Does Your PC Really Need a SysRq Button Anymore?

JCSoRocks Re:I don't recall ever using it... (806 comments)

I tried using the Clipper Tool once when I first got Vista. I have never used it again. When do you want just a tiny piece of a window? Not very often. Alt-PrtScn works just fine TYVM.

Google Launches Public DNS Resolver

JCSoRocks Re:At least they have a clear privacy policy (540 comments)

Based on this information, I'm officially switching. The first time I came across an advertisement rather than a failed DNS lookup I was not happy. It's incredibly annoying.

Offset Bad Code, With Bad Code Offsets

JCSoRocks Re:Not realistic (279 comments)

In other news, a handful of well known FOSS projects are reported to have been given an incredible amount of money. Apparently the sum total of the donations is remarkably close to equaling Microsoft's cash reserves. Microsoft, however, has not commented on this claim.

Mafia Wars CEO Brags About Scamming Users

JCSoRocks Re:Absurd application rights are to blame (251 comments)

Wow, there are games that require you to have a certain number of friends? That explains a lot... I kept wondering why people that I didn't even know - friends of friends - persisted in attempting to friend me. What an idiotic system. I can't believe facebook allows that crap... wait, yes I can, they don't care.

Facebook Awarded $711 Million In Anti-Spam Case

JCSoRocks Re:Time for the death penalty (179 comments)

Hmm, this is an interesting concept. However, to carry it to its natural extreme.... what then would we do with Microsoft? I've wasted hundreds of hours of my life trying to fix their crap.

What's this MTV that you speak of? Are you talking about that channel that only makes trashy reality shows for teens and drunk college kids?

Federal Summit Eyes Crackdown On Texting While Driving

JCSoRocks Re:Why do the states text then? (408 comments)

Receiving a text is very different than sending one. I'll read a text or a brief email while I'm driving. It's not much different from looking down at your stereo. Actually composing a text requires that you focus both on what you want to say and hitting the proper buttons to say it.

Court To Scammer, "Give Up Your House Or Go To Jail"

JCSoRocks Re:WTF? (152 comments)

That sounds better to me too. Punishing these people is a start but the reality is we need to do a better job of educating consumers. As long as there are suckers there will be people trying to scam them.

Secret GPS Tracking Now Legal In Massachusetts

JCSoRocks Re:GPS Blocking (277 comments)

Topping off your car in Oregon is illegal now too. Pretty soon it'll be required that you have a hazmat suit and a special "vehicle fuel dispensing" license just to put gas in a car. Ugh.

Congress Mulls Research Into a Vehicle Mileage Tax

JCSoRocks Re:Ummmm (792 comments)

They may whine but I would counter their argument with an argument about wear and tear on the road. I have no stats to back up my claim but my guess would be that a tractor trailer or a hummer would do just a bit more damage to the road surface than a Prius would. They should, therefore, pay more than the prius owner.

Congress Mulls Research Into a Vehicle Mileage Tax

JCSoRocks Re:Ummmm (792 comments)

This. Don't let the government fool you. They're not in the business of taxing you less or taking taxes away. They're in the business of lining their pockets. Yes, I've become a bit cynical over the years.

The same is true in Oregon with sales taxes. There are always people pushing them. What they always leave out is that they aren't going to decrease property taxes, state income taxes or any other source of state revenue accordingly. They're just going to tax you even more than before.

Where do you buy your "nerd" gear?

JCSoRocks JCSoRocks writes  |  more than 6 years ago

JCSoRocks (1142053) writes "I've spent the last 9 years living about 5 minutes from a Fry's Electronics. Apparently, I was spoiled. I recently moved and made the mistake of going to Staples just to pick up some canned air and a network cable. I'm no stranger to online shopping (I just ordered my new machine from NewEgg and built it a few months ago) but sometimes you need something NOW! Between that Staples experience and the brutal Best Buy post from yesterday, http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/10/29/1833227, I'm left wondering — where the heck do you buy tech stuff anymore?"
