Hackers Reveal Nasty New Car Attacks

Flea of Pain Re:Meh... Give me access, I own your computer (390 comments)

Couldn't they just attach some kind of reciever to the port and send it remote instructions...like once car hits 100 km/h (60 mph) disable brakes? That being said, they could always just cut a brake line as mentioned above.

Boeing Touts Fighter Jet To Rival F-35 — At Half the Price

Flea of Pain Re:ROI (497 comments)

What exactly do pilots use their peripheral vision for? Last time I heard a pilot talking, if you could see the other plane you were waaaaaay to close. That is what long range radar is for, you can blow them up before you can even see them. Especially at the speeds places are currently flying, vision isn't really all that useful.

Unless you mean using peripheral vision to watch your radar while playing angry birds on your phone. Then yes, pilots depend on that.

Study Compares IQ With Browser Choice

Flea of Pain Re:All of those studies are the same (380 comments)

I have to disagree with some of your statement...I hate doctors not because they often don't know what is wrong and hand wave to distract you from the fact that they are taking a guess...even when you are fully aware of what is wrong with you from past experience.

Computer people generally do know what is wrong, and can fix it. So they explain happily while they work. Some doctors may, but a good number do not, so they hand wave. I will give them the fact that a human body can fail in many more ways than a computer, but it is still a frustrating exercise to find a good physician.

Netflix Killing DVDs Like Apple Killed Floppies?

Flea of Pain Re:ha (345 comments)

Wait! Floppies are dead? But...but...that means I am working in a graveyard! I am pretty sure that should be illegal.

Seriously though, floppies still have their use. A quick reliable way to boot an old machine up and run small utilities? Pass the 'dead' disk please!

Ask Slashdot: Mobile Data In Canada For a US Citizen?

Flea of Pain Re:We don't have the "Internet" in Canada (270 comments)

Well I just had a chance to check out the rocket sticks...not worth it. They are over 200 dollars without contract, and as mention around here somewhere the connection is subpar. Sorry for the crappy advice above, I just knew it was a possibility.

Ask Slashdot: Mobile Data In Canada For a US Citizen?

Flea of Pain Re:We don't have the "Internet" in Canada (270 comments)

Join the club...although it is almost mosquito season now! Back on topic...what about the "Rocket Stick" that Rogers offers. It is basically a USB stick that connects to the cellular network to offer internet to tablets, laptops etc. If your iPad has a USB port (too lazy to look up specs, but with Apple who knows what the latest thing you don't need is) you can just plug in the Rocket Stick and get internet. The data plans are not too terrible, but the speeds aren't great. Honestly would not be my first option, and I would avoid it if at all possible, but it could be worth looking into.

Oh, I am not sure what the cost for the stick is if you don't do a contract data plan though...

Wikileaks Says Public Forced Canadian DMCA Delay

Flea of Pain Re:Vote NDP! (177 comments)

Sadly I have to agree. The idea of pure democracy is intriguing...until you look at the guy in the next car over picking his nose while eating a cheeseburger, smoking, and driving. I find myself leaning more and more towards the meritocracy form of government. But again, who decides who has the merit to rule?

*sigh, it seems there is no winning. Time to go colonize mars and rule my own little crater with an iron fist!

Wikileaks Says Public Forced Canadian DMCA Delay

Flea of Pain Re:Vote NDP! (177 comments)

Ok, I know I may be missing something bigger picture here, and I certainly don't have a political science degree, but with today's levels of technology how is it not feasible to simply poll all of Canada electronically in a secure way?

If you set a system like that up (I am sure the costs would be fairly substantial for security, ensuring one vote each only, etc.) could you not then have a true democracy? You could just have billboards up across each city showing what issues were being voted on that day, and if it was something you cared one way or the other you just logged in and cast your vote. Leave the voting open for a few days on each issue, and get a real consensus about people who care about the issue.

I do realize the one draw back of this is that the general public is making decisions about their own futures... :D

Real-Life Frogger Ends In Hospital Visit

Flea of Pain Re:Stupid is as stupid does. (314 comments)

You do realize that if someone jumps right in front of your vehicle while attempting to play "frogger", you have no time to hit the breaks (after reaction time) regardless of your speed. That rule is reserved for things like an Elk which you can see ahead of time and which can reasonably be thought of as crossing the road at a bad time. People generally have better judgement, and as such you don't slow down to a crawl every time you pass one on the sidewalk.

Apple Chief Patent Lawyer to Leave

Flea of Pain Flea of Pain writes  |  more than 3 years ago

Flea of Pain (1577213) writes "Apple Inc's chief patent counsel will soon leave the company, at a time when the iPhone maker is fighting numerous legal battles around the world, according to a source familiar with the situation.
It was unclear why Richard "Chip" Lutton Junior, who manages the iPhone maker's patent portfolio, is leaving the company.

However, BJ Watrous, a former deputy general counsel with Hewlett Packard, is now listed as Apple's chief IP counsel on Watrous's LinkedIn web page."

Assange Denied Residency in Sweden

Flea of Pain Flea of Pain writes  |  more than 3 years ago

Flea of Pain (1577213) writes "Sweden denied a work and residency permit Monday for Julian Assange, founder of the WikiLeaks website that angered the United States by releasing classified U.S. military documents about the Afghan war.Assange has been establishing a base in Sweden in order to benefit from the Nordic country's strict journalist protection laws. He is also being investigated over rape allegations in Sweden, which he has denied, calling them baseless.

"The board today rejected Assange's application for a work and residency permit," said Hakan Gestrin, a spokesman at the Swedish Migration Board. He gave no reason for the rejection of the permit, citing confidentiality rules.

Assange, an Australian citizen, can appeal the decision within three weeks.

The Pentagon said Sunday it had a 120-member team ready to review an expected leak this month by the whistle-blowing Wikileaks of as many as 500,000 Iraq war documents. Wikileaks released some 70,000 U.S. military files on Afghanistan in July."

iPhone users have more sex

Flea of Pain Flea of Pain writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Flea of Pain (1577213) writes "Yes, in a deep and sonorous study by the dating site OkCupid, there seems to be no doubt: iPhone owners have more sex than BlackBerry owners and a lot more sex than the worthy, solemn, dedicated purchasers of Android phones.

The numbers for women might leave some readers breathless--as they rush to their local Apple store to buy an iPhone.

For this analysis of 30-year-olds with smartphones suggested that women with iPhones had an average of 12.3 sexual partners (I am sure the 0.3 knows exactly who he is), while their age-equivalents who had opted to put an Android into their purse scored a mere 6.1."

Hobbit on Hold

Flea of Pain Flea of Pain writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Flea of Pain (1577213) writes "Director Guillermo Del Toro has confirmed upcoming Lord of the Rings prequel The Hobbit has been put on hold indefinitely because the movie has been caught in a "tangled negotiation" over the future of the MGM movie studio.

The film, based on J.R.R. Tolkien's first book in the fantasy series, was reportedly due to begin shooting this summer, but has been mired in delays.

Lord Of The Rings director Peter Jackson, who will act as producer on the new film, recently dismissed rumours of trouble with the picture, insisting: "It's not really been delayed, because we've never announced the date"."

Fable III Announced for 2010

Flea of Pain Flea of Pain writes  |  about 5 years ago

Flea of Pain (1577213) writes "So Fable III is finally in the works! Peter Molyneux revealed that his team was working on Fable III, which would arrive in late 2010, two years after the release of Fable II. The game will give you the primary task of becoming Albion's king and leading the people to happiness and the kingdom to glory. Fable III will be something bold and different, Molyneux promises, stating that story and drama will play a major part in it. New things will be done with the dog and the bread crumb trails mechanics, which were present in the second game, and you will be offered complete control of your actions and your people's actions, as you will be the king of Albion. Molyneux also says that your family in the game will play a major role but more details in this regard are not available at this time. Also, you will need to balance many things, including poverty and greed, tyranny and compassion or progress and tradition, all in order to keep your subjects happy. Furthermore, you will be able to set taxes and decide how you will rule your subjects. Your spouse, be it a king or a queen, will also point you into various directions over the course of the game. It seems that you will start as a son or daughter of the hero from Fable II and then progress until the halfway point of the game when you will be named king or queen of Albion. This means that you need to keep your save data from Fable II in order for a higher degree of customization."
