This is stupid. Why would you not go after Apple? Why is there no organizations demanding the separation of their hardware and software? It's just an anti-Windows front.

This is very creepy. I wonder if you could use something like Project Natal to do it as well. We've gotta be a bit wary about internet-hooked up cameras in our homes.

British Hacker Loses Review of Asperger's Defense

Gay for Linux Re:FIST SPORT (278 comments)

Someone can go cry about brain scans all day, all it does is provide mental justification for sitting on their fat ass eating cheetos and playing world of warcraft. I've got zero pity and I'm going to laugh at them for what they are, fatasses eating cheetos playing world of warcraft.

As far as I can tell this guy isn't a kid. He's a 40 year old pretending to be mentally ill using the same defense that furries use to justify why they spend their days sexually suggestive anthropomorphic foxes with five nipples and then complain they can't get women.

Pirate Bay's Anonymity Service Enters Beta Testing

Gay for Linux Re:Does not store any personal details about clien (137 comments)

Right, I don't think the developers would log traffic or identifiable information. These are people who started a whole political party based around anonymity. Take the tin hat off. (And as the other poster said, you are confusing developers with the new owners of the domain.)

Pirate Bay's Anonymity Service Enters Beta Testing

Gay for Linux Re:Does not store any personal details about clien (137 comments)

I don't understand your point. It doesn't need to store personal details, it only needs to confirm that your login and id are valid.

After that, as long as it doesn't record the IP addresses you're visiting, it's effectively anonymous and thus valid.

Yes, Pirate Bay could secretly store that information, but I somehow doubt they would.

Most Companies Won't Deploy Windows 7 — Survey

We have no _CURRENT_ plans to deploy Windows 7. You're completely missing the point here. They may not be planning it RIGHT NOW but they're going to see how things turn out. That's not "skip completely."

Microsoft vs. Google — Mutually Assured Destruction

Gay for Linux Re:First Nuclear Weapon Equipped Post (416 comments)

The issue here is less whether competition or good or bad (competition is good) but whether a downward spiral of free crap (see Office being given away online) will reduce in loss-leaders that kill both business models leaving everyone bust.

Hence nuclear software wasteland.

Windows 7 Licensing a "Disaster" For XP Shops

Gay for Linux The whole thing is silly (567 comments)

From TFA: "Web apps tuned to Internet Explorer 6, which Microsoft has essentially orphaned. Windows 7 will ship with IE8, which has a compatibility mode for IE7, but not for IE6. And if IT retains IE7 in Windows 7, Silver notes that IE7 lacks an IE6 compatibility mode. So IT must rework its IE6-dependent Web apps or use XP mode to run IE6. Both are hassles."

When Apple releases a new OS and says it's not compatible with the old, there's a huge line to suck Steve Jobs' dick. "Support of legacy software has made Windows a bloated piece of shit. Apple's so smart."

When Microsoft makes a similar change people whine about all the hassles they'll have to go through.

Microsoft Will Ship Windows 7 in Europe With IE Unbundled

Gay for Linux Re:Getting Firefox? (578 comments)

Just because Microsoft's a big company doesn't mean you get to spit on it. Companies are made of people, people make products. The size, scale, and inclination toward profit are not bad things. You sound ridiculous.
As is the EU's lawsuits to begin with. Its their OS, they should get to bundle their software with it. As long as I can chose to install Firefox, which I do, I couldn't give less of a shit whether IE is on there. Don't want it there, don't install Windows. People have choices.

Kids Score 40 Percent Higher When They Get Paid For Grades

Gay for Linux Re:High-poverty (716 comments)

Rich kids need money less, that's pretty obvious. These kids need help getting out of their poverty situations. Just giving them money doesn't help; giving them money AND education to help them get a step ahead in life, that's genius.

Web Use Supposedly Falling Among Youth

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Jay writes "According to a recent Reuters article, a survey of youth in Australia "revealed a deep nostalgia among Australians aged between 16 and 30 for the past, when the world appeared to be simpler and friends met in person, not online ... the amount of time spent online by young adults [fell] by 30 minutes a week from last year."

While I don't pretend to be representative of youth, as someone in that age bracket living in NY, I've not noticed this trend in the slightest. I think they took too much of the sample from the Sydney equivalent of Brooklyn hipsters."

That next ad you click may be a virus

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Jay writes "The Wall Street Journal has an article about ad networks unintentionally selling empty space to malware loaders. "EWeek.com, a technology news site owned by Ziff Davis Enterprise, in February displayed an ad on its homepage masquerading as a promotion for LaCoste, the shirt maker. The retailer hadn't placed the ad — a hacker had, to direct users to a Web site where harmful programs would be downloaded to their computers, says Stephen Wellman, director of community and content for Ziff Davis." The labeling of the fake ad sellers as hackers is kind of funny; there's no hacking involved. Simply sign up for one of these networks, create your fake site, put up another company's creative, and you're good to go."

WB Took Pains to "Delay" Pirating of Dark

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Jay writes "The LA Times is reporting on a new studio tactic- not to prevent piracy, but to delay it, as was the case with special tactics used with Dark Knight. "Warner Bros. executives said the extra vigilance paid off, helping to prevent camcorded copies of the reported $180-million film from reaching Internet file-sharing sites for about 38 hours. Although that doesn't sound like much progress, it was enough time to keep bootleg DVDs off the streets as the film racked up a record-breaking $158.4 million on opening weekend. The movie has now taken in more than $300 million. The success of an anti-piracy campaign is measured in the number of hours it buys before the digital dam breaks.""

VoIP auto warranty scam being investigated

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Jay writes "Attorney Generals of states across the country are looking into a sleazy auto-warranty scam that has been dialing on people's cell phones and home phones utilizing VoIP technology to avoid detection. Many are receiving several phones calls a day, and the attorney general of Connecticut has received the calls himself. The scammers are avoiding Do Not Call list regulations, as well as laws against dialing cell phones. Since they appear to be using VoIP, incoming calls are listed as "unavailable," and are difficult to trace."

Is User-Generated Content Out?

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Jay writes "Claiming that we may be on the verge of a "Web 3.0," Newsweek discusses a shift from UGB to "experts" on the web. "The timing could be right for a new era in Silicon Valley, a Web 3.0. It comes, after all, during dark days for the ideal of a democratic Web. User-generated sites like Wikipedia, for all the stuff they get right, still find themselves in frequent dust-ups over inaccuracies, while community-posting boards like Craigslist have never been able to keep out scammers and frauds.""

Japan's Mobile Ad Market Tops US

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Jay writes "A Japanese business consulting firm has released a report showing that Japan is now ahead of the US in mobile advertising. Given Japan's cell phone prowess, this probably comes as little surprise, but it's rare in the online ad world that the US has to play catch-up. From the report: "Japan's mobile advertising market grew by 59.2% to US$ 565 MM in 2007, surpassing the US to become the world's leading mobile market, an indication that — after great anticipation — mobile online business has arrived.""

Cult Watch 2007

Gay for Linux Gay for Linux writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Jay writes "Mike Eglan summarizes the rises and fall of tech cults this year. "Success is hurting the Linux cult. As Linux grows more respectable in enterprises, its cult value wanes. Huge companies like IBM, HP and others now dominate public enthusiasm for the platform, which erodes its outlaw image and makes it harder to enlist new cult members. On the consumer desktop, it seems, pretty much everyone who is going to embrace it already has. So the faithful remain so, but their numbers are at best remaining constant and at worse, declining. The Linux cult moved this year from 4 Dixie cups of Kool-Aid to 3 1/2.""
