Thoughts From Readers on Replacing Google Reader

JimR The Old Reader (50 comments)

I tried a few different apps (Feedly, Vienna, RSS Feed Reader, Slick RSS) to replace Google Reader but didn't like any of them.

A couple of weeks ago I switched to The Old Reader [ ] and I've been perfectly happy with it since.

Google Chrome Getting Audio Indicators To Show You Noisy Tabs

JimR Better still... (155 comments)

Personally I'd like to have _all_ activity (audio, network, CPU, everything) stopped on every tab except the active one. If I want to be annoyed I can pop the tab into it's own window (or if someone cares to implement it - you could have per-tab controls).

Intel's Superchilled Test Rig

JimR Re:OS X Compile? (147 comments)

And FWIW compiling with:

g++-fsf-4.4 smallpt.cpp -o smallpt -O3 -fopenmp -ffast-math -m64 -march=native -ftree-parallelize-loops=8 -funroll-all-loops

gives a runtime for smallpt 100 of 2m31s for my MacBook ("Early 2008" model).

Intel's Superchilled Test Rig

JimR Re:OS X Compile? (147 comments)

One of the comments on the smallpt page recommends adding the following line:

if (depth > 100) return obj.e;

after line 55 in the code to prevent a stack overflow.

It seems to do the trick for me.

I am pretty sure I heard such a speech 10 years ago, before Java came out.

The first release of Java was in 1995.

Actually a 4GB MacBook Pro does show up as having 3.75GB of memory (in Activity Monitor) after being upgraded to Snow Leopard. Although I'm not really sure why.

Ridiculous Software Bug Workarounds?

JimR Re:Printer dependence of Word documents (655 comments)

This is pilot error not a ridiculous software bug.

If you wanted them to see the same pages as you why didn't you send the document in some sort of Portable Document Format?

The Guardian Shifts To Twitter After 188 Years of Ink

JimR 140 Character Limit (211 comments)

140 characters shouldn't be too much of a problem to get the nuances of an important news item across.

If they need more they can always use tweetdoubler.
