Ask Slashdot: Professional Journaling/Notes Software?

JamesA DokuWiki (170 comments)

I used to use organized .txt files but switched to DokuWiki.

https://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuw...

Now I can access notes from all of my devices and share them easily with associates as well.

I tried Evernote, MediaWiki, Atlassian's Confluence and a ton of other options but DokuWiki is the only solution I have found that makes managing a notebook easy, fast and enjoyable.

Ask Slashdot: Are AdBlock's Days Numbered?

JamesA Dangerous (731 comments)

Sorry but when an errant ad can serve malware (see Yahoo) it's just not worth taking a chance.

Web site operators have the attitude that their revenue stream is more important than the integrity of their visitors computer.

AdBlock + NoScript is antivirus for the web.

White House Reportedly Dismissing Key Healthcare.gov Contractor

JamesA Out of the frying pan and in to the fire (284 comments)

A company so bad they had to change their name from Anderson Consulting to escape the stench.

More appropriately named Assenter. Next up to the gravy train will be Toillette and Douche.

GIMP, Citing Ad Policies, Moves to FTP Rather Than SourceForge Downloads

JamesA The End (336 comments)

When I find an interesting project still hosted on SourceForge it's almost a sure sign it's dormant and/or dead. It's become the seedy back alley of the FOSS movement.

Combine it with download.com and let them die together.

All hail to the mighty Octocat.

Ask Slashdot: Best SOHO Printer Choices?

JamesA HP Color LaserJet m551 (381 comments)

If you're in the market for a small workgroup color laser I highly recommend the HP LaserJet m551dn.

It's around $800 up front but with a life expectancy of >10 years it's worth every penny. The print quality is excellent, it's nearly silent, and the JetDirect has tons of features for authentication. authorization and auditing allowing restrictions to be set on usage. You can even control who is allowed to use color vs monochrome.

As for scanning the $100 HP OfficeJet 6700 works and is completely supported in Windows, OS X and Linux (with hplip).

Groklaw Turns Ten

JamesA SCO (50 comments)

I wish someone would put together a final analysis of the fiaSCO and all of the players. There was a lot of underground activity that Groklaw did not cover fully such as Yarro, Robbins, the 'suicides', the message board trolls (Merkey?) etc.

It would be great to see interviews from the perspective of the last rats off the ship and how they feel about the whole thing. By this time there has to be people ready to tell the real story.

There's a book waiting to be written here.

SpaceShipTwo Tests Its Rocket Engine and Goes Supersonic

JamesA Speed? (103 comments)

Why is it taking Virgin Galactic so long for development? Is it a financing or technical issue?

SpaceX was founded in 2002 and is already making re-supply missions to the ISS. Granted that's not quite the same as human spaceflight but it seems like there's a lot faster advancement occurring at SpaceX than at Virgin Galactic.

Nest Labs Calls Honeywell Lawsuit 'Worse Than Patent Troll'

JamesA Backfire (137 comments)

I've been thinking about replacing my home Honeywell thermostats (2) with Nests so that I can link, control, and monitor them more effectively. The news of this lawsuit has pretty much sold the deal.

I don't think Honeywell thought about the Streisand effect.

Google To Acquire Motorola Mobility For $12.5 Bill

JamesA Motorola Symbol (578 comments)

I wish Google would buy the Motorola Symbol division so we could see Android on their industry leading mobile computers (ie barcode scanners). The embedded Windows CE / Windows Mobile on those devices is garbage.
