DoD Takes Criticism From Security Experts On Cyberwar Incident

Lord_Frederick Re:easily defeated, only if you disable the vector (116 comments)

DoD is very big, and there are hundreds of thousands of DoD computers that don't follow the simplest security best practices. Just because the NSA publishes a document on how a Windows box should be configured, doesn't mean it gets configured that way in the field. Military IT is just like social issues; The only area not being neglected and starved of resources is the last area to have a major shitstorm.

The Joke Known As 3D TV

Lord_Frederick Another short-lived gimmick (594 comments)

This latest crop of 2D-to-3D technology is best used in 5-minute amusement park rides, where all the other 3D tech belongs. At best, it provides a few cool moments during the action scenes. At worst, you have a headache after too many blurry shapes try to trick your brain into seeing depth that isn't there and have to stop watching.

Good Database Design Books?

Lord_Frederick Re:Somewhere, a coder is polishing his resume (291 comments)

Our CIO has a programming background and once fixed some database code we were having problems with. This is a 10,000 person organization with an IT staff of around 300. It's not hard to imagine a small company where the IT director takes on some programming tasks.

US Fed Gov. Says All Music Downloads Are Theft

Lord_Frederick Re:If you're downloading music at work... (451 comments)

The environment varies considerably depending on what agency or department you work for. Many people work for the government because they can be involved with projects that just don't exist in the private sector.

Shrinking Budgets Tie Hands of Security Pros

Lord_Frederick Re:Can't budget for human stupidity (63 comments)

I don't think implementing a few basic security practices are going to cause idea stagnation, yet best practices are constantly shot down in favor of sexy monitoring software. I guess it makes sense for a manager. What you would rather put on your resume?

"Implemented 2 million dollar intrusion detection and anti-malware enterprise software solution with staff of security engineers monitoring network traffic 24/7"
OR
"Took the damn users out of the local administrators group."

Shrinking Budgets Tie Hands of Security Pros

Lord_Frederick Re:Can't budget for human stupidity (63 comments)

If the grandparent's organization is anything like mine, the issue isn't the lack of technical solutions for locking down computers. It's the unwillingness of managers to put their neck on the line and sign off on suggestions like this.

Judge Reviewing Pirate Bay Trial Bias Is Removed

Lord_Frederick Re:Why does Slashdot constantly side with PirateBa (329 comments)

Some activities that are considered wrong in some cultures are perfectly fine in others. What's wrong is for huge powerful cultures to pressure everyone else to adopt their moral code.

College Threatens Students Over Email Addresses

Lord_Frederick Re:Greed is Good (452 comments)

The degree of a burn refers to how deep the burn is. If the burns affected the full thickness of the dermis and underlying tissue, then they would be considered third degree despite the lack of charring.

Louisiana Rep. Preps State Bill Banning Human-Animal Hybrids

Lord_Frederick Zoophilia? (422 comments)

If you had sex with a human-animal hybrid, could you be prosecuted for bestiality? Of course *I* wouldn't have sex with a hybrid. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I think.

Why IT Won't Power Down PCs

Lord_Frederick Re:Remote Access ... (576 comments)

Using laptops may be a very possible solution that is quickly dismissed by management because it is perceived as being too expensive. We have had a long policy of "no laptops...they're too expensive compared to desktops." Then we put two or three desktops in different locations for users that travel. /boggle

Why IT Won't Power Down PCs

Lord_Frederick Re:Remote Access ... (576 comments)

This may be a shock, but some IT managers don't have a clue. We have around 10k desktops and users store their files locally. Our users connect to a terminal server, then start another RDP session to connect to their desktop.

New CyberSecurity Bill Raises Privacy Questions

Lord_Frederick Re:LMAO @ "Liberal Fascists" (319 comments)

Do you even read what you post? From your own wikipedia link: "Historians do not place all fascists in the same position on the political spectrum - groups have been placed "left, right and center," or not even in the spectrum at all."

How Do You Justify the Existence of IT?

Lord_Frederick Re:Writing your own eulogy (411 comments)

Exactly. If you are just doing generic IT stuff, then a small company may very well be better off with some sort of maintenance agreement instead of keeping you. Your boss has already realized this and is probably already soliciting bids. Sorry.

Caffeine myths debunked

Lord_Frederick Lord_Frederick writes  |  more than 6 years ago

Lord_Frederick (642312) writes "The New York Times has a story about caffeine misconceptions. 'It was long thought that caffeinated beverages were diuretics, but studies reviewed last year found that people who consumed drinks with up to 550 milligrams of caffeine produced no more urine than when drinking fluids free of caffeine.' I guess caffeine is being moved out of the bad-for-you column."
