Thor: The Dark World — What Did You Think?

EricWright Re:This is what I think. (233 comments)

I thought they should rastify Thor by 10% or so.

Props for the Itchy & Scratchy & Poochy reference!

Snowden Is Lying, Say House Intelligence Committee Leaders

EricWright Which one is it? (749 comments)

He's lying, or he's the worst traitor in the history of the United States. It can't be both. If he's lying, then he didn't reveal any highly classified state secrets.

Typical gub'mint response. Talking out of both sides of their asses at the same time.

Ask Slashdot: How Do You Stay Fit At Work?

EricWright Martial Arts (635 comments)

I joined three gyms in 5-6 years and never stuck with it for more than 3 months, wasting the rest of the year's membership. Then, I decided to get into martial arts (partly as a family activity). A decent school with good master instructors will keep you motivated. There's always a new goal ahead of you: your next belt promotion, that new technique you saw the senior students practicing, new opportunities, etc. I've stuck with it for 6.5 years now, earning a 2nd dan in taekwondo and have been training in various Korean sword techniques for the past 3 years. When I started, I was around 215#, now I hover around 185-190# which is appropriate for my height and body type.

You just have to carve time out of your schedule. I drop my older son off at school around 7:15, work from 8-5, train immediately after work 2-3 days a week and still have time to cook dinner, attend soccer practices, help with homework and so on. The big difference is that I watch little TV any more ... and don't really miss it.

Degree Hack: Cobbling Together Credit Hours For Cheap

EricWright Re:Bullshit (368 comments)

A friend of mine is having his PhD entirely footed by the university he's performing research work at. How sweet it can be!

That's how I did mine ... combination of TA and RA = no grad school debt plus ~$1500-1800/mo income (back in the mid-late 90s) to scrape by on.

Silicon Valley's Dirty Little Secret: Age Bias

EricWright Re:Congratulating yourself? You should be sorry! (375 comments)

Oh, many of us do, but the laws have been written that keep the working class down. We take what we can get and be glad for it. It's the American Way!

U.S. Election Day In Progress: What's Been Your Experience?

EricWright Re:MN-Presidential wasn't why I voted (821 comments)

Good luck. Our Republican state legislature figured out a way to get our anti-gay-rights amendment on the ballot during the primaries which a) have notoriously low voter turnout and b) didn't have a Democratic race for president, further limiting the liberal vote. It probably didn't make a huge difference in the end, but it shows the lengths conservatives will go to in order to shove their morals down everyone else's throats.

U.S. Election Day In Progress: What's Been Your Experience?

EricWright Re:Funny business across the country (821 comments)

If you can find some links that show Republicans up to shenanigans by all means post them.

I'm too bored to do much digging, but I read this one about an hour ago. That said, maybe it isn't being perpetrated by R ... maybe a D is behind it in an effort to make it look like an R.

In either case, there's lots of shenanigans going on by both major parties. Don't act so surprised.

The winters are...more interesting. Not horrible, but lots of snow and cold.

Does not compute. Lots of snow and cold is my exact definition of a horrible winter.

15 Years of Stuff That Matters

EricWright Re:CmdrTaco's Blog Post (145 comments)

Fortunately, as Slashdot approaches its 2^17th story, we've managed to keep track of almost all our old postings — all but the first 2^10, or so.

Right there in paragraph 1.

Beer Is Cheaper In the US Than Anywhere Else In the World

EricWright Re:How do you make it cheaper? Home brew (633 comments)

Go for a malt-forward brew and you can get by on about $23-25 for a 5 gallon batch, which will yield north of 50 12 oz bottles. Under $0.50 for a good beer is a nice price point, but as you say, there are some up-front equipment costs, ignored labor costs and TIME!

Ask Slashdot: What To Do Before College?

EricWright Re:Take advice from those before you.... (335 comments)

If ever a post should be modded above a 5, it's this. I stuck around town, worked (mostly) day shift in the kitchen of a pizza joint and hung out at the beach with the rest of the kids at night. Best. Summer. Ever.

IT Positions Some of the Toughest Jobs To Fill In US

EricWright Re:I think we all know how to solve this problem.. (886 comments)

Now TELL me why I want to leave for your pathetic 2 year contract?

I do ERP architecture and development work ... Most of the recruiters that contact me are looking for 6 months or less. One even sent me a position that was LISTED as a 20 day contract 1500 miles from my home. I don't even respond to those.

Landmark Calculation Clears the Way To Answering How Matter Is Formed

EricWright Re:That is because of the subject matter of debate (205 comments)

The fact that you WANT to run vi inside emacs automatically makes vi better! I just wonder why you want the stovetop, oven and kitchen sink included when all you really NEED is a blender.

Facebook Shares Retreat Below IPO Price

EricWright Re:Troubling signal, why? (471 comments)

If they were EMPLOYEE shares, then they weren't part of the IPO. FB can only sell shares still held by the company. Any shares granted to employees are theirs to do with as they please (as long as it doesn't violate any contractual agreements).
