Multi-Server Microkernel OS Genode 12.11 Can Build Itself

IQgryn Re:No plans for LLVM (102 comments)

Also, I'm pretty sure GCC is the only compiler that requires the better part of an afternoon on modern hardware to build itself.

With parallel make, it only takes me about 20 minutes on a midrange 6-core system. Look at the -j or --jobs option. I usually use 1.5 times the number of cores for the number of jobs.

Ddclient will update every so often anyway, and I'd imagine most others do the same.

Computer Glitch Friday Grounded US Airways Flights

IQgryn Re:Last, and Dead Last (140 comments)

RAID 5 is good at losing a second disk soon after the first, even with a hot spare (which means you lose the array). I think the GP meant something like "RAID 6 should be the bare minimum", or perhaps "any level of RAID is not as good as having an independent backup system".

But I'd like to know what they actually meant, too.

It also modulates the brakes much better than most people can do, and allows your panic reflex to work for you.

Steering around an obstacle while braking hard to have time to fully get around it is often the best response.

How exactly would you propose splitting it? Advertising is their only real money-maker, and splitting that would be shooting themselves in the foot.

Apple Remove Samba From OS X 10.7 Because of GPLv3

IQgryn Re:Article and summary get it wrong (1075 comments)

DRM and keys prevent you from using your version of the software on that device. It does you no good to be able to change it if you can't use the changes. The developers have decided they don't like that idea, and GPL 3 ensures that anyone who wants to lock their device down like that will have to use some other software, instead of taking something open source and locking it down too.

There's nothing to stop Apple or anyone else from implementing something compatible; it just can't be the same code.

From Redmond With Love

IQgryn Re:From Redmond with love, huh? (140 comments)

I'm sure arranging for a cake to be sent could take the entire day for the entire Microsoft dev team.

I bet not, though. Especially the Windows devs, which, by and large, aren't the IE devs.

The State of Linux IO Scheduling For the Desktop?

IQgryn May be Fixed (472 comments)

The 2.6.36 kernel supposedly has a fix for this issue. I haven't been able to test it yet myself, but it sounds like they finally tracked it down. See here for more information.

Microsoft Losing Big To Apple On Campus

IQgryn Statistics are sometimes skewed for convenience... (764 comments)

At IIT (the Illinois one, not the one in India), the tech department didn't collect this sort of data. But if they had, they would've thought I ran one Windows machine instead of two Linux boxes, because they didn't know Linux and would not help me get the network going unless I told them I was running a single Windows or Mac computer. I ended up getting all the network settings for Windows and putting them in the right place myself, and hiding both systems behind a router. Several of my friends had similar experiences.

I will note that many of my professors, especially in the CS department, used Linux almost exclusively, and some actually would not accept Microsoft Office documents (they allowed pdfs and sometimes OpenOffice documents). There was just a huge disconnect between the people in charge of the student portion of the network and the rest of the campus.
