Web of Tax Shelters Saved Apple Billions, Inquiry Finds
I'm hoping someone with some econ knowledge can enlighten me, although I fear since this is the Internet and Slashdot comments it's probably not going to happen ;-) I've never heard of a situation where companies tried to pay taxes because they like them and if they're publicly traded they had a fiduciary responsibility to avoid them in order to maximize returns to the shareholders, and when forced to pay them they just try to find ways to force the cost down to the customer.
So why do we bother at all? Personally, I'd rather pay higher property/income taxes and abandon corporate taxes so that money comes back into the country for reinvestment and so that the companies don't leave the country and expand their business elsewhere.
Bill Gates: iPad Users Are Frustrated They Can't Type Or Create Documents
I 100% agree with him. I can't type /at all/ on my iPad 2. Because I'm not the disciplined type that raises their fingers 100% before hitting the next key I find the iPad trippng up a lot. It also doesn't keep up when I'm typing quickly and I'm not patient enough to slow down to wait for it. I've even tried two third party keyboards and wasn't impressed with them (1 because it was small and travel sized, the other is that new fangled overlay .. I can't remember the name but I was a part of the kickstarter). Anyway, when it comes to typing anything of substance I always put down the iPad and go to my desktop computer.
In the end my iPad 2 has become the samething my X-Box has become, a bad, over-priced Netflix player.
Call for Questions: Rasterman, Founder of the Enlightenment Project
but my calendar doesn't say the April 1 yet, what gives?
In all seriousness, you've been working on e17 since you were what? 25? How did you go from "I want to make a window manager" to "Everyone is doing this horribly wrong and I'm tired of being everyone" at that age?
Facebook Adds Two-Factor Authentication
Worth noting - when you supply a phone number (btw, my Google Voice number didn't work at all for this.. had to use my actual mobile #).. they immediately publish it on your profile.
Thanks Facebook! (i immediately removed it and disabled the feature)
Officials Use Google Earth To Find Unlicensed Pools
I would assume it's less about being "licensed" and more about meeting code and having your plans approved by the city council and having your house reappraised to accommodate the increase in value (and thus increase in taxes).
Officials Use Google Earth To Find Unlicensed Pools
busy filling out the paperwork to get your (already built) pool approved by the city council?
First 'Malaria-Proof' Mosquito Created
You should believe it.. It's the main reason family sizes have shrunk in modern civilization - the need to have many children to do these activities has diminished, thus the need to have many children has diminished.
It might seem bad, or not politically correct, to think this way but if you look at family sizes over the last 1000 years in first world nations you will see the trend.
Google To Challenge Facebook Again
It's not about Google teaming up with Facebook. It's about Google trying to replcae Facebook and all your base belong to them.
Apple's "iPad" Out In the Open
Serious question - does it do phone calls? I saw microphone and speaker listed as features, but I saw nothing about voice calls.
Is Programming a Lucrative Profession?
That they are essentially mechanics? They're just not auto mechanics, they're more or less computer or software mechanics?
That shouldn't be a surprise to any. Especially as we see more about self-fixing computers, the furthering of object oriented programming which is leading to simpler and simpler APIs so you don't even have to be a programmer to make things happen. Or technologies like Sharepoint where you don't even have to have a GED to prop up multiple sites / data sources, etc.
Dad Builds 700 Pound Cannon for Son's Birthday
and I could be mistaken, but back then the word "state" really meant nation, and thus WV formed its own nation and remained a part of the United States (nations) of America. The word 'state' has changed greatly in the last 200 years.
Real-World Consequences of Social Networking Posts
I think what y'all are missing is the comment that followed where she said "racial profile does exist and for good reason, just look at the prison population," or something to that effect. Implying racial profiling is ok because blacks are obviously the majority of criminals because they make up the majority of inmates.
Swedish Court Says IP Numbers Privacy Protected
So are they now illegal in Sweden?
Sarah Connor Chronicles — Why It Died
I'm not sure why this got marked as 'troll'. He's absolutely right. I love me some sci fi TV, but this show was best watched in Fast Forward on my DVR.
It wasn't complex. It wasn't meditative. It wasn't non-populist either. It was crappy, though.
Just because something has a shoddy storyline that barely pieces together doesn't mean that it's complex or meditative.
Why Power Failures Can Always Lead To Data Loss
At my company's NOC the UPS failed... so everything failed, except the fancy new generator they had just installed.
Big problem though: when the UPS totally crapped itself, power from the generator couldn't get through the UPS to any of the devices plugged into it. Whoops.
