White House Punts On Petition To Allow Tesla Direct Sales

Infiniti2000 Re:What? (382 comments)

It's pure opinion of what's a joke petition and what isn't. If you say the death star is a joke petition and there's no frivolous determination of such petitions, then either the administration can arbitrarily choose or perhaps just treat them all as jokes. I think the response to the Tesla petition is fine. The administration should do nothing on this, not because I don't care but looking at it from their perspective, it's not worth it. It's a hugely problematic, very inflammatory discussion to talk about taking away state rights in favor of federal rights. The white house should pick their battles on that and this is certainly not one of them. So, while Tesla may be less of a joke petition than the Death Star, it's still a joke petition.

Chemists Build First "Buckyball" Made of Boron

Infiniti2000 This is cool shit (39 comments)

This is some cool shit. The carbon buckyballs spurred development and interest in carbon nanotubes and some other nano-material stuff. I hope this provides some more funding and interest.

Star Cluster Ejected From Galaxy At 2,000,000 MPH

Infiniti2000 Re:Towards Us (133 comments)

It was a lot of zeroes so if I missed an order of magnitude, my apologies. I'm not gonna double check again, though, because I think mil or bil doesn't matter. :)

Star Cluster Ejected From Galaxy At 2,000,000 MPH

Infiniti2000 Towards Us (133 comments)

The Virgo Cluster galaxy, M87, has ejected an entire star cluster, throwing it toward us at more than two million miles per hour.

I can imagine people getting alarmed at this, but they shouldn't. If it's truly directly towards us (unlikely), and never veers off course (unlikely), it would still take about 18.3 million years to reach us.

Speedier Screening May Be Coming To an Airport Near You

Infiniti2000 Re:I saw faster screening at Orlando (163 comments)

I agree and would further suggest that it's a form of legalized racketeering. In effect, the system created an inefficient process (racket) and then is attempting to charge us for speeding things up. How this isn't racketeering is beyond me.

Wozniak Gets Personal On Innovation

Infiniti2000 Analogy to Movies (161 comments)

A similar comment can be made about movies. I hate remakes and especially reboots. Even movies made from book are better than remakes. Can you come up with something new?

However, I disagree a little with Woz here because it's critical to improve existing technology. True innovation is difficult and important, but improving those first bits of technology is probably as crucial. The obvious case in point is the mobile phone. It has been around quite a while, but our lives are greatly affected by recent technologies (including infrastructure).

Judge Rules BitTorrent Cases Must Be Tried Separately

Infiniti2000 Re:Well thats a first (60 comments)

I don't insist, but prefer on-line and free and yes I understand the risks therein. I concede your point, not being an attorney myself, but I would think that the distinction in this word is not really useful. Why is it important to say that you can prosecute a criminal case, but not a civil one? I don't present this as counter-evidence, but the first link on searching for "civil prosecution" brings up some LA community college using it.

Wiktionary disagrees with your suggestion in the terminology. But, it's not like anyone really gives a shit about this pedantry.

Amherst Researchers Create Magnetic Monopoles

Infiniti2000 What is it? (156 comments)

For the lay people in this particular field, from TFA (also, wiki link):

As the name suggests, however, a magnetic monopole is a magnetic particle possessing only a single, isolated pole—a north pole without a south pole, or vice versa.
