Ask Slashdot: DIY 4G Antenna Design For the Holidays?

Howard Beale Woktenna? (135 comments)

I've got a Virgin Mobile MC760 3G USB Modem, and am wrapping up using a wok skimmer as a parabolic antenna for it. I'm using a 11" skimmer, and went from two to four bars signal. Just have to finish the mounting and I'll be able to use it with our house wifi network through our router (it has a usb port and with dd-wrt I can use that for a failover connection when Comcast goes down). Here's the basic idea of it: http://geobray.com/2010/02/07/woktenna-for-3g/ Same idea, using USB wifi adapters: http://www.usbwifi.orconhosting.net.nz/

Ask Slashdot: What's the Best Place To Relocate?

Howard Beale One word.... (999 comments)

Singapore. I worked there for two weeks at the Marina Bay Sands project. English is the primary language, the area is beautiful and clean. Hated coming home. I'd still move my wife and kids there in a second.

New Reality Series: Be the Next Microsoft Employee

Howard Beale And the theme song is... (168 comments)

Steve, Steve
Steve of the Ballmer,
A guy who has no hair.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that chair.

Steve, Steve
Steve of the Ballmer,
Lives a life that's free.
(Ahhhhhhhh)
Watch out for that chair.

When he gets in a scrape,
he makes his escape
with the help of his friend,
a guy named Bill.
Then away he'll schlep
on his elephant Shep
While Fella and Ursula
Stay in step.

Well....Steve, Steve
Steve of the Ballmer,
Friend to you and me.

Watch out for that chair.

Fair price for an unlimited wireless data plan?

Howard Beale Re:$25 with Virgin Mobile (314 comments)

This. Have a VM Optimus V on the $25 plan, and though the phone/data speeds aren't the greatest, I enjoy not having to deal with the crap that AT&T and Verizon are giving their customers now. 300 minutes gets to be a bit tight sometimes, but I just found the free Vonage app that I can use to make calls over data for free.

After Recent US Storms, Why Are Millions Still Without Power?

Howard Beale Re:Solar Power (813 comments)

From when I put our solar install in, as far as New Jersey goes, you can't do that. Perhaps soon, with the number of outages and number of installs both going up.

After Recent US Storms, Why Are Millions Still Without Power?

Howard Beale Re:Trim the fucking trees (813 comments)

This. With Atlantic City Electric I see the same thing. Hurricane Irene's outages I blame on poor maintenance, trimming. This time around, the trees are shattered - it's amazing how some look.

After Recent US Storms, Why Are Millions Still Without Power?

Howard Beale Re:Solar Power (813 comments)

Problem with most solar installations were I live (and I have solar as well), this that we are currently required to have our solar shut down so it doesn't backfeed to the street. I understand there are ways around that, but we've got a generator and I'll live with that for now.

After Recent US Storms, Why Are Millions Still Without Power?

Howard Beale Been without power since 2am on the 30th (813 comments)

in southern New Jersey. Cell phone service seems back to normal as of late Monday. Power isn't expected to be back until the 6th, don't know about cable/internet. Thankfully I purchased a generator after Hurricane Irene last year - were without power/cable/internet for two days after that. Generator will cover a good bit of our needs, just need to make sure we don't overload it - as my wife did this morning. While I agree that the local utilities DON'T do enough preventative maintenance to trim back trees, etc., the amount of trees that look like they literally exploded is amazing. We were lucky and only had minor damage in our neighborhood, my parent's street looks like a war zone - but they live in a more developed town and have their utilities all restored.

Carrier IQ Software Found to be in IOS

Howard Beale Howard Beale writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Howard Beale (92386) writes "To date, the user tracking controversy surrounding Carrier IQ has focused primarily on Android, but today details are surfacing that the company also may have hooks into Apple's iOS. Well-known iPhone hacker Chpwn tweeted today that versions at least as recent as iPhone OS 3.1.3 contained references to Carrier IQ and later confirmed it's in all versions of iOS, including iOS 5."

Recovery from Carpal Tunnel / Ulnur Nerve Surgery

Howard Beale Howard Beale writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Howard Beale (92386) writes "I am recovering from recent surgery to my right arm for Carpal Tunnel and Ulnur nerve damage. In the next few days, the full-arm splint will be removed and physical therapy will start. For those of you that have had these surgeries, how successful has your recovery been? I'm afraid that I may need additional surgery down the road as my right shoulder exhibits the same pain as the elbow did; and my left arm sometimes has the same symptoms."
