Teacher Suspended For Reading Ender's Game To Students

HisOmniscience I Went to This School (1054 comments)

I went to this school (quite a few years ago), and while infuriating, I don't find it surprising. Also, it wasn't just Ender's Game; the teacher also complained about the teacher reading "The Devil's Paintbox" by Victoria McKernan and "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case" by Agatha Christie: local newspaper.

The child had been disciplined by the teacher several times earlier in the year, so this is revenge by the parent.

PR Firm Unwisely Tangles With Penny Arcade

HisOmniscience Kotkin is a close friend of Christoforo (419 comments)

I was of the same mind as many others that the company that makes the controllers should not be (severely) punished for using a bad PR. However, Kotkin and Christoforo are close friends; Kotkin knows what kind of person Paul is, and still employed him despite there being previous complaints.

http://www.gameranx.com/updates/id/4224/article/ocean-marketing-s-paul-christoforo-has-a-history-of-domestic-violence/

Perhaps this is explainable, in the fact that David Kotkin and Paul Christoforo are 'bros' in real life. A bit of internet sleuthing reveals that the two run a business together in Miami called Afternoon Artists Inc. The relationship is hardly as innocuous as they would have any of us believe.
It would seem that Christoforo's own apology (via the previous Kotaku link), and Kotkin's decision to drop him come after the fact that he had been called out for his callousness, rather than from any actual sense of remorse.

PR Firm Unwisely Tangles With Penny Arcade

HisOmniscience Re:Here's the response from an email to them (419 comments)

It's real, however, it's not the full story. Kotkin is a close friend of Christoforo, and is only throwing him under the bus as a last resort.

I would have thought that a geneticist would realize that mutations aren't necessarily mistakes and are key to adaptations and evolution.

September Is Cyborg Month

HisOmniscience How to Celebrate (118 comments)

I think I'll celebrate by watching Cyborg 009. Though I can't remember if they're androids/robots or cyborgs. Guess I'll find out!

Interactive Exercise Company Sues Nintendo For Patent Infringement

HisOmniscience Re:They've also apparently patented plastic (67 comments)

How did those parents get a black zapper? I know Nintendo and Nyko sell their models only in white. (They could have painted it, but why bother.)

New Litigation Targets 20,000 BitTorrent-Using Downloaders

HisOmniscience Re:They Suck (949 comments)

Claiming that his "entire response is thinly veiled justification" is just pure trolling. The GP defined and gave examples for the definitions of steal and infringement in the law, and since this concerns the law, colloquial usage does not apply.

And yes, he did justify several personal and limited acts of copyright infringement, but they are not the gist of his post and only show how illogical copyright law is in the US.

And I'm sorry for feeding this troll.

MySpace Buys and Then Takes Down Imeem

HisOmniscience Re:Sweet (165 comments)

1. Imeem was one of the few sites that let users listen to specific artists, not "stations."
2. Both Youtube and Myspace are shitty.
3. Who said anything about me starting to illegally download (it's not piracy) music? I already do that, but this site was a great way to avoid doing that.

MySpace Buys and Then Takes Down Imeem

HisOmniscience Sweet (165 comments)

This site was great for trying out artists after a Pandora suggestion. Guess I'll have to go back to torrents for trying out new artists.

Federal Judge Says Corps of Engineers Liable For Katrina Damage

HisOmniscience Re:Fuck Yeah! (486 comments)

Cause it's not the poors' fault that they decided to drop out of school, not use contraceptives, raise their children in single parent homes, and continue to rely on welfare.

(Anecdote: my class had a 58% graduation rate... and that's normal for my area.)

IBM Researchers Working Toward Cheap, Fast DNA Reader

HisOmniscience Re:GET SOME PRIORITIES! (90 comments)

I know I'm feeding the troll, but, we have our priorities in order because this is more important than one horny old comedian. One person's actions/crimes are way less important than accurate, cheap DNA sequencing.

Sony Unveils PS3 Motion Controller

HisOmniscience Re:First! (210 comments)

Nintendo's solution requires not just the controller but also a sensor bar.

The motion controls for the Wii are handled by the internal components of the Wiimote and now the Motion Plus. The sensor bar is only used for onscreen pointers.

A creative programmer can use the IR for 3D, but nobody uses the Wii this way, most likely because it is underpowered.
