Apple Pays Couple $1.7m For 1 Acre Plot

I agree. I read all pages and am left wondering why this particular plot was so crucial. Poor journalism. "Apple needed it" is not specific enough. Why didnt they just buy a block in another direction?

Not at all. People who act professionally or who run business understand the meaning of "dont burn bridges." In this case, once the lawsuit is completed and all debts are settled everyone acts like adults and moves on.

For-Profit, Illegal Movie Download Sites Threaten MPAA

KharmaWidow Re:You people need to get off the DRM thread (387 comments)

Frankly, I don't care about your points because I don't care about DRM in regards to my initial comment, "Just a thought." I am annoyed by the whole DRM validity discussion. It's irrelevant to the the Slashdot post and my comment. Mention DRM to me and I just roll my eyes...

You don't have any digital Fair Use rights because digital content is not mentioned in the Fair Use ruling. Fair Use is thrown out in digital media cases. Circumventing DRM violates the usage contract you have with the media distributor and or copyright holder. When you buy a CD or DVD, you own the plastic - not the content.

"As long as purchasing media requires me to risk prison time in order to use said legitimately purchased media, I won't be buying."

Great. But that means you cannot pirate either.

Go back and read the Slashdot post, then read my comment. You are wasting your life arguing about something I did not say. I never said I like DRM, nor that DRM will end piracy.

Sheesh, if only you people could read comprehensively we could talk about today's Slashdot posts....

"Conclusion: The RIAA and MPAA are welcome to keep DRM if they wish." ...And the DRM will stay as long as you continue to pirate and circumvent DRM. That's the way of the 'Verse.

I did not imply that - you inferred that.

DRM is not the issue of this thread. ***Get that through your head!!!*** I, nor anyone else in this thread is advocating nor arguing for the use of DRM... Learn to read comprehensively.

KharmaWidow Re:Just a thought (387 comments)

You are joking right? FACT: Sony's Rootkit appeared in 2005. Sony announced it's intentions in 2000. One of the main reason Sony decided to go with DRM was due to the media piracy happening via Napster.

FACT: You are a self admitted pirate. ...Bragging about your crimes on the Internet - which the FBI scans... Good luck using your own brain.

KharmaWidow DRM isn't going to .... (387 comments)

I never said DRM will feed families and cloth children. You guys are incapable of reading comprehensively. The farce of your comment rated as "insightful" is a joke and evidence of the Kangaroo Court mentality of the piracy advocating Slashdot community. DRM exist because you pirate media via the Internet and for no other reason.

KharmaWidow You people need to get off the DRM thread (387 comments)

I don't need to explain how DRM reduces piracy because I never said DRM *would* reduce piracy. I said Cheap and DRM-free media is not going to happen if you guys keep pirating. Speaking out against DRM in this thread is idiocy.

Not one person who responded to my initial comment has admitted that pirating is illegal and wrong. Instead all of you have illogically attacked DRM as some kind of problem when it is a response to the problem of piracy. DRM is not the issue at hand and you clowns don't understand that.

Whether or not an individual is a pirate is irrelevant. As long as you, and the Slashdot community, continue to advocate pirating media you are essentially pirates, yourselves. You are part of the problem, not the solution. As long as the problem of piracy continues, those who create and distribute media will cling to DRM concepts. THus, you are the reason DRM exists.

All you guys are like a flock of geese "DRM, DRM, DRM, DRM, DRM, DRM, DRM..." You might as well be honking. DRM is irrelevent to the situation. It is the reaction not the problem.

If they did away with the DRM YOU WOULD KEEP PIRATING. Stop with the DRM smoke-screen. If you don't want to deal with DRM, stop pirating.

You can blame yourself for DRM. DRM wouldn't be an issue if you didn't pirate to begin with. DRM is not the problem, it is the response. And you continue to pirate and seek to defeat DRM rather than follow the law and compensate the manufaturer and distributor.

KharmaWidow Just a thought (387 comments)

You guys have to stop expecting free media! Sheesh. Have you ever watched a movie's entire credits? Its like a small city put that together. Cheap and DRM free is not going to happen if that small city is going to eat and dress their children. Media pirates are not Robin Hoods. Robin Hood only stole which was *wrongly* taken. All these people who make want is a liveable wage. Not eevry one involved is a mega star or executive.

The economy needs money to be exchanged, to flow. As long as you refuse to pay for the media you consume, the economy will suffer.

Utah Attorney General Tweets Execution Order

KharmaWidow Chiming in.... (556 comments)

My sister was brutally murdered and I knew from that point on that killing her killer would not make a difference to how I felt. How I still feel 20 years later... Still, bad deeds must be punished. I only wish her killer was killed by bashing his head in and strangling him like he did my sister. If we did that - kill the killer with the same method they used - it might become a deterrent again.

The main reason why capital punishment is not a deterrent is because we sugar-coat it. We put padded language around it. We get offended by a tweet reporting the go-ahead was made. And then we put them to sleep gently. All because our pussy-ass pacifist socialist education system brainwashes us into discarding any sense of honor, integrity, accountability and responsibility.

Executions should be announced with a media bullhorn and the country should stop everything else while its happening. No, we shouldn't broadcast the actual event. But we should acknowledge and witness when it occurs. We need to make our population instinctively aware that execution is a consequence - that there is a consequence for all our actions and transgressions against others.

2 In 3 Misunderstand Gas Mileage; Here's Why

KharmaWidow We purchase fuel by gallons, not miles. (1042 comments)

fuel/distance is useless for the driver. A driver says to himself when he is at the gas station, "My trip is x miles and my tank holds y gallons. How many gallons does it take to get to x?" ie mpg. x, the distance, is the constant - and desired goal. Not the available fuel.

No one gets in their car and says well, we can only go to Knotts Berry Farm because we don't have enough gas to get to Disneyland.

All you guys are doing is inverting the ratio and changing the units. Gallons versus liters is irrelevant because gal (u) = L is simply gal = (1/u)L

You have to understand the US ratio x distance per 1 fuel-unit. You guys are saying y fuel-units/100 distance. We literally say "more miles to the gallon" as a perfomance ratio. Its an encouraging statement.

Saying "less liters to the 100km" is psychologically depressing. Everyone wants "more", not "less."

How big would Billy Idol be if he sang, "In the midnight hour, I want less, less, less..."

2 In 3 Misunderstand Gas Mileage; Here's Why

KharmaWidow Re: The unit is linear, easy to understand!? (1042 comments)

How is mlpm easier to understand when auto efficiency and roads in the USA are measured in gallons and miles?

Wanna know a secret? MPG and miles are also linear!

"mlpm helps put the idea that gasoline is a great resource ... unlike 7-Eleven slurpees"
WTF? You think that if you sliced the unit to 1000th of a greater unit it makes it more sacred? LOL. Have you ever looked at the psychology of currency? The smaller the unit, the less people care about it. People throw pennies in the trash! I would wager that the opposite is true. If I had only 1 of something, I would treasure it more than 1000 littler somethings. I could afford to lose a few hundred of the littler somethings because if I round up I still have 1 something.

A slurpee is ~1/4 a gallon ... using your logic, we should measure fuel in "slurpees" because its a smaller unit!

YOUR ENTIRE ARGUMENT IS SUBJECTIVE to the units you are comfortable with. A liter is about 34 ounces (~1/4 gal) - or about 1 Big Gulp Slurpee and an extra sip! LOL. Europeans are already using the slurpee-unit!

If you want to make something sacred, make it expensive and harder to obtain. Like the diamond industry does. Oh, that's right they are ripping us off when it isn't necessary!

Regardless, the real solution to the perception problem in the post is to upgrade from a 10mpg car to a 50mpg car. Arguing that the 10-20 path saves more will only encourage people to drive 20mpg cars rather than 50 mpg cars.

These upgrade paths measure % improvement, not actual savings. A 33mpg saves more than the 20mpg car - without upgrading at all!
