Ask Slashdot: How Dead Is Antivirus, Exactly?

JeanInMontana Re:Never mind the quantity, feel the quality (331 comments)

Good antivirus programs have the capability to identify suspect behavior via heuristics and stop many would be infections. Symantec has long been at the back of the pack in producing a product that doesn't slow a PC's performance to a crawl they can't seem to come up with a product that does the job without hogging up all system resources. Poor Symantec. Crying sour grapes IMO. PC security is not a one program and your set operation. Layers of protection make for a secure system. Firewall, antivirus and antimalware,(yes there is a difference between antivirus and antimalware) are recommended by those of us who have and are working the trenches on help forums removing infections for users who fall victim to malware. I would add use an ad blocker , often this is where the nasties lie in wait, if the user doesn't see the ad they don't click. Don't click on random links in emails, text messages etc. You can infect an entire network from one bad link or site. Users are often to blame because they engage in known risky behavior or don't bother with updates to the system or the products they may or may not use for protection. Parents need to restrict kids abilities to install without approval. Kids are often targeted because they are easy to fool. Running non administrative accounts for everyone makes it much harder to get infected. Only use the admin account when you must install new software you know to be safe. Anyone complaining about constant updates is an idiot. Be glad to see your software is updating that only means it is doing it's best to stay ahead of the bad guys.

Ask Slashdot: Communication With Locked-in Syndrome Patient?

JeanInMontana Locked In & Communication (552 comments)

First, my deepest sympathies to everyone who loves her. Second, I hope some of you asshats NEVER deal with this but that you grow up! Third, give her time it's not been a week since she went through a major trauma. Make sure she gets to have her baby near her for both of them. She may not be able to hold the baby but it can lay on her or beside her. Let her rest. Previous posters said keep the conversation positive and easy to answer questions. Make sure her body is getting lots of massage and movement to prevent atrophy and for stimulation. I found this also http://www.northeastern.edu/ne... this is a PDF on another method http://www.neurology.org/conte... I think the first link would be most affordable but all info is worthy of investigation. I think time is going to be most beneficial and positive thinking. I hope for the best for all of your family.

PM Calls Facebook Irresponsible For Allowing Beheading Clips

JeanInMontana Re:PM? Which country (201 comments)

Sure, as a non professional, I occasionally make mistakes. It's a comment though, not a front page article. I have no idea why you think that submitted stories aren't edited.

There is no editing mistake in the submission. Why should poorly constructed comments be OK when they refer to proper editing? Come on, what's good for the goose is good for the gander.

PM Calls Facebook Irresponsible For Allowing Beheading Clips

JeanInMontana Re:PM? Which country (201 comments)

LMAO you criticize Slashdot for not editing, when you don't bother spell checking your own stuff?

A single post is not the same as a submission on one of the worlds most popular tech news sites.

Think before you post next time.

I did think before I posted. There are glaring typos in every post from the poster I am having the conversation with. Thus making complaints about Slashdot's editing is hypocritical at best. Besides there is nothing wrong with the original submission in question.

PM Calls Facebook Irresponsible For Allowing Beheading Clips

JeanInMontana Re:PM? Which country (201 comments)

Point taken about rudeness (although that's not uncommon amongst slashdotters). I do think that Slashdot editors could edit once in a while though; providing the information would be good form. Most non-US publications will refer to "US President Barrack Obama" for prety much this reason even though it would be pretty astounding to find someone who doesn't know who Barrack Obama is. Adding the word "British" to the headline would have made this more immediately comprehensible.

LMAO you criticize Slashdot for not editing, when you don't bother spell checking your own stuff? Not up for an argument but you might want to follow your own advice. Slashdot is not edited, it is user submitted snippets of info with links back to the source, more about the discussion of the subject than journalistic skills. Slashdot has many 'Anonymous Cowards' who are rude posters and trolls. However that is no reason to condone that behavior or participate.

Facebook Isn't Accepting New Posts, Likes, Comments...

JeanInMontana Re:And so... (258 comments)

Wonderful. I won't have to know what time my neighbors kids were picked up by the bus or what uplifting JPEG my old girlfriend shared today.

You don't have to know any of it. Use your settings or unfriend those whom you don't want to see things from.

You don't even have to unfriend. You can 1) hide updates from specific persons and apps in your news stream or 2) stop interacting with them and they will automatically be deprioritized and fade away from your news stream unless they do something that gets a lot of attention/likes from others, then that post can pop up again. With both 1) and 2) you can still go in and look at their updates if you want to.

Excellent. I was being lazy and a bit sarcastic. It does amaze me how many have no clue they control what they see in the news feed. Those are the ones who also compromise their own security and all who are friends, because they don't take responsibility for learning about how to secure accounts and the importance of keeping personal info private.

PM Calls Facebook Irresponsible For Allowing Beheading Clips

JeanInMontana Re:PM? Which country (201 comments)

He's criticising Slashdot. Whether he googles or not, Slashdot should still have provided this information. There's no reason not to say "British PM". Perhaps he should know. Perhaps everyone should, but for any snippet of information, there will be a non trivial number of people who are not aware of it. Good journalists provide the information concisely withut forcing the reader to get key details elsewhere.

Slashdot did not make the submission. The link provided in the submission gives the reader all the information needed. There is no need for the poster you are defending to react in such a rude way.

Social Networks Force Barilla Chairman To Apologize For His Anti-gay Remarks

JeanInMontana Re:FFS (456 comments)

The guy is entitled to his opinion and to run the company as he wishes. If you don't like it don't buy it. Enough with the stupid fucking boycotts that are nothing but attempts at silencing free speech.

And wtf does a pasta makers stance on gays have to do with slashdot anyway? Can we stop pushing an agenda yet?

What agenda would that be? Human rights? Equal rights? The right to not support a bigot? News is news and that is all about Slashdot. Seems you are a bit phobic.

Obviously new measuring equipment is needed. Perhaps even a neutral agency to do the measuring. Sorry to see this submission is not getting the attention it deserves. It was submitted nearly a full half hour before the submission rated red.

Seriously, admit Bush was a miserable failure as a president.

Monkey boy was a bad president. His predecessor is far worse, though.

Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone To Facebook: Start a Premium Subscription Service

JeanInMontana Re:Adblock + (156 comments)

ABP and their ilk might work effectively on sites where you do not have an "account". On sites that you do, they already have a mechanism to identify you and all ABP does would be to block the ad content from being displayed. The tracking and mining cannot be avoided.

Of course, if just not displaying the ads is your concern, all is well

Even the paid Google Apps for Domain product has a check box to let Google display ads as it would for non-paid accounts. It probably implies Google is tracking and mining content from the paid accounts, even if the ads (which obviously utilize the output of the analytics) are not displayed.

n this context, it is laughable that anybody would pay FB to just not display ads, but have them tracked and their data mined anyway.

Of course the tracking can be stopped and for free. Simply get Do Not Track Me and baddabing no more tracking. Firefox also has the option to tell pages not to track you, of course the naughty pages still do, but not with DNTM.

Your all-time total is: 109,476 blocked

Oh and Slashdot was tracking me.

Texas & Florida Vie For Private Lunar Company Golden Spike's HQ

JeanInMontana Re:Has the world gone mad? (38 comments)

by Bearhouse What sane legislator would seriously want to associate themselves with the hucksters at Golden Spike?

Why should any legislator, sane or insane associate themselves with this in the first place? This is a private sector business. As for costs your numbers seem a bit high even for Government funded projects and really have nothing to do with this one since it is private and on a smaller scale I'm sure. No $400.00 hammers etc. :-)

Skype Overload Interrupts Zimmerman Trial

JeanInMontana Re: WTH?? (325 comments)

This murderer is going to walk on technicalities! The court itself should be setting up and Skype calls and hopefully have someone who knows what the hell they are doing!

Why is this rated as flame bait? That is bullshit as someone who has modded plenty of sites including this one my comment is in no way flame bait. However these personal attacks below calling me a name I won't repeat, and dickless; most women are and of course you three as well. The racist hate speech, now those should be removed and the people making those comments banned.

by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday July 03, 2013 @07:29PM (#44184561 Murderer? He just whacked a future felon. We should give Zimmerman a medal.****** by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday July 03, 2013 @07:35PM (#44184597) He is not a murder because he was defending his own life against a thug. Jean, you really need to shut the fuck up. You are a stupid cunt, regardless of your gender.******** by Anonymous Coward on Wednesday July 03, 2013 @09:19PM (#44185241) Forget dickless Jean. I want to know when Martin's mother and father finally get nailed to the wall for being one of the worlds worst parents. They raised this little punk-ass nigger to live a niggerly lifestyle. They should be brought up on charges for endangerment to society

Noted Anonymous Cowards have lots to say as they hide behind the monitor mommy and daddy got them for 'school'. Stick to Facebook kiddies until you grow up enough to stand behind the shit spewing from your Anonymous Coward keyboard. ~~~~ That's Flame Bait!! However I don't waste my time on racist misogynistic cowards, so this is my final comment.

Skype Overload Interrupts Zimmerman Trial

JeanInMontana Re:Whole Trial is bullshit (325 comments)

This is an obvious case of self defense, if the thug that attacked Zimmerman wasn't an African-American, there would be no trial. There was too much race baiting and fake charges of murder were trumped up to appease the Martin family. My message to the Martin family is clear. If your son was not a THUG, he would be still be here.
