Boeing 777 Crashes At San Francisco Airport

GoodnaGuy Similar accident same plane in 2009 (506 comments)

Interestingly there was a similar accident in 2009. In that case a BA flight landed short of the runway at Heathrow. They decided in that case that it was due to a blocked fuel filter which had led to a sudden loss of power on the final approach. They fixed the problem for the future by redesigning the filter. Possibilities that come to find are 1. They haven't applied the repair to this plane 2. The crash investigators were mistaken about the cause of the accident and it was actually due to something else.

The Trajectory of Television: A Big History of the Small Screen.

GoodnaGuy Re:Television Importance Fading (134 comments)

Ads are the main reason I cant watch TV. Over here (Australia) some channels have as much as a quarter of their air time dedicated to adverts. I timed it once, 7 1/2 minute of programs to 2 1/2 minutes of ads. If you imagine the average person spending an hour a day watching TV, thats 1/4 an hour a day of ads or about 2 1/2 days a year. I visited France a few years back and they have a much better system. They have adverts, but they are only placed between the programs.

The Trajectory of Television: A Big History of the Small Screen.

GoodnaGuy Television Importance Fading (134 comments)

When I was younger I used to watch a lot of televsion and even look forward to the shows. Nowadays I dont even have a television, I get all my information from the Web. Television is no longer informative, watch a documentary and you'll spend an hour watching repeated film clips and commentary interspersed with maybe 20 minutes of adverts. Much more efficient reading articles on the web for what you are interested in. Television is just light entertainment. Also with the news, each countries news agencies have their own narrow agendas so you never really get the full picture of world events. Much better to visit online news sites of different countries and political views. Then you'll understand much better how things came to be the way they are.

What Keeps You On (or Off) Windows in 2013?

GoodnaGuy Re:Apps (1215 comments)

The main deciding factor for me is wether the app I want to run is available for the operating system in question. With windows the answer to that question is nearly always yes. Dont care too much about the underlying mechanics of the os. In the past I have been mainly a games developer and as nearly all game develpment systems are built round windows, I had to use that.

2013 Nominees For Hobby Gaming's Top Prize

GoodnaGuy Annoyed by award shows (29 comments)

Am I the only one who gets annoyed by the endless award shows that get thrown at us endlessly in the media nowadays? Dont people realize that a lot of them are advertising in disguise? If some eminent games designer or whatever thinks a game is good he can write an editorial telling us all about it or a review. Ithink I'll make up my own games award, Probably know one will pat attention to it but then that will be because I dont have the money to promote it or have the right connections rather than not knowing anything about games.

Set Your Watches For the End of Windows XP

GoodnaGuy What if PC spec to low to update? (712 comments)

My parents have a PC running XP. Its spec is to low to install windows 7 or vista. Looks like they'll either have to fork out some money for a new PC or else put up with the virus threat. Another point I thought of. If the spec for later versions of windows is higher does this not then mean that they run will slower compared to ealier versions of windows? So even if they could update they would be getting a worse performance. I think a lot of the people with the older version of windows are going to be oldies who have no idea about how to update windows or install linux as an alternative.

Iran Says It Sent Monkey Into Space and Back

GoodnaGuy This must be embarassing for human astronauts.. (425 comments)

...to know that their job can be done by a monkey. My job certainly couldnt be done by a monkey. You need a highly evolved human brain in order to program.

Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake Off Alaskan Coast

GoodnaGuy Re:Someone observed a 6 inch high Tsunami? (36 comments)

I mostly stick to metric except for peoples height. Still seems more natural to use feet and inches for that.

Magnitude 7.5 Earthquake Off Alaskan Coast

GoodnaGuy Someone observed a 6 inch high Tsunami? (36 comments)

The article says someone observed a 6 inch high Tsunami. How could they tell this from a normal wave? Is there a you tube video of it? I am sure it will be a hit.

USMA: Going the Extra Kilometer For Metrication

GoodnaGuy We need to decimalize time (909 comments)

10 days to a week, 10 hours to a day and 100 minutes to an hour. The only reason we use the current system is to do with the Babylonians and their love of base 6. They tried to get something like this started in the French revolution but it never caught on.

"Jedi" Religion Most Popular Alternative Faith In England

GoodnaGuy Disney has bought this religion apparently (262 comments)

I read in the news just last week that Disney has brought the rights to our religion. This is an outrage, we must protest this my brother Jedi. Surely you cant copyright a religion. Imagine if Disney copyrighted christianity or Pixar bought the rights to Islam.

Seas Rising Faster Than Projected

GoodnaGuy Re:Seems they are always underestimating the clima (605 comments)

Unfortuntaley I dont know any, along with most of the population so I'll have to base my understanding on what I hear on the news and trust they dont exaggerate things. They should have more actual scientists in the media explain how they things work but instead we have a lot of people telling us to be very worried based on "scientific consesus", but no real scientific explanation. I understand the basic idea about how they model climate based on models in computers but the climate of the planet is so complex involving so many factors I find it hard to believe that accurate predictions can be made based on this. Then when the predictions dont match the model it makes me at least think that the theory behind the prediction could be wrong. When you then add to this that this is now a political and econimic issue its easy to see that reporting can be prejudiced because of whats at stake.

Dirigible Airship Prototype Approaches Completion

GoodnaGuy Use Vacuum instead of Helium (231 comments)

This would require a smaller volume balloon than the equivalent helium balloon. There is the small technological breakthrough that needs to be made for the containment vessel. At the moment the only thing that can contain a vaccuum is something very thick and heavy like steel which would ruin the whole project.

Seas Rising Faster Than Projected

GoodnaGuy Seems they are always underestimating the climate (605 comments)

In general when someone makes an estimate of something, they are too low 50% of the time and too high 50% some of the time. Somehow they are always underestimating the figures. Doesn't seem very likely to me. More likely people are just exaggerating to get attention. If this isnt happening then looked at from a scientific point of view. If the model they are using for the climate is consistently giving figures that are too low, it doesnt mean we must give more credit to that theory, it means we must look for a new one.

Microsoft Makes Direct X 11.1 a Windows 8 Exclusive

GoodnaGuy Few titles will use DirectX 11.1 then (553 comments)

From a commercial point of view, when you release software on windows, you want to be able to target the most people possible. As most people won't have windows 8 for a while, no ones going to develop for it. Personally I am still using XP on my home computer and have found no problems with it. I bet theres quite a few people still on XP. Most software still runs perfectly well, plus its hardware requirements are lower.

Scientists Turn Air Into Petrol

GoodnaGuy Isnt this how trees work? (580 comments)

Trees take carbon dioxide and water together to make wood which we can then burn to generate energy. Much simpler and cheaper than setting up some complicated refinery.

Man Finds Roman Gold Coin Hoard Worth £100,000 With Metal Detector

GoodnaGuy I smell a rat (249 comments)

am I the only one smells a rat here? Gold roman coins are worth a lot more than gold alone, therefore a tidy profit is to be made by printing you are own fake roman coins and then claiming to have dug them up.

Lawsuit Challenges New York Sugary Drink Ban

GoodnaGuy If you follow this logic of this law then... (642 comments)

..many other restrictions will follow. burgers & fries are bad for you, therefore they must only be sold in small sizes (no big macs, quarter pounders). Liquor is unhealthy so must be banned. Fast cars kill more people than slow ones, so everyone must drive renault 5's and so on. Which is why I dont like this at all.
