Internet Responds To Racist Article, Gets Author Fired

Laser Lou Re:Holy fuck (1208 comments)

it seems to be largely the social norm that the word is OK to use if you're black, and offensive if you're not. That's a bullshit standard, and it bothers me. Either it's OK for everyone, or it's OK for no one.

It is really a matter of context. It would not make sense to call someone that word when they could not call you that same word too. If you are content to be called that word in a group, then it would be ok.

Tennessee Passes Bill That Allows "Teaching the Controversy" of Evolution

Laser Lou Re:Simple solution... (1108 comments)

You have rejected answers here that seem quite reasonable to me, so you have your own criteria. Let's spin it around; can you personally imagine or propose falsifiable hypotheses for global warming? You don't have to give an answer for that here; its just a personal exercise.

Tennessee Passes Bill That Allows "Teaching the Controversy" of Evolution

Laser Lou Re:Simple solution... (1108 comments)

Here is another way of looking at this: you are on the side of modern science when it comes to Evolution and Astronomy. Now, what is it about Global Warming that is different than those other two? Is it that you do not really understand it yet?

Tennessee Passes Bill That Allows "Teaching the Controversy" of Evolution

Laser Lou Re:Simple solution... (1108 comments)

Doesn't natural climate change occur slowly, over thousands of years? Are you aware that the recent climate change pattern for the 20th century is much different that the historical changes? I encourage you to study this deeper, for your own benefit. It takes some skill to interpret scientific data while filtering out noise...to see the forest from the trees.

Tennessee Passes Bill That Allows "Teaching the Controversy" of Evolution

Laser Lou Re:Simple solution... (1108 comments)

Oh, and FWIW, Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming *doesn't* qualify, unless of course some brave soul would like to make a clear falsifiable hypothesis statement for it :)

Rising temperatures are not falsifiable? Hmm..

Ask Slashdot: Copy Protection Advice For ~$10k Software?

Laser Lou Improve access (635 comments)

Can your potential customers easily get in contact with your support staff before the sale? Once they get in contact with live human beings, the piracy rate should drop.

NASA Wants Spacecraft For Mars Return Trip

Laser Lou Re:One Way (193 comments)

Well, we can better analyze the samples they collect back on earth. Also, travelling the Mars will be hard on the astronauts, and the experience they gain would be invaluable for future missions.

CentOS Project Administrator Goes AWOL

Laser Lou UPDATE - Lance showed up (492 comments)

From the Centos.org home page:

Note: The CentOS Development team had a normal meeting today and Lance Davis was in attendance. In the meeting a majority of issues were resolved right away and a working agreement was reached with deadlines for any unresolved issues. There should be no impact to any CentOS users moving forward.

The CentOS project is now in control of the CentOS,org and CentOS.info domains and owns all trademarks, materials and artwork in the CentOS distributions.

We look forward to working with Lance quickly to complete all the agreed upon issues.

More information should follow very early next week.

Study Finds the Pious Fight Death Hardest

Laser Lou Come home with your shield, or on it. (921 comments)

The pious tend to view this world as a battlefield, not a vacation spot.
They are here to die fighting, much like the Spartans. Refusing treatment is seen as quitting; what kind of soldier lies down to die, who has a chance to take some of the enemy beforehand?
