Why Don't We Finish More Games?

Fumus Re:nethack (341 comments)

I also did play it on-and-off and not non-stop, but it's not only about the difficulty.
A difficult, but repetitive game (Demons' Souls, Prince of Persia trilogy) will make you angry and quit the game. In SAngband (NetHack is more random in this aspect) almost every death makes you angry, but at the same time you know exactly what happened wrong and you learn not to do it again. However, instead of backtracking a few steps and trying again, you start over again from zero, in another completely randomly generated world.

Why Don't We Finish More Games?

Fumus Re:Isn't it... (341 comments)

I started playing Sangband when I was 15. 7 years later I still did not finish the bloody game :P

$2,000 Bounty For Open Source Xbox Kinect Drivers

Fumus Re:Ah the good old days (274 comments)

Whatever happened to people selling devices to other people, so they could use them as they see fit?

It stopped being valid when manufacturers discovered they could sell one thing at a loss, but it needs another part to use it, thus generating profit. (Consoles and games, razors and blades)

8pen Reinvents the Keyboard For Mobile Devices

Fumus Re:Not a great implementation (214 comments)

It's probably easier for us to all learn Morse, and just have a deet da dee deet festival.

While quickly tapping with your thumb could lead to strained muscles, I think it would be the perfect solution for voice input!

No more complex voice recognition algorithms. Just ask the user to say "dee" and "daa" so that the phone knows what's a dot and what's a line and off you go. You'd sound like a total nerd, but I'm sure it would have better accuracy than current voice recognition :P

Okay, I thought "meh, sandbox the system and disable autorun. Nothing can break then." This certainly made me afraid of random USB connectors sticking out of walls :o

Cheap Software Tools Give New Life To Stop-Motion Animation

Fumus Re:English homework (111 comments)

Meh. Seems like google does not index anonymous coward entries anyway. It's not a ploy, I'm just a random dude who did his homework (10 minutes effort for me) in order to get some + karma on DarkWarez, but he did not + me, so I sure as hell am not going to let him cheat for free.

Australian Visitors Must Declare Illegal Porn To Customs Officers

Fumus Re:Yes office, (361 comments)

We don't let adults have sex with minors.
All the same reasons apply to sex with animals.

It's not so much about harm as it is about consent.

It is never about consent. Why?

Animal breeding footage is legal. You can even see it on youtube and it has millions of views. What does that have to do with anything? Most of the footage shows (let's use horse sex in this case) a restrained female (for her own good, yeah!) being bred by a stallion. You cannot be sure she consents. She has her hind legs tied, her tail moved to the side, she can't protest at all. That is to protect the stallion from any harm and also to make it easier because she can't be moody, she's just here to get fucked.

Artificial insemination footage is also legal. A lot of zoophiles can get off to that, and it's still legal porn, despite the females not being able to agree whether they want to be probed and inseminated.

Australian Visitors Must Declare Illegal Porn To Customs Officers

Fumus Re:Yes office, (361 comments)

Where do you draw the line on what is natural?
I sure as hell am not going to believe crows used to drop walnuts on dirt. Yet, through their 'smarts' they have figured out that dropping walnuts on a street or hard pavement will often break it open. If that is natural behaviour, then whatever we humans come up with is also natural, because we are part of nature.

Fucking a goat is of course the "she did not consent!" argument, but what argument can you possibly have to say the dog does not want to fuck you when it actively humps anything it can grab?

Huge Shocker — 3D TVs Not Selling

Fumus Re:I know why.. lack of standardization (535 comments)

Crossing your eyes: Gives headaches. People find it hard to do.

Recently, I've rediscovered the "cross your eyes" double pictures and I wonder: does it really give any kind of 3D impression, or is it just all imagination? I can do quite well at crossing my eyes and getting a sharp image out of two identical side-by-side, and it did feel kind of 3D-ish, but logic tells me if they are both identical, I shouldn't see any 3D at all.

Survey Shows How Stupid People Are With Passwords

Fumus Re:pwdhash FTW (427 comments)

Unfortunately, on the rare occasion that the computer breaks and I'd want to log in on ebay from another computer I am kind of screwed since there is no way I can remember a random hashed password.

How Long Until We Commonly Use Flying Cars?

Fumus Re:Hover cars! (606 comments)

How about combining a hovercraft with a trolleybus? It stays above ground so no need for good roads, but it is attached to a rigid line going above the street, so turning is made easier, and the problem with stopping is solved.

Of course, this works only on city commutes, but it seems an interesting idea.

Why Are We Losing Vertical Pixels?

Fumus Re:Where.. (1140 comments)

Nowhere. But in 90% of cases, there will be little to no space between lines.

Why Are We Losing Vertical Pixels?

Fumus Re:Where.. (1140 comments)

Where did this obsession with Widescreen come from anyways?

Producing TVs and computer screens using the same materials is easier than having one line do 16:9 format and the other 16:10

Your reading speed will increase with the wider format, and that trend continues until a single line of text takes up a whopping 80-90 degrees of your horizontal field of vision.

Nope. Unless the text is very neatly organised, more than 5 lines of text with little spacing between them get confusing very fast. Reading a 'block of text' that occupies the entire screen horizontally is quite hard for me since I often need to recheck on which line of the text I am.
