any effort to put Android on the phone. This position is less developer friendly than the Mac. The powers that be at Apple must feel thar the developers need Apple more than Apple needs them. I believe this will hurt them in the long run. This policy is extremely short sighted given the rise of Android (think Windows in the 80's). iPhone OS may be better than Android now but Google is very flexible with their developers policy. Google will allow them to take Android devices a lot further than Apple will their developers go. Apple will lose out again just as they did with Windows.

Case in point, I am absolutely in love with the iPhone. I would have one right now and would would pay the full price except for one thing. I have to purchase AT&T data plan for $30/month for as long as I have the phone. I have no need for a data plan. I am around wifi most of the time and I would rarely need to use AT&T 3G. If I were so incline to use 3g, I would probably download a tv show off of hulu with Flash. AT&T network can't handle that and Apple won't let me have flash. Moreover, even if they did, it would run very slowly because Apple is not friendly with it developers. I believe Apple is pushing me to buy content from them and pay for a service I will never use. The forced data plan is the same with Android but at least Flash for Android is around the corner. In the race to my pocket, Google may edge out Apple. That is a shame, I do love my Macintosh and would have loved the iPhone. This is bigger than tinkering and I hope Steve Jobs wakes up.

The Apple Paradox, Closed Culture & Free-Thinking Fans

Enrique1218 Re:Free-thinking? (945 comments)

Maybe free thinking is not uniform across the many aspects of life. For instance, I am a scientist. I am the most creative in my chosen field which is applied physics. I used Macintosh for 10 years and will not seriously consider anything else. I believe Linux to be unpolished and Windows to be buggy and bloated. That may or may not be true now but it was true when I used them last. I am not free thinking when it comes to my computers. Apples always work and require the least amount of maintenance over their life. From purchase to disposal, I spend little time worrying about my computer and more time being creative in my field. I personally like it that way.

I have tackled physics, biology, philosophy, literature, and computers. All very complex, yet not nearly as perplexing as the opposite sex. I freely admit in the anominity of this forum that I have at this time never had a romantic relationship with a woman and all the conclusions that it implies (except I am not gay). I found the courtship process intimidating at times, impossible, improbable, and downright confusing. I could never figure out what women want. Therefore, I don't know even to this day what I can offer or what I should develop in myself. I exercise, swim, cook, and read. I am good with kids. I am getting a Masters degree and may persue a medical degree. I will learn to ride a motorcylce, to dance salsa, and to speak spanish. I have earning potential, am in good physical shape, and I am not lazy. Yet, despite these qualities, I can't seem to generate any interest from women. A friend of mine said that I have simply do not have "game". Ok, but what is this "game" and how may I get it?

I shall cite some expamples to further illustrate my dilema. My brother is a bartender at low-class yet popular bar. My brother does not share my problem in any respect. There are these pretty girls that come in regularly simply because my brother is there. My brother introduce me to them and I had did my best to joke, to socialize, to have fun, and in general, to flirt my ass off. Yet, though they have treated me kindly, I could sense that my brother and his fellow bartenders had their interests. My brother already has 2 kids (with two different women), no college education, and is in slightly worse shape than I. He is the better man? Another example happen yesterday, I was on the ski machine busting out another 50 minutes of cardio. I had my copy of "Hitchiker's Guide..." reading it trying to focus on it and my routine. A pretty women got on the machine next to me. I had notice her checking me ( or so I thought) out as I was lifting weights earlier. Considering that there were other open machines far from me, I figure this was one of those little "signs" women give. I casually turn off my iPod and close the book while appearing to take interest in the TV. I did these things with time in between so that when I talk to her it would seem natural and not like a come on. I struck up a casual conversation with no sexual overtones or anything offensive. I even manage to complement her that seem to go over well. Yet, in the middle of the conversation, I realize that I was the only one keeping the conversation going. I don't believe she was really interested in the first place. As you see, I can't seem to be what women want. I have have even far greater stories of failure that I won't go into. I will not give up but this the gretest physical and mental challenge I have ever undertook. I know many slashdotter has had similar problems. What have you done to get women interested?

Enrique1218 Enrique1218 writes  |  more than 8 years ago Hello, I am on a quest for growth. I have embarked on this quest not too long ago. The reason I desire growth is stress. Yes, STRESS, the beneficial bane of our existence. Stress of not having many friends, stress of not having a girlfriend, and the stress of earning a living. In the past, I resigned myself to let the universe decide my destiny without much resistance on my part. But that didn't work out too well, the universe is not very fond of me or is just indifferent to the issue. I was probably naively following the words of fool who just had better luck than I. In any rate, I need to grow. How am I going to grow? First and foremost is I am going to turn off the TV. There is little point in comparing myself to the fictious characters dreamt by someone who has never walked a day in my shoes. Moreover, I don't think "natural male enhancement" is not going to help. Second, I going to do things I always thought would impossible for me to do. I am going to learn to ride a motorcycle, learn spanish, learn to dance, and maybe-just maybe- I will approach a girl. The worst that can happen to me is failure, but in the end I might see how worthwhile I really am and also how life is. What are your thoughts on growth and what will you try?
