Silk Road's Ross Ulbricht's Next Court Date Set For November

M. Baranczak Re:Explain why comments are broken (77 comments)

The missing features wouldn't be a big deal if this was an early preview, but they were actually planning to take this thing live.

And if the wide margins are such an easy fix, then why haven't they fixed it? People have been complaining about this since the beta came out 5 months ago. And I don't mean just posting random comments about how it sucks - a lot of us actually took the time to give specific feedback, but this feedback was completely ignored.

Yeah, I miss GNAA too. Their website was much better designed than the Slashdot Beta.

Quarks Know Their Left From Their Right

M. Baranczak Re:We are not an audience (150 comments)

Stack Exchange should just go ahead and write a Slashdot replacement, I'd be over there in a second. Unlike the trained chimps at Dice, they know how to do web design, they understand the concept of a site driven by user content, and they don't have contempt for their users.

iWatch Prototypes Could Be Ready, Apple Hires Fitness Physiologists For Tests

M. Baranczak Re:They've responded! (100 comments)

It's a small step in the right direction. But they've mishandled this thing so badly that it'll take more than one vaguely worded post to quiet people down.

iWatch Prototypes Could Be Ready, Apple Hires Fitness Physiologists For Tests

M. Baranczak Re:We Are Not Your Audience (100 comments)

And this is what I still don't understand: Why? What was the motivation for the redesign? What problems was it supposed to solve? (And if the answer is 'to better serve ads', then you might as well tell us, because we'll find out anyway.)

Slashdot Tries Something New; Audience Responds!

M. Baranczak Re:And also (2219 comments)

I don't mean to defend fuckups, but healthcare.gov was a hugely complicated project. It had to connect millions of users with thousands of insurance companies, and it was all designed from scratch. Plus the specs were coming from the government, which meant that revising them was almost impossible.

On the flip side, Dice took a perfectly functional message board, and managed to turn it to shit.

Slashdot BETA Discussion

M. Baranczak Re:Spamming Fuck Beta in every unrelated topic is (60 comments)

Maybe, instead of spamming "fuck beta" everywhere like a spoilt child you should actually post something constructive.

Maybe you missed it, but we already tried that and they ignored us. Looks like screaming and throwing feces is the only option left. And if that doesn't work, we'll just leave.

I won't flame you for liking the new design, but you should realize that almost everybody disagrees with you. It's not that I don't want any change - I think there are problems with the old design, but the new one doesn't fix any of those problems, just adds about 100 new problems.

Fracking Is Draining Water From Areas In US Suffering Major Shortages

M. Baranczak Re:About beta. (268 comments)

Can we stop it with the childish off-topic rants? They have a feedback form, if you have a problem with the new design, I suggest you use it. There's a proper time and place for everything.

No, just kidding. Fuck the beta.

NASA Pondering Two Public Contests To Build Small Space Exploration Satellites

M. Baranczak Re:amusing trend in stories suddenly (127 comments)

Yes, the trend is quite clear. Let's stay on it and see where it takes us. Who knows, by this time tomorrow, the editors might have explained the nature of dark matter, invented a better electric car battery, and brought back "Farscape". Either that, or their heads will have exploded. I see it as a win-win situation.

HTML5 App For Panasonic TVs Rejected - JQuery Is a "Hack"

M. Baranczak Re:Ah, yes... but... FUCK BETA! (573 comments)

Hell no, we knew that for several months. What we learned today is that they're planning to promote the beta despite several months of people telling them it sucks. This is what annoys me even more than the bad design - they actually solicited our feedback, and we took the time to give it, then they completely ignored it.

Designer Seeds Thought To Be Latest Target By Chinese

M. Baranczak Re:Beta sucks! (164 comments)

Every comment I've seen on the new design is negative. Every single one... that just never happens, it's mind blowing. There should be a few people taking the opposite side, just for the sake of taking the opposite side, but this thing is so wretched that nobody wants to defend it, not even anonymously. Is this part of some shady corporate ploy to destroy Slashdot, sell off the ping-pong tables and take a tax write-off? Or are the new managers just not very bright?

Lawmakers Threaten Legal Basis of NSA Surveillance

M. Baranczak Re:Empty threat (206 comments)

The Republican bloc is unlikely to do anything that would curb military or intelligence related activities.

Unless there's a Democrat running those intelligence related activities. Then there's actually a good chance.

Reminds me of that time when Slashdot hired a gang of meth-addled rhesus monkeys to redesign their site.

Update on the March of Progress: How Slashdot's New Look Is Shaping Up

M. Baranczak "Your feedback is very valuable to us"?? (237 comments)

The feedback has been unanimously negative, and they've been ignoring it so far. I could take the time to explain all the problems in detail, but there's no point, so I'll just give the executive summary: IT SUCKS.

How Voter Shortsightedness Skews Elections

M. Baranczak Re:Not quite that (269 comments)

Any economist making a chart like that would factor in inflation, which is basically the same thing as you're talking about. But the bigger problem is: "average earnings" is a meaningless number, since you're not dealing with a homogenous group. If Bill Gates gets a 50% pay raise, and 100 janitors get a 50% pay cut, then the average national income will rise. Understanding these things takes only basic math skills, but a lot of voters lack these skills, and the journalists can't be bothered to explain.
