War Texting Lets Hackers Unlock Car Doors Via SMS

Kirin Fenrir Re:Predicted by Star Trek (128 comments)

I hate myself for remembering this, but they actually stole a truck, and a pretty modern one. So it is reasonable.

Facebook More Hated Than Banks, Utilities

Kirin Fenrir Where is the customer principles today? (332 comments)

And yet millions of people still use it. Nothing is ever going to change, no matter how much they are despised, until consumers stand up for their rights by not using the service or product that offends them!

US Supreme Court: Video Games Qualify For First Amendment

Kirin Fenrir Well, at least that's consistancy. (458 comments)

Amidst all the bending over backwards to let corporations do whatever they want under the reasoning of Free Speech, it's nice to at least see the Supreme Court being consistent in their application of the First Amendment.

Why Classic Video Game Revamps Must Disappoint

Kirin Fenrir Re:WoW sucks. (129 comments)

Not to sound like an advert, but you might wan to look at Guild Wars 2:

- No "holy trinity", dedicated tanks and healers forcibly removed to focus on tactics rather than roles.
- No WoW-style quests, entire overworld is dynamic events that have different outcomes in the persistent world based on if you succeed or fail.
-Buy to play, with no monthly fee.

Doctor Who's Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) Dies at 63

Kirin Fenrir Re:Elizabeth Sladen (132 comments)

Way too young. However, either the wikipedia article or all the news stories are wrong. If she was born in '46, she was 65.

mark

They could both be right. She was friends with a time traveler, after all. :)

Which Comic Character Is the Greatest Engineer?

Kirin Fenrir Titan A.E. (316 comments)

Gune should get an honorable mention:

"Does this look familiar? Do you know what it is? Neither do I. I made it last night in my sleep. Apparently I used Gindrogac. Highly unstable. I put a button on it. Yes. I wish to press it, but I'm not sure what will happen if I do..."

Guild Wars 2 Devs Aiming For the Top

Kirin Fenrir Misconceptions (150 comments)

Guild wars 2 is NOT a PVP-based MMO. The majority of the content is PvE. There is no ganking or open-world PvP, all PvP is in seperate PVP-only areas.

Guilds Wars 2 is a western MMO from a WESTERN developer. I'm not sure why everyone thinks it's an asian MMO. GW1 was most popular in Europe and the US.

EA Says Game Development Budgets Have Peaked

Kirin Fenrir Re:APB, Fallen Earth... (157 comments)

Uh, FFXIV is absolutely coming to PS3. Confirmed for March 2011. Remember, this is the sequel to a game that was already on PC and console (FFXI).

Besides, anyone in beta (NDA lifted) can testify that it's designed around a controller, not a mouse. :(

Child Porn As a Weapon

Kirin Fenrir How easy? (774 comments)

EXTREMELY easy. I'm surprised it hasn't started happening frequently already. As much as we (as a society) demonize people for even being suspected of this crime, I'd hesitantly say it does happen frequently already.

It would not be easily discovered as everyone in the chain of justice is quick to assume the defendants are guilty, and may not do as thorough a job as they should looking for evidence of a setup. Easier to parade around your captured "predator" and get good press, then to search for the truth.

I've seen it firsthand; an old buddy of mine admitted one day that when he was 19, he got drunk at a party and slept with a girl who lied about her age by a single year. She was 17, not 18, which is under the legal age in my state. Today, he is a registered sex offender, cannot vote, has trouble finding work, and cannot live in most communities. He has to inform the communities he is allowed to live in, which makes everyone immediately assume he's some kind of monster after their children.

Was my friend kind of an idiot at 19? Absolutely. But does he deserve to become a lower class of society for the rest of his life over his (ultimately harmless) mistake?

Apple Is Nintendo's "Enemy of the Future"

Kirin Fenrir A industry designed to fail.. (272 comments)

Gee, with shorter games, dumbed-down games, yearly franchise releases over-saturating brands, less focus on bug-free releases, a dramatic rise in nickel-and-diming DLC, exploding budgets, and a general fear of innovation or creativity, I wonder why the video game industry is starting to slump?

The only game on the horizon I'm really looking forward to is Guild Wars 2.

Russian Officials To Investigate Regional President's Alien Abduction Claims

Kirin Fenrir "Regional President"? (184 comments)

You'd think if a alien species could travel millions of billions of miles at (presumably) FTL speeds, they'd at least have the foresight to abduct someone important to interview.

Microsoft Wanted Seperate Servers for FFXIV on 360

Kirin Fenrir Kirin Fenrir writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Kirin Fenrir (1001780) writes "Ever wondered why MMOs seem to never appear on consoles? Part of the reason for this seems to now be clear, thanks to FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka: "The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system. [Live is] different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice. Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to... We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live."

Combined with the PS3 version delayed due to issues with it's 256mb of system RAM, it's no wonder MMO developers seem to consider consoles more trouble than they're worth."
