Fark Creator Slams 'the Wisdom of Crowds'

FearForWings Obligitory Heinlein Quote (507 comments)

Democracy can't work. Mathematicians, peasants, and animals, that's all there is — so democracy, a theory based on the assumption that mathematicians and peasants are equal, can never work. Wisdom is not additive; its maximum is that of the wisest man in a given group.

Mobile Game Trojan Calls the South Pole

FearForWings Re:LOL (195 comments)

The simple answer is that the phone companies hope you'll be to embarrass to contest the charges.

Simmilar examples can be found in:

1.) Back in the good old days of dial-up, there were adult sites that would give "free" access assuming you (stupidly/unknowingly) dialed into a south-pacific island nation number that had a north American prefix, with your unlimited long distance account.*
2.) All the cell joke and ring tone numbers you can "get for free" that are/were advertised on TV.

New Call of Duty Titles Announced, Fired Devs Sue For Name

FearForWings Re:WTF? (134 comments)

I think you have misinterpreted this quote. What they want to do is turn CoD into a pay to play game, where they get monthly fees for multilayer game play like WoW. While I can't find the links now, there was a secretive poll by Activision to judge this possibility and other innuendos like your quote to suggest that this is where they are trying to go.

Emmerich Plans Foundation As a 3D Epic

FearForWings Re:Oh My God, THE Roland Emmerich?! (283 comments)

Who gives a fuck about my post? Either it's a good comment, or it's not. Most Slashdot posts are made to incite flamewars, just a big pile of special effects with a moronic plot, and idiotic dialog (nothing to fix). So, with that in mind, my post was above average.

There fixed that for you

Saboteur Launch Plagued By Problems With ATI Cards

Consoles could be fine for all types of gaming if the manufactures allowed for full keyboard and mouse support on their systems.

Murderer With "Aggression Genes" Gets Reduced Sentence

FearForWings Re:Where's the... (507 comments)

Political tags — such as royalist, communist, democrat, populist, fascist, liberal, conservative, and so forth — are never basic criteria. The human race divides politically into those who want people to be controlled and those who have no such desire. The former are idealists acting from highest motives for the greatest good of the greatest number. The latter are surly curmudgeons, suspicious and lacking in altruism. But they are more comfortable neighbors than the other sort.

The Most Useless Key On My Keyboard Is...

FearForWings Re:Scroll lock! (939 comments)

You know you could have remapped the windows key (left and right separately) to any other key with a registry hack or a program like SharpKeys. Then you would have had one more key you could bind that is easily accessible using a WASD style hand position.

"Right To Repair" Bill Advances In Massachusetts

FearForWings Re:Yes! (478 comments)

Except that in many larger counties for 1996 and newer cars to pass emission tests or vehicle inspection the engine computer must be fully OBD-II compliant. AFIK, no after market engine computer does this directly. The system must either be used in conjunction with the stock computer which limits tuning, or the stock system must be swapped back in each inspection time.

Code-Breaking Quantum Algorithm On a Silicon Chip

FearForWings Re:Is this really a big deal? (133 comments)

US naval based air-power would have been setback a few years*. Instead of relativity quickly recapturing the outer south pacific islands, we may have moved to further support Australia from threat of invasion, and in their fight in the Pacific. It should be remembered that Japan had been at war for five year prior to the Battle of Midway, and was experiencing shortages of resources and personnel. If Japan hadn't surrendered to the US (in this hypothetical case due a US loss at Midway) it may have faced invasion from the Soviet army, after the fall of Berlin.

*As Adm. Nimitz strongly believed in a carrier based battle group it would seem unlikely that he, or the Admirals in charge of the carriers, would (engage in)/(not disengage from) the battle if the entire carrier fleet was in imminent danger of being sunk; even if this meant sacrificing ships.

The Story of a Simple and Dangerous OS X Kernel Bug

FearForWings Re:summary (230 comments)

A good summary of the exploit.

Admittedly I don't have experience with either function but..
What I don't understand is why TIOCGWINSZ, or almost any TTY call, can be used from fcntl(2)?
Also, why didn't OS X throw an exception when fcntl(2) tired write outside the program's memory?

Cruising Fisherman's Wharf For New Passports' Serial Numbers

FearForWings Re:Security (276 comments)

To be fair there is a passport office, and several consulates that issue visas in SF. It's possible the passports didn't even belong to the people carrying them, as it is common to use a third party to get foreign visas.

New Elliptic Curve Cryptography Record

FearForWings Re:56 bit DES? (43 comments)

I don't know what keying option ATMs generally use with 3DES, but assuming they aren't using the weakest (only equivalent to DES), then "14 full 56-bit' searches in 26 days (13 June - 8 Jul) doesn't pose a significant threat. Being generous, their search is about equivalent to a single complete 60-bit (log(14*2^56)/log(2)=59.8) search over the same time, and according to the Wiki article keying option 2 of 3DES provides "80 bits of security". So their setup would take about 27 million days (26 days * 2^80/2^60) to do a single complete 80-bit search.

Man Arrested For Taking Photo of Open ATM

FearForWings Re:Not Exactly for Taking a Photo (1232 comments)

The problem with giving them something other than your real name, is that they'll run the name you give them through their computer system. When it turns up without a match or not matching you, then they will probably arrest you for something like 'lying to an officer', or 'impeding an investigation'. Finally, they'll throw in a resisting arrest charge to top it off.

Man Arrested For Taking Photo of Open ATM

FearForWings Re:Not Exactly for Taking a Photo (1232 comments)

Also from the article, emphasis added:

The Nevada Supreme Court had held that the Nevada statute required only that the suspect divulge his name; presumably, he could do so without handing over any documents whatsoever. As long as the suspect tells the officer his name, he has satisfied the dictates of the Nevada stop-and-identify law.

In Nevada you are not required to produce an ID, of course this doesn't mean you wont get hassled for not doing so (in NV or any state).

AMD Overclocks New Phenom II X4 To 7 GHz

FearForWings Re:If you're going to use liquid nitrogen... (288 comments)

Passing out due to oxygen deprivation generally isn't instant, but assuming you'll act in a rational manner to save yourself as you black out will probably be fatal.

It's CO2 that causes the discomfort you feel from holding your breath for a long time. All you'd feel from nitrogen displacing all the oxygen in the air would be lethargy. So I guess your survival may depend if you have coffee in the room with you.
