Ask Slashdot: Best Cell Phone Carrier In the US?

FFOMelchior Ting for low end w/ data usage (375 comments)

Can't vouch for quality since I haven't tried many providers... but it is super affordable. Their usage is tiered, but they'll automatically move you without any penalty to whatever tier you use for that month, even if you use a lower tier. Yes, that means if you're on a 500 MB plan and you use less than than 100 MB, they'll charge you for the 100 MB for that month. How crazy is that?

My cell phone bill went down $15 switching from a voice + text w/ AT&T to voice + text + data with Ting. Only downside is that the phones aren't subsided, so I paid $200 for mine. But obviously the prices are still going to work in my favor in the long run, especially since I'm not a phone hopper and can easily see myself keeping this one for 3-4 years.

With 'Access Codes,' Textbook Pricing More Complicated Than Ever

FFOMelchior Re:Never buy from the student bookstore (400 comments)

Wish every prof was like you. My gf is now taking a class where the professor requires them to take notes in the book. And the kicker? He also checks beforehand to make sure there aren't any notes written already. Which means she has to spend $120 to buy a new one at the book store, instead of the .50c (+ $5 shipping) to get the same textbook, same edition from Amazon. Complete bullshit.

Followup: Ultraviolet Vision After Cataract Surgery

FFOMelchior I don't know if I can "see" UV... (311 comments)

I've also had cataracts surgery, when I was a toddler. And I've always noticed that UV has bothered me and not other people, but I've never thought about if I "see" UV, or at least see it in a way that others can't. Sometimes it's enough to cause my eyes to spasm. (In fact, my aversion is so strong, while reading this summary my mind _imagined_ seeing UV light, and my eyes spasmed for a few seconds in reaction.) Anyway, now I'm wondering if anyone else has this sort of reaction.

Mozart and Bach Handel Subway Station Crime

FFOMelchior Just to start with... (353 comments)

Intentionally leaving out 3/4 and 6/8, because those are too common. Oh, and also leaving out the more "proggy" bands like Tool and Dream Theater, because then this would be too easy.

Money by Pink Floyd (7/4)
Four Sticks by Led Zeppelin (5/4)
Spoonman by Soundgarden (7/4)
Silhouette by Thrice (4/4 and 7/4)
Words in the Water and Hold Fast Hope bu Thrice (5/4)
Before the Lobotomy (middle section in 7/8)
March of the Pigs by Nine Inch Nails (29/8)
Time Like These by Foo Fighters (main riff in 7/8)
Paranoid Android by Radiohead (sections in 7/4)
Pyramid Song by Radiohead (16/8, piano plays in groups in 3-3-4-3-3)
Idiotique by Radiohead (6/4 drums, 4/4 vocals)
Everything In It's Right Place by Radiohead (10/4)
15 Step by Radiohead (5/4)
2+2=5 by Radiohead (7/8)

Are there a ton? No. But are there really THAT many songs in the classical realm that aren't 4/4, 3/4, 6/8 either?

Viruses Stole City College of S.F. Data For Years

FFOMelchior Re:Not surprising (93 comments)

From what I've seen community college IT Tends to be pretty horrible. One of them out here had a server password of "password" and remoting on. Others tend to use a generic password on everything such as Mascot1 or gomascot1

IT Dunce A: Crap! Someone out there knows our password "gomascot1"!
IT Dunce B: No worries, I'll go ahead and change it to "gotigers1".
IT Dunce A: Phew!

PlayStation Network Hack Will Cost Sony $170M

FFOMelchior Re:Compensation is Peanuts (189 comments)

Let's not forget that these games are pretty old, and a few of them have sequels out. That sweetens the deal for developers... maybe there are people that haven't tried LittleBigPlanet, but through this, will try it, like it, and buy LittleBigPlanet 2. Personally, I never thought Infamous looked interesting, but now that it's free, my interest is piqued to at least try it. And if I like it, well, the developers could end up scoring a sale of Infamous 2 that they wouldn't have gotten otherwise.

Leaked Activision Memos Compare CoD, Guitar Hero

FFOMelchior Wow... (101 comments)

"Activision doesn’t always seem to get the credit it deserves in terms of innovation in my opinion"

We're talking about the same Activision that bought the Guitar Hero franchise, released an exceptionally crappy Guitar Hero 3, then added the full band concept into part 4 after Harmonix (the original creators of Guitar Hero) released Rock Band and made it popular? Oh, and then Band Hero, lol.
