Jeek Elemental karma (1027 comments)

If I can support good (android, not saying its perfect) and boycott assholery (microsoft since day 1) why not?

Why Your Dad's 30-Year-Old Stereo Sounds Better Than Yours

Jeek Elemental Still research, just not from the big names (674 comments)

Theres excellent gear available from small vendors that specialize, in all price ranges.

A system with

2 small stand speakers
1 powered sub (must play bass, not 1 frequency)
DAC hooked to your pc running mpd or something (make sure it doesnt resample)
1 decent 100W-ish integrated amp

can sound fantastic and doesnt have to cost much.
You DO have to take the time to position the speakers, as it affects the sound enormously, but the sub makes it a lot easier.

Terror Attack On Norwegian Government

Jeek Elemental Re:Norwegian Spring? (401 comments)

Much of the west coast is luke-warm year round cause of the gulf stream, inland it gets pretty frosty tho.
The church burning thing was popular a while but is old hat now (also running low on suitable churches, new ones are pure asbestos).

US Government Releases DoD Report Critical of NSA

Jeek Elemental banana republic (38 comments)

lots of noise about "necessary secrecy" etc., the fact is US is a banana republic, albeit a fragmented one.
Greed is celebrated and cultivated from an early age, why is anyone surprised it leads to greedy people?

The choice for someone in whatever agency is to toil anonymously until death, with noone giving a flying fuck, or take the offer of directing funds to this or that company, in return for money and a life.

Linus' Other Gift to the World

Jeek Elemental Re:Um no. (177 comments)

Ill second this, I respect Linus as an engineer first and foremost. This is ofcourse extended to all of the kernel hackers.
Technical advice from any of these carries weight.

RMS I respect as a visionary with quite extraordinary consistency and patience, again extended to all GNUs.
He gets a lot of flak from short-sighted people for an uncompromising stance, this is unfair.
Its his role to be clear and firm, so that stuff moves in the right direction instead of stagnating in details.

They have overlapping spheres of influence, I think a large part of free softwares success is due to them both working at the same time.

Russian President: Time To Reform Copyright

Jeek Elemental Re:Copyright is main US industry, while not others (293 comments)

I love Russia, and I think this gesture is more important than the language suggests.
Russia is the first country to give the finger to US acta shakedown, which makes it easier for others to follow.
Its not "most of the rest of the world" that wants harsher ip crap, its the US and some spineless countries that do as they're told.

Ask Slashdot: Best Adventure Game To Start With?

Jeek Elemental Re:Neverwinter Nights, no one? (480 comments)

Ill second this. NWN has to be the best value game ever made, with enough graphics for younger players and depth as they grow.
I would stay far away from anything blizzard, its extremely cynical stuff hidden below a thin layer of glitzy graphics, the gaming equivalent of sugar bomb cereal.

Bubble Bursting On the MMO Market?

Jeek Elemental Re:Skinner Boxes (162 comments)

You are right ofcourse, I think calling the concept amoral is a little harsh tho. MMO running companies run the whole moral spectrum like everyone else.

HDMI Brands Don't Matter

Jeek Elemental about digital.. (399 comments)

Technically theres no such thing as a digital signal; look at it on an oscilloscope and its a far cry from the impossible squarewave used to represent them.
The receiver has to make a choice when to switch a 0 to a 1, with long slopes, noise and ringing this can cause problems even if its a "digital" signal.
Equipment today is good enough that its "never" a problem, signals get reclocked and cleaned up, crc etc.

So no, you shouldnt buy expensive hdmi cables, but you shouldnt mistake the abstract digital concept for its real, messy electrical representation either.

Porn Reportedly Found At Bin Laden Compound

Jeek Elemental Re:Too cynical? (537 comments)

I find the whole celebrating the execution of an old man in front of his family thing pretty distasteful.
Maybe the execution was necessary, the gloating is just sad.

BSA 2010 Piracy Report: $58.8 Billion

Jeek Elemental colonialism 2.0 (361 comments)

First round of colonies gave us resources and free labour to develop our societies and tech.
Second round, the colonies have moved to the IP world which is owned completely by the west due to the advantage from the first round.

While I dont think theres any point backdating morality, things were different during the first looting, theres no excuse for the 2. except might is right.

Assange Handed Sydney Peace Medal

Jeek Elemental Re:Sydney says: Me too! (199 comments)

The nobel peace prize committee is chosen by norwegian parliament but is otherwise independent.
I have no idea how Obama got it tho, maybe it was to show they have a sense of humour.

Id say Wikileaks, Assange and Manning would be worthy recipients.

Mainstream Media Looks At Anonymous

Jeek Elemental Re:a guess at the sony thing.. (118 comments)

there is a form of leadership etc. in irc channels, but I dont think that concerns the democratic aspect.
Its not mob mentality because whoever chooses to participate is anonymous to other participants aswell as the target.

Mainstream Media Looks At Anonymous

Jeek Elemental Re:a guess at the sony thing.. (118 comments)

Well, as I understand, the dos attacks are done by individuals targeting the LOIC program at the proposed target.
The strength of the attack then is directly proportional to the number of "votes" it gets.

Mainstream Media Looks At Anonymous

Jeek Elemental a guess at the sony thing.. (118 comments)

I dont think its right to say anonymous is not organized, it seems extremely democratic to me, especially the dos attacks.
If you suggest a course of action and it resonates then it is anonymous, if it gets no support then its just you.

Regarding sony I would wager what happened was during the anonymous dos attack someone peeked at the defenses and went holy crap its wide open,
and went back alone.
IE the initial anonymous attack probably did uncover the vulnerable network but the hack was not by anonymous.

Too old to game?

Jeek Elemental Jeek Elemental writes  |  about 7 years ago

Jeek Elemental (976426) writes "Ive been gaming for pretty much my whole life, starting on the venerable Vic-20. Other interests around computers have waxed and waned, though gaming has always had its hooks deeply embedded.
Lately, at 32 years old, I just cant seem to get into any games at all. Every one I try is a disappointment and quickly put away.
I should note I speak of straight-pc games, not them new-fangled Sousaphone-hero or what have you on the consoles. My all-time favorites would have to be UT2k4 and Neverwinter Nights, both online.

Am I just gamed-out? Are new games crap? Should I let Wii woo mee? When did you stop gaming and if you didnt what do you play?"

Retro "Picodore" DIY PDA

Jeek Elemental Jeek Elemental writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Jeek Elemental (976426) writes "Its alive! jtwinters on the http://jledger.proboards19.com/index.cgi PETSCII forums presents:

I had an old PSOne LCD screen lying around and I thought I'd make a C64 laptop. Actually, it's more like a C64 PDA! It measures 6.5 x 6 x 1.5 inches (15.5 x 16.5 x 4 cm) when closed. It can run from an AC wall adapter or 6 NiMH AA batteries. The keyboard is hacked from a portable folding keyboard for a Jornada PDA which outputs RS-232. I'm using a PIC 16F88 to decode the signals and re-encode them to PS/2 (that was an ordeal to figure out).

MediaDefender denies entrapment

Jeek Elemental Jeek Elemental writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Jeek Elemental (976426) writes "ArsTechnica reports on the Miivi.com site, MediaDefender says it was for internal testing only.
Apparently, they decided to take down the site and change the whois record to avoid hacker attacks and spam.
As expected, the MPAA says: "The Media Defender story is false. We have no relationship with that company at all."
Wonder what they were testing that required a spyware client and a registered domain...
