Is It Time To End Our Love Affair With the QWERTY Keyboard?

ErichTheWebGuy Read the EULA (557 comments)

Section (3) (a) reads in part: "Users acknowledge that certain details may be provided to third parties ... provision of such information is necessary for IP owner to operate its business" and (3) (b) reads in part: " Users acknowledge that information about them may be transmitted between countries to other entities that IP owner has commercial contracts with" Sounds legit - what could possibly go wrong?

LibreOffice 3.3 Released Today

ErichTheWebGuy Actually (470 comments)

I think it makes a prefect case for open source ideals. The fork from the original OOo demonstrates a commitment to the values that open source encompasses. If a company scoops up a project and will likely destroy it, just fork it and make it better. You can also look to Mambo (and countless others) for a similar story.

ErichTheWebGuy Re:Right. (218 comments)

Of course. My apologies. Why would I want to RTFM? That would break the long standing tradition here. :)

LHC physicist arrested on terrorism charges

ErichTheWebGuy ErichTheWebGuy writes  |  more than 4 years ago

ErichTheWebGuy (745925) writes "A nuclear physicist working on the "large collider" experiment to simulate the Big Bang has been arrested in France on suspicion of advising al-Qa'ida on possible terrorist targets.

The 32-year-old French scientist, of Algerian origin, is being held with his younger brother after being trailed, and bugged, by French anti-terrorist police for more than a year.

A judicial source told the newspaper Le Figaro: "This is very high level." The French Interior Minister, Brice Hortefeux, said that the investigation "may perhaps show that we have prevented the worst".

The scientist, who was not immediately named, was arrested alongside his brother near Lyons on Thursday on suspicion of having contacts with al-Qa'ida in the Islamic Maghreb, or Aqim. He was said to have been suspected of giving advice on possible nuclear targets within France."

Kids Using $100 Laptops to Browse Porn

ErichTheWebGuy ErichTheWebGuy writes  |  more than 7 years ago

ErichTheWebGuy (745925) writes "Everyone remembers those $100 laptops that were supposed to be helping kids in third-world countries with education. The inevitable side-effect is occurring: the kids are using them to browse porn sites. The Nigerian News Agency says, "Efforts to promote learning with laptops in a primary school in Abuja have gone awry as the pupils freely browse adult sites with explicit sexual materials." A representative of the One Laptop Per Child aid group was quoted as saying that the computers, part of a pilot scheme, would now be fitted with filters."
