Ask Slashdot: How Do You Fight Usage Caps?

Jafafa Hots Re:My mother married a farmer (353 comments)

I'm in the San Francisco Bay area, and the speeds here are the worst and the prices the highest of anywhere I've ever lived.

Sometimes I say that in response to people claiming it's more expensive in rural areas because the cost of infrastructure is higher than in populated areas.

Other times people tell me it's high here because there's a huge population and so more people to serve.

Here in the epicenter of the internet, internet service sucks, and everyone uses contradictory excuses for it.

The REALITY is that prices are high in the US because we have virtual monopolies and no regulation to speak of, and so capitalists do what capitalists do in those conditions:

They gouge.

Copyright Drama Reaches 3D Printing World

Jafafa Hots Re:learn to read, or think (258 comments)

The Supreme Court has ruled that copyright infringement is NOT THEFT.

So if you want to convince someone they are wrong in thinking that copyright infringement is not theft, you'd better start at the top.

Either that or stop blathering your ignorance all over the place.

I'll listen to the Supreme Court over some random internet jackass... and the Supreme Court has ruled that copyright infringement IS NOT STEALING.

If you don't like that FACT, take it up with SCOTUS.

How about lets just decide to not tell people what they can and can't print with their 3-d printers?

Apart from public hazard kind of items, at least.

One, it's fiberboard so it swells up and falls apart after a rain.
Two, it gives off formaldehyde fumes.

Pinholes and Plastic Wrap Make Solid Walls "Transparent" To Sound

I lived for two years in Clearwater, FL near the gulf.
Hotter than hell, but everyone used to say "but there's always a nice breeze!"

I'm not sure how you call what feels like an open blast furnace "a nice breeze."

Yahoo Board Approves a $1.1B Pricetag For Tumblr

Jafafa Hots Re:Strange (142 comments)

The only problem with that scenario is that it was Yahoo that bought it.

Which means Tumblr will go the way of Flickr. It will be milked and ignored until it's about as dated as black and white TV.

Ask Slashdot: How To Stay Ahead of Phone Tracking ?

Jafafa Hots Re:turn it off (259 comments)

The fact that you use the word "dodgy" leads me to think you may not be American, since that is not commonly used here.

What the gvt. considers "dodgy" is a considerably broader category here in the land of the free.

Wiping a Smartphone Still Leaves Data Behind

Jafafa Hots Re:A contrived test: old phone, old operating syst (155 comments)

But you're assuming that everyone who had an older phone ran out and ditched it the moment the new ones came out and thus there are no older iPhones with older software in use.

Oh wait... we're talking about Apple. Ok, yeah, everyone DID immediately ditch their old phone the moment the new model came out. Nevermind.

Ask Slashdot: How To Stay Ahead of Phone Tracking ?

Jafafa Hots Re:turn it off (259 comments)

compromised software - that is the key.
If they decide they want to use your phone as a bug, I wouldn't be too surprised if they could root your phone or change the firmware so that when you push "off" it gives you all of the usual "off" sounds and screens and goes blank... except.

It has to still be active in some way for it to know when you press "on," after all.

It's not like any phones have an actual physical off switch that literally physically opens a circuit. A sliding switch that goes "click?" I haven't seen one of those.

Fighting TSA Harassment of Disabled Travelers

Jafafa Hots Re:Loopholes (525 comments)

Even the experts say the liquid thing is BS.

And we go though the whole thing because some numbskulls in the UK were fantasizing about doing "something" and had some notes referring to the idea of making a bomb from liquids. We hyped these wannabees who had no real knowledge or expertise nor probably any actual intent as "terrorists" and hyped thier "plot" curing a politically convenient time to make it look like we were doing important things... when in fact the "underwear bomber" was a genius in comparison... and now we're stuck with these insane limits.

I was in line behind a guy thatn the TSA agent threatened to arrest because the ziplock he had his 3 oz bottles in wasn't the proper one-quart size, and he had a chapstick not in the bag. The TSA guy put the chapstick in the baggie so it would not be so dangerous.

Supreme Court to Decide Whether or Not You Own What You Own

Jafafa Hots Jafafa Hots writes  |  more than 2 years ago

Jafafa Hots writes "The Supreme Court is set to decide, in the case of Kirtsaeng v. John Wiley & Sons, whether or not First Sale Doctrine applies to products made with parts sourced from outside the United States.
If the Supreme Court upholds an appellate ruling, it would mean that the IP holders of anything you own that has been made in China, Japan or Europe, for example, would have to give you permission to sell it.
Your old used CDs, cell phone, books, or that Ford truck with foreign parts? It may not be yours to sell unless you get explicit permission and presumably pay royalties.

âoeIt would be absurd to say anything manufactured abroad canâ(TM)t be bought or sold here,â said Marvin Ammori, a First Amendment lawyer and Schwartz Fellow at the New American Foundation who specializes in technology issues."

College Credits for Trolling the Web?

Jafafa Hots Jafafa Hots writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Jafafa Hots writes "As pointed out on Richard Dawkins' website, (www.richarddawkins.net/article,4149,Dembski-Exam,William-A-Dembski---designinferencecom) some undergraduate and masters level courses at the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary require trolling as part of their requirements. In William Dembski's classes on Intelligent Design and Christian Apologetics, (www.designinference.com/teaching/teaching.htm), 20% of the final grades come from having made 10 posts defending Intelligent Design Creationism on 'hostile' websites. There seems to be no requirement that the posts contain original writing, apparently cut and paste jobs are sufficient. Is this the first case of trolling the net being part of course requirements?"

Has PBS's website been infected with malware?

Jafafa Hots Jafafa Hots writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Jafafa Hots writes "Doing a search on information for the PBS Nature program "Land of the Falling Lakes," I was surprised to find in Google's search results a malware warning that PBS's site might harm my computer. I've seen this warning before, but never on results pointing to a mainstream site.

What's going on? Is PBS infected, or does Google's malware detector return false positives?"

The one thing you need in life

Jafafa Hots Jafafa Hots writes  |  more than 12 years ago

If there is one gift you could give your child, only one thing or trait you could leave them with, the most important is self-confidence. Self-confidence, mixed with the proper amount of humbleness (which is NOT the opposite) is the one thing from which all other skills and accompishments can come.

Unlike my father, who took (and still takes) every opportunity to belittle and diminish our self-worth, our feeling of ability and competence, I think that if I were lucky enough to ever become a dad I would make sure to instill a feeling of self-confidence in my child.

My child would feel able. I would also be sure my child knew they were loved. Unfortunately it's unlikely I'll ever be able to be a dad.

Well, been back home from the psych ward about 4 days now and the depression is coming back. I'm not suicidal again (yet), though... but this place is really fucking up my head.

Stopped taking the depakote, it was giving me serious chest pains.
That freaked out my therapist, but I'm not gonna be up all night writhing on the floor in pain each night...

Things are just generally going kind of sucky, but I'm getting a little help now.
