Why You Should Worry About the Future of Chromebooks

Mantorp Re:Chromebooks have their niche. And it's a big on (216 comments)

I'm older than dirt and I am fully aware of what the Chromebooks can and cannot do. For me it was the perfect fit for a kitchen laptop for online radio, spotify, youtube and recipe browsing. $199 and easy enough for my kids to use.

How hard is it to build a PC from a kit?

Mantorp Re:Not hard (6 comments)

Thanks, I only meant to submit this in my journal but screwed up the submission. Anyway, on NewEgg I mean the DIY PC Combos http://www.newegg.com/Store/MasterComboStore.aspx?StoreID=7&name=DIY-PC-Combos and on TigerDirect the Barebones kits http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_tlc.asp?CatId=31&name=Barebone-Kits&cm_sp=Masthead-_-Computer%20Parts-_-Spot%2002 It looks as if the prices are about half of what the same would cost all assembled RAM included (in the $250-$300 range for the ones above).

Charging Assange with a bogus crime doesn't do anything except get Wikileaks more press. Unless you're implying that there might be a few hard hitting "enforcers" greeting Assange in jail.

My FF has the same problem and so does Chrome, it (flash video w sound) works in Arora and Epiphany but those browsers don't have as many extensions and plugins. Just started playing with Opera 10.10 today and that is getting sluggish and memory hoggish too if I leave it running for a few hours.

Google Voice Apps Arrive For Android and Blackberry

Mantorp Re:Unlimited Calling (106 comments)

for the few people I dial internationally fairly frequently I added them as GV - Bob for example then put the number as my GV number followed by a p for pause then my pin and another p then 2, then another p then the number and pound sign.
like this:
555-555-5555p1111p2p011445555555555#
It dials the whole thing automatically

How hard is it to build a PC from a kit?

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 3 years ago

Mantorp writes "My ancient (6 or 7 yr old) PC finally died and I think it's the powersupply or motherboard or whatever, it just shuts down as soon as push the powerbutton. Anyway, it's an old single core machine and I think I deserve a new slightly faster machine. I don't want to spend more than $2-300 and it seems I can get significantly more bang for the buck by getting a kit rather than a ready made PC. But, how hard is it to assemble one of these from TigerDirect or NewEgg? My level of expertise is limited to having popped in more ram, installed a video card with a TV tuner, and replaced failed hard drives. If it's much much harder than that I'll probably screw it up."

I got a Wii

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 7 years ago And all I've been fiddling with is the best way to get my music and movies setup to play on the Wii rather than the actual games. So far I've tried Weezo and Orb. Weezo's pages get all screwed up but Orb is choppy and keeps buffering, it also eats up a lot of CPU. Thinking of sticking it in a separate VM or get a cheapo dedicated PC for it.

Anyone got any good flashgames for the wii?

am I infected?

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 7 years ago Pretty frequently when my PC is running slowly and laggish my Task Manager will tell me that Internet Explorer is taking up 98-99% of the CPU while using about 70MB of RAM. However, no IE will be visible on screen. It's like it's running in stealth mode doing its own thing.

It's got XP sp2 with all the latest patches. Since I'm a cheapskate I use the AVG free edition for antivirus and Windows Defender or whatever M$'s spyware protection is called. They both tell me daily nothing is wrong.

Any ideas? Thanks

How to avoid being murdered

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 7 years ago Go to Jail Go directly to jail.

...In 2005, 56 prisoners were murdered. There are roughly 2 million inmates held in state prisons, meaning that the homicide rate per 100,000 prisoners last year was only 2.8. That number is less than half the rate of New York City (6.6 per 100,000) and an order of magnitude lower than Baltimore (42 per 100,000). Indeed, of the 66 largest cities in the United States, only El Paso, Tex. and Honolulu, Hawaii have lower homicide rates than the state prisons...

Galaxy vs DC United at the Home Depot Center

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 7 years ago

Great arena, expensive parking and beer, not so great crowd. Plenty of empty seats, at kickoff it was almost half empty. With all the hype and sellouts everywhere else I was surprised that the upper deck didn't even have to be used. The official attendance was about 17k, not terrible for soccer in the US but about 10k short of capacity.

Got to see some firsts, Beckham's first start with the Galaxy, first game as captain, first yellow card, first goal, and first assist. I also got my first glimpse of Posh but the bodyguards intimidated me into not taking pictures, I'm a failure as a paparazzo.

Great come from behind win against Mexico at a heavily away team favoring Soldier Field. USA just has their number anytime they play away from the Azteca.
Too bad they can't send a top squad to Venezuela. I wonder how may US fans make that trip?

Strange Dream

Mantorp Mantorp writes  |  more than 7 years ago

So, for some reason we were moving to Paris, an apartment overlooking a big square with lots of people. My oldest daughter immediately runs outside and starts climbing on the walls of the building next door spiderman style freaking out my wife. I remember wondering if those immigrant riots took part in this part of Paris last year, but we had already decided on the apartment. I had to go back to the US for something and when I was at the airport to fly back to France, I didn't get a boarding pass because they mispronounced my name so badly I didn't know they were calling me. Then when I belatedly go to get a boarding pass, something has happened to my lips, they're huge and hurt and I can barely talk, on top of that I look like those Mexican wolf people, the ones with a faulty gene that makes hair grow on their faces. So I had hair all over my face and my mouth was enormous. Since I didn't look anything like my passport picture they didn't give me a boardingpass. Then I woke up. Weird huh?
