Ask Slashdot: Do You Trust When a Vendor Tells You To Buy New Parts?

GeneralTurgidson Not premature (156 comments)

Maybe some SOHO/small business networking gear gets retired prematurely, but for larger scale Cisco stuff the end of sale/end of life dates are way beyond when anyone would reasonably want to use the gear.

Inventor of OpenFlow SDN Admits Most SDN Today Is Hype

GeneralTurgidson Riding the hype train (62 comments)

I need to build a business around some new buzzword and sell it to VMware. Cloud and everything related to it has really stagnated development of other areas of IT in my opinion. Companies try and figure out WTF SDN is or how to integrate their networking stack with AWS instead of focusing on what's really happening in the IT world.

GeneralTurgidson ISP Provided? (109 comments)

If your ISP provides you an insecure router and your credit card numbers are subsequently stolen, whose fault is it? Especially when these routers are only configurable via your ISP?

Ubuntu 13.04 Will Allow Instant Purchasing, Right From the Dash

GeneralTurgidson Wrong Approach (273 comments)

Ubuntu would make more money by moving towards Red Hats model of licensing instead of their (outrageous) support hours. Their cost model for enterprise support is a huge reason my workplace won't use them.

GeneralTurgidson Sorry, but unsustainable (212 comments)

Valve's 'Steam Box' Console Is Real, Says Gabe Newell

GeneralTurgidson Microsoft's Biggest Mistake (298 comments)

Arguably, Valve probably wouldn't be pushing full "steam" ahead on this if Microsoft hadn't dreamt up a Windows Store. This is in my opinion a real game changer for the PC ecosystem and the future of Windows.

Where to start on home automation?

GeneralTurgidson GeneralTurgidson writes  |  more than 2 years ago

GeneralTurgidson (2464452) writes "I'm just starting to dip my feet into the world of home automation, and the Linux HA site is sparsely updated. I'd like to use software that is preferably open source (written in python or perl would be great!). Has anyone had successes with open source home automation? Any resources to share?"

Life After Cisco

GeneralTurgidson GeneralTurgidson writes  |  more than 3 years ago

GeneralTurgidson (2464452) writes "With the waning of the traditional "Cisco Shops" coming to an end, where do fellow slashdotters see corporate and carrier networks heading? Do you look to embrace a mixed vendor environment, or is there one vendor that provides all of your security, networking and management needs?"
