US House of Representatives Votes To Cut Funding To NSA

GeorgeMonroy Re:Calm down - it's not a real prohibition (164 comments)

From the news:

"he amendment would block the NSA from using any of its funding from this Defense Appropriations Bill to conduct such warrantless searches."

It only covers THIS appropriations bill. They'll just sneak funding into another one to make it up.

You have to pay careful attention to the language these people use.

" In addition, the amendment would prohibit the NSA from using its budget to mandate or request that private companies and organizations add backdoors to the encryption standards that are meant to keep you safe on the web."

So, money that is NOT budgeted, as in part of planned spending, as in slush fund money, is fair game.

Any time an amendment talks about what they cannot use particular money for, as opposed to simply prohibiting the action, it will be full of loopholes.

When there is an amendment that prohibits the ACTION, then we'll have something to be happy about. Nothing in this amendment prohibits the spying.

You can search anything all the time. When you are in the app store you start typing or bring up the charms menu on the right and type in the search field. This works for the whole OS. It is like having a built in Bing search everywhere anytime but for your local computer.

If you want to eat healthy then good luck buying groceries for $200 month per person. We rarely buy anything in the aisles where all of the crap food is. We mostly shop in the produce, meat and dairy sections you know the refrigerated sections. You cannot buy vegetables in bulk as they only last so long. To eat healthy is expensive. We don't even go for the "healthy" health nut products. We range anywhere from $300-$400 a month per person to eat healthy. So yeah if you want to eat like crap then by all means spend $200 a month per person. It takes money to eat healthy.

OSX definately is. The only time I have used the terminal in OS X Lion is to learn the commands because I want to learn them. In Windows they may be a bit more necessary but only if you do technical work. Linux has a long way to go.

Multipage PDF to Multipage TIFF and archiving

GeorgeMonroy GeorgeMonroy writes  |  more than 6 years ago

GeorgeMonroy (784609) writes "One of my clients has these aperture cards that they have been scanning into multipage PDF files but now they want them in multipage TIFFs instead. One of the reasons they gave for this is that TIFF files require less storage space. While that is true I wonder if TIFF is the best format going into the future. Are TIFFs better than PDFs for future use? I wonder what format you think would last longer. Are there any other formats that you think would be better or more future proof? To me storage is not a good enough reason to go to TIFF because storage prices are always dropping anyway. Also since they already have many of these files in PDF format and they want to convert them into multipage TIFFs are there any programs that you can recommend that will perform batch processing of files so that we do not have to convert each PDF one by one? If another file format is better than TIFF than are there any programs for batch processing that you can recommend? Many thanks in advance."
