Police Pull Over More Drivers For DNA Tests

GonzoPhysicist Re:three responses (562 comments)

The dog's sniffing around isn't even considered a "search" so it can't be illegal. Now the cop just has to claim the dog looked at him he right way and they can tear your car apart.

Movie Review: Ender's Game

GonzoPhysicist Re:Hitchhiker's Guide (732 comments)

But the books aren't even the original story, the radio program was. That's one of the best things about H2G2, in each of it's incarnations it starts the same way but the plot eventually diverges.

NYC's 250,000 Street Lights To Be Replaced With LEDs By 2017

GonzoPhysicist Re:I wish they'd do it here. (372 comments)

Monterey, CA did it a little while back. One nice side effect I've noticed is less light pollution compared to the presidio which didn't change their lights. No idea about the cost savings though.

Bill Gates Acknowledges Ctrl+Alt+Del Was a Mistake

GonzoPhysicist Re:Redundant keys (665 comments)

I often use it to get spell check results without moving a hand to the mouse, though it doesn't seem to show them in this text box (using Chrome).

New X Prize Quest: Sensors To Probe Oceanic Acid Levels

GonzoPhysicist Re:Paelo History (91 comments)

But the CO2 levels have never changed this fast before, there's a good chance evolution is too slow to keep up.

The Big Hangup At Burning Man Is Cell Phones

GonzoPhysicist Re:If you have to have cell service (167 comments)

Actually "people at Burning Man us[ing] their talents to actually do something constructive" is how the whole thing works. Where do you think all the art, events, bars, DJs, classes, and other fun stuff comes from? They weren't paid to be there.
While it is true that there are those that come to mooch off all this creativity and culture, but one of the central tenets is being part of the community and contributing to it.

Larry Ellison Believes Apple Is Doomed

GonzoPhysicist Re:He's right - Android is eating iOS's lunch (692 comments)

I don't think Charlie was talking about organization, for that some software is nice. But it shouldn't be awe-inspiring to be able to drag and drop a file to transfer data.

The Physics Behind Waterslides

GonzoPhysicist Re:Explain This (79 comments)

Inertial mass(F=m a) and gravitational mass(F=G M m/r^2) are the same so they cancel out of the equation, there is no approximation here. Setting the mass to zero either leads to infinite acceleration or no gravitational force.

The Physics Behind Waterslides

GonzoPhysicist Re:Explain This (79 comments)

I was taught that friction is not dependent on surface area, just the normal force and the surfaces' friction coefficient. That might all be irrelevant with a lubricating layer of water underneath.
