NASA Video Shows What It's Like To Reenter the Earth's Atmosphere

Grow Old Timber Re:Re-entry is done wrong (73 comments)

The edge of space has too thin of an atmosphere for controlling anything. How can you stop going 32.000MPH slowly, without bouncing off like a pebble across water? This was the main concern about re-entry as I recall. Even if you could slow down slowly you would drop like a lead weight without a thicker atmosphere to slow the fall. So they quickly get into the controllable area ASAP.

Terrestrial Gamma Ray Bursts Very Common

Grow Old Timber The Earth is connected (69 comments)

to the rest of the solar system in ways we are just beginning to see. The electric sun theory explains most of it. Now we are filling in the "we're not sure why" parts and it is amazingly simple. Physics rule. Radioactive decay releases energy that has to go somewhere. Since you can not destroy energy, just transfer it, Storms are conduits to the ground or a catalyst. The gamma rays go out to be balanced with the force needed to equal the force absorbed electrically or magnetically (Ion based) by the Earth. Ions and gamma rays Oh my! A sort of St Elmo's fire? Only with a radioactivity spectrum. No telling what we might see next with our new eyes.

What Will Microsoft's "Embrace" of Open Source Actually Achieve?

Grow Old Timber He said movement, ha ha (216 comments)

Let's see,uh; Big Movement (bm) and Microsoft kind of go together. Not likely anyone will help them make their code or programming better for free, but good to see them trying to get some free publicity. I know! Why not sell a $50 operating system called Win10? And not a whittled down version, something with audio editing etc. That might actually stop people from using pirated software. Right now it's a toss up towards Linux (because it is getting better every year)

Single Group Dominates Second Round of Anti Net-Neutrality Comment Submissions

Grow Old Timber Re: I'd expect Fawkes masks to start making statem (199 comments)

I see the Koch brothers are well represented here too. Isn't there any way to stop the ball busting bastards? How rich does one need to be? World domination anyone? Lobbiests should be outlawed and another channel open to our congress. So we can be our own representatives. You know, like the internet?

How Birds Lost Their Teeth

Grow Old Timber The beaks won (138 comments)

In other words beaks are superior to teeth and won out in the stages of the evolution. Where do I go to get a beak installed? I have a friend that has a beak, that looks like a large nose. But he has teeth too We still call him "big bird"

Apparent Islamic Terrorism Strikes Sydney

Grow Old Timber Simply quit giving them media attention (876 comments)

Why does the media seem shocked at what they have created? Want to get on TV? Just pull a horrific crime. Geez My solution? put it on the backpage of the newspaper, if at all. You know, like the information the government wants subdued or hard to find. Do not give the life story of the idiot pulling these crimes just call them "scumbags." And reassure people it is a rare action and we have nothing to be fearful of. Curse CNN and their "breaking news" coverage. They ought to be held accountable for the copy cat crimes. Make it shameful to cooperate with criminal coverage.

Microsoft's New Windows Monetization Methods Could Mean 'Subscriptions'

Grow Old Timber Re:Consumers are cheap (415 comments)

PLUS with a cell phone you get a subscription discount for a contract of 2 years. Wonder if MS would consider half priced laptops in turn for using it for 2 years? At any rate, I am becoming a linux wannabe. Tried it for awhile and it seems very workable...

Why Elon Musk's Batteries Frighten Electric Companies

Grow Old Timber Re:Are they really that scared? (461 comments)

Arizona Public Supply Our electric company in Yuma announced 3 months ago that they were going to charge $4.95 per month for solar customers to connect to their grid to sell them back power. Their argument said they are providing a sort of 'storage means.' Sound like being worried to me.

Is a "Wikipedia For News" Feasible?

Grow Old Timber Re:US Con-Centric? (167 comments)

An example??? Why leave it up to me you doubter? Ok here's why; as the old saying goes "He who controls the media controls the people" Whether its not reporting all the facts or painting a rosy scene, it's lies. Don't ask for proof, sheep. Naaaah. Calling someone a "Coward" or "cowardly act" does not UNmake you one mr president. Just read or watch the BBC and draw your own conclusions. We ALMOST tell the truth...to be fair. No wonder we have lost all credibility in the world, except to maybe the GOP (Go On & Pee.) Like can you believe a cop who has a legal right to tell you anything that MIGHT help him convict you? Now I ALWAYS listen to both sides and believe me find the 'truth' somewhere in between the lines.

US School Installs 'Shooter Detection' System

Grow Old Timber remember dialing 911 and the Cellphone? (698 comments)

hundreds of kids with cellphones seems to be working fairly well...at giving an eyewitness accounting too. saying "Valuable valuable time will be lost" is a scare tactic aimed to sell a false sense of security. Imagine if we can sell all this 'war stuff' at home??? Wall street will love it and post whatever it takes. A sad statement for our fear mongering sales side of it. Don't buy it and call them out..

Buckyballs and Diamonoids used to create molecular diodes

Grow Old Timber Grow Old Timber writes  |  about 3 months ago

Grow Old Timber (1071718) writes "Scientists working at the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Sciences (SIMES) claim to have created a molecule-sized electronic component just a few nanometers long that conducts electricity in only the one direction. In essence, a rectifier diode, but one so small that it may one day help replace much bulkier diodes and other semiconductors found on today's integrated circuits to produce incredibly compact, super-fast electronic devices."

Will Microsoft deliver service pack 4 for XP before the deadline?

Grow Old Timber Grow Old Timber writes  |  about 10 months ago

Grow Old Timber (1071718) writes "Would they go through the expense to do a final service pack before the end of the the support date in an effort to keep the systems around and from switching to another OS, like Linux?
If they are going to offer some sort of paid support, wouldn't it be smart to get as many people on board before? The reason I ask is; I am tried of the endless updates Win7 has to go through every time I log on and off. XP just works better. Until Win9 makes a debut..."
