A Year of Linux Desktop At Westcliff High School

Lulfas Re:I understand, it is Very hard to leave Windows (283 comments)

Getting used to Win 7 is a little tough at first, but after you make the transition, it is amazing how much nicer it is to work with than XP. The single most obvious user facing thing is drivers. You plug something in, it works. No user interaction required at all.

The Story Behind Australia's CSIRO Wi-Fi Claims

Lulfas Re:Ars Scrapes the bottom of the barrel (161 comments)

Was this an obvious invention/solution? No That is part of where the question comes in. All the tech used was already invented and known about. Of the three key pieces, OFDM was in papers from the 50s, interleaving in the 60s, and forward error correction in the late 60s. There was even a modem made on these principles sold to the US military 20 years earlier.

A Memory of Light To Be Released January 8, 2013

Lulfas Re:Doorstops (228 comments)

There's a line after Richard gets free of the old world where I finally had to put the book down. It's something like "It isn't charity to fix something you might use only once, even if other people use it. That's just enlightened self-interest!"

Battle Escalates Between Airlines and Online Agents

Lulfas Re:Try your brick and motar travel agent (279 comments)

In reference to airline tickets, there really isn't any commission to talk about, for travel agents anyways. The thing with them is the extras; hotel rooms, cruises, all-inclusives, etc. It is a matter of building a relationship with you. Usually if a travel agent is finding a cheaper deal on an airline ticket it is using an odd fare class. Source: Grandmother owns a travel agency.

Do You Really Need a Discrete Sound Card?

You're the same kind of person who swears by the $700 dollar speaker cables, then in a blind test thinks the coathanger sounds the best.

Best IT-infrastructure For a Small Company?

Lulfas NGO status (600 comments)

I think Microsoft still gives a bunch of free licenses for NGOs for Windows and maybe Office. Consider looking into it, as it will help you avoid a training budget.

Blizzard Rolls Out Real ID Privacy Options

Lulfas Re:Dear Blizzard... (145 comments)

You're entirely correct, but the Facebook reference isn't a good one for the simple reason that the Blizzard Real ID is pretty clearly marked and turning the whole thing off it is literally a single radio button. As compared to Facebook's labyrinth of menus to go through to figure it out.

You can turn it off 100% now with this change. Go to the same page the article mentions to change the settings and you can just turn it off.

Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04

Lulfas Re:Derp derp (702 comments)

Not blaming the OS at all. However, it is a reality and a fact. It is should that should be considered when choosing an OS. How often do we hear here on Slashdot "Well, I'd use Linux, but I play games and don't want to dual boot"

Windows 7 vs. Ubuntu 10.04

Lulfas Derp derp (702 comments)

I love how they have a category for Entertainment and Bundled Apps, refuse to mention actual games and only focus on things that Microsoft would be sued for putting into their OS.

Tensions Rise Between Gamers and Game Companies Over DRM

Lulfas Re:Is he bloody stupid? (447 comments)

California Penal Code 484 defines theft, in part, as taking another person's labor fraudulently. He did not pay the game company for their labor.

A concealed permit is for carrying a concealed weapon. If whatever country/state he is in does not allow people to carry loaded weapons openly, he's committed a crime and will be losing his CCW.

Steam DRM

Lulfas Lulfas writes  |  more than 4 years ago

Lulfas (1140109) writes "Steam is implementing a new DRM solution that, according to them, removes all DRM. Called Computer Executable Generation (CEG), this system creates a unique copy of the game when it is purchased through Steam, essentially using a 100% unique keygen system. It will be installable on any system, but only able to played by 1 person at a time (hooked into the correct Steam account, of course). Would this be enough to satisfy you while at the same time giving the publishing companies what they require? (Note, this is a GDC release. Don't think there is a real link yet. This is the only one I see.) http://kotaku.com/5182197/new-steamworks-feature-makes-drm-obsolete"

Worlds.com sues NCSoft over MMO-Patent

Lulfas Lulfas writes  |  more than 5 years ago

Lulfas (1140109) writes "Worlds.com today sued NCSoft over a patent filed in 2000 (granted this February) over its patent on scalable virtual world (can be found http://www.google.com/patents?id=wv5-AAAAEBAJ&dq=7,181,690). This is a very broad base patent, and there is no reason to expect they will only sue NCSoft, when they should be able to use the same patent against other companies. Should something like this be patentable and enforceable so long after the fact? Article is here: http://www.virtualworldsnews.com/2008/12/worldscom-files-suit-against-ncsoft.html"
