US School Installs 'Shooter Detection' System

Kanasta Re:Dumb idea ... Lots of assumptions .... (698 comments)

The big assumption is that incidents will occur and reoccur at the same school enough to make a 100k system worthwhile.
And that makes me sad.

Researchers At Brown University Shattered a Quantum Wave Function

Kanasta Re:umm.. what? (150 comments)

You can't get 2 kitties out of one. They cut Schrodinger's box in half, and pulled /half/ a dead kitty out of one and /half/ a live kitty out of the other.

Google's Driverless Cars Capable of Exceeding Speed Limit

Kanasta Re:Rolling roadblocks (475 comments)

In Australia, about 80% of people on the roads drive 10-20km/h UNDER the speed limit. They also block all the lanes and leave huge gaps in front at traffic lights - gaps where I could drive another small car into.
Police don't do anything about blockers, one even drove 10min right behind a car going 30km/h in a 60km/h one lane street. Then he put on his sirens. I thought he was going to do something, but as soon as the car pulled over he just drove on!

Windows 9 To Win Over Windows 7 Users, Disables Start Screen For Desktop

Kanasta Re:Why didn't they just listen to users? (681 comments)

Because the last time they listened to users we got MS Bob.
Users are stupid.

Microsoft Rumored To Integrate Android Apps

Kanasta Re:Security (189 comments)

Apple invented jailbreaking. The first thing most Apple fanboys do with their iPhone is to break out of the walled garden.
MS is probably dumb enough to try to wall in their few users.

Leak: Almost a Third of Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatches Are Being Returned

Kanasta Re:Maybe (365 comments)

I want to hear why you are allowed to open and use an item, then return it as new in the US.
Certainly can't do that any other country I"ve heard.

Watch a Lockheed Martin Laser Destroy a Missile In Flight

Kanasta Re:2 kilometers isn't very far away. (177 comments)

Given that usually missles you want to destroy are aimed AT you and not flying OVERHEAD, esp when just 2km away, I wonder how useful this system is.
Maybe we can ask our enemies to put them next to their launching pads?

Former Demonoid Members Receive Email Claiming Resurrection, Get Malware Instead

Kanasta Re:People still use common credentials? (62 comments)

Or better yet, a keepass that holds keys to other keepass databases. Seeded with fake logins.

World's Largest Biometric Database

Kanasta Re:12 billion finger prints? (117 comments)

This was covered before. IIRC every 6000 or so prints you'd get one match. Or some really low number.

More Malicious Apps Found On Google Play

Kanasta Re:Except (143 comments)

Does anyone send premium-rate SMSs on purpose anyway? They are never covered in any plan, and are always stupid things.
WHy not just ban them all?

Solar Power Is Booming — Why Do We Want To Kill It?

Kanasta Re:Chinese Subsidies (415 comments)

The US has always subsidized their own and tarriffed others without reason. They do so even with trading partners with whom they've signed free trade agreements.
The US doesn't need an excuse to impose tarriffs. They just need to tell you they've done so.

Camera Gun Would Let Hunters Get Killer Wildlife Shots

Kanasta Re:And just think... (263 comments)

Police are already frequently called out because "there's someone with a camera!" in public "acting suspicious" (taking photos). Do we really want to change those cameras to look like a rifle now?

Ask Slashdot: How To Get Non-Developers To Send Meaningful Bug Reports?

Kanasta Re:Make it send data to you (360 comments)

Sending descriptive and/or meaningful reports is not the issue. The problem is that in most outfits there is NO way for anyone to reach the devs. As a dev I have seen obvious out-by-1 errors, chat with 'support' and give detailed info, etc, but the idiot on the other end doesn't pass anything on, instead just filed it as 'unknown crash'.

And that's assuming you have a way to reach any support at all. Most 'contact' pages are actually 'search faq' pages, you get pointed to forums that require registration AND are admin/mod by volunteers AND no company reps ever read the forums.
In another If you spend 30min to file a report that checks you filled in every single field after finding the correct links, you just get a very long form email that if you read really carefully tells you a DIFFERENT link where you can file the report again. Sorry the stuff you typed last time was completely ignored/deleted.

Mozilla Firefox 6 Released Ahead of Schedule

Kanasta Re:Why not just wait for version 7? (415 comments)

So now I only have 2 plugins left not supported by FF4, should I upgrade to FF6? My bank also keeps saying FF4 is unsupported (only supports IE6+ and NS and FF3). Hmm, at this rate FF is going to lose users.

Military Drone Attacks Are Not 'Hostile'

Are they saying that any bomb dropped from any drone is not 'hostile', or merely that my bomb dropped from my drone is not 'hostile'?
