Rooftop Solar Could Reach Price Parity In the US By 2016

Forty Two Tenfold Re:They WILL FIght Back (516 comments)

Land use is only one aspect of environmental impact.

A good example: the Dutch claiming new land after removing water from it with... WIND POWER.

I'll repeat: Wind power is a joke.

OK, be a five year old and go on repeating it. You may especially want to repeat it to the XV century Dutch people!

Orbiters Study Effect of Giant Comet-Caused Meteor Shower On Mars

Forty Two Tenfold Re:Effects on Martian atmosphere (48 comments)

If you start manipulating the comet's orbit early enough (say around the orbit of Saturn), it's more cost-effective. You can add some slingshot (braking) maneouvers far enough from Earth and with an Olympus Mons of luck you could land an ocean on Mars.

The Great IT Hiring He-Said / She-Said

Forty Two Tenfold Re:There's a clue shortage (574 comments)

But companies hiring based on this metric want to hear that you were administering 200+, 500+, whatever number of servers on a daily basis.

Is having an eye on 13.5 thousand machines OK? I manage that many*, but I made some tools for that.

* Several bitcoin mints.

France Investigating Mysterious Drone Activity Over 7 Nuclear Power Plant Sites

Forty Two Tenfold Re:Unless the plant is surrounded in a glass dome. (128 comments)

There are norms that dictate required redundancy for a given purpose. Where I live, the norms require 6-fold redundancy where human health or life is at stake (e.g. lifts). I'm convinced there is no "just long|strong enough" anywhere in construction.

The Problem With Positive Thinking

In reality no one can be said to be absolutely pessimistic nor absolutely optimistic

The successful compromise has been reached though: both sides are equally dissatisfied.

Wind Power Is Cheaper Than Coal, Leaked Report Shows

Forty Two Tenfold Re:Too bad... (610 comments)

Nuclear facilities carry this disadvantage among others (in case of malicious intent): single point of failure. You cannot disable the whole network of wind and solar generators at once without crippling the surrounding infrastructure (or releasing Stuxnet 2.0).

Independent Researchers Test Rossi's Alleged Cold Fusion Device For 32 Days

Forty Two Tenfold Re:Hoax (986 comments)

Rossi claims he has constructed 1 MW reactors. Assuming this was true, and assuming Rossi could sell that power for just $0.10 USD per kW-hr, then he has a machine that effectively generates income at the rate of $100 / hour.

Meh.

No radiation was observed.

THey were imprecise, yes. They observed IR, of course but, to the point, what kind and how much of hard radiation would you expect from a device with supposed output of ~ 2kW (if I didn't bungle the zeroes)?

Record wind power levels trigger energy price fall across Europe

Forty Two Tenfold Forty Two Tenfold writes  |  about a year ago

Forty Two Tenfold (1134125) writes "Electricity prices across Europe dropped last month as mild temperatures, strong winds and stormy weather produced wind power records in Germany, France and the UK, according to data released by Platts.

The price decline was more marked in Germany, where the average day-ahead baseload price in December fell 10% month over month to €35.71/MWh. On a daily basis, December was a month of extremes for Germany, with day-ahead base prices closing on December 10 and 11 at less than €60/MWh – the highest over-the-counter levels seen all year – only to fall to its lowest level December 24 to €0.50/MWh.

Let's talk about climate change weather and how it makes renewables more and more viable."

Obama Accuses Iran of Nuclear Ambitions Despite Testimony by Top Intel Official

Forty Two Tenfold Forty Two Tenfold writes  |  about 2 years ago

Forty Two Tenfold (1134125) writes "U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper confirmed this week Iran has not decided to develop a nuclear weapon and that it would be unable to do so secretly. Testifying before the Senate, Clapper said Iran could not divert safeguarded material to produce weapons-grade uranium without it being discovered. Despite Clapper’s statements, President Obama raised the prospect of Iran developing a nuclear weapon during an interview Thursday with an Israeli television station ahead of his visit to Israel next week."

Polish computer genius, Jacek Karpiski dies at 82

Forty Two Tenfold Forty Two Tenfold writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Forty Two Tenfold (1134125) writes "

One of the greatest achievements of Polish science was the K-202 minicomputer. The device was designed by Karpinski in the years 1970-73. K-202 surpassed nearly 100-fold contemporary computers, worked at a rate of 1 million operations per second, or faster than personal computers marketed a decade later. Minicomputer was equipped with a permanent memory, as well as operational, which could be extended. K-202 was the most advanced equipment in those days, his only match the American and New Super Modular One from England. Unfortunately, despite the formation of the Anglo-Polish company which deal with production equipment, was founded only 30 copies of K-202.

Original in Polish."
