Scientists Have Developed a Material So Dark That You Can't See It

MarkTina I wonder how safe it is ? (238 comments)

I get the feeling that if you were to brush those little tubes off of the surface they were grown on they'd make asbestos seem like candy floss in comparison!

Why Did New Zealand's Moas Go Extinct?

MarkTina Probably because they were big and meaty (180 comments)

and tasty!

I'm glad they are gone, as the Haast's Eagle would still be here if they were around ... and I'm not keen on walking about while a bird of prey with a 3 meter wingspan looked down on me as a snack!

Ask Slashdot: Practical Bitrot Detection For Backups?

MarkTina Re:Excellent question (321 comments)

What's the point in joining in ? To me it's obvious you have no clue about data storage and magnetic media in general, so no matter what I say you won't agree, I only chipped in earlier because I thought your statement was so funny!

Ask Slashdot: Practical Bitrot Detection For Backups?

MarkTina Re:Excellent question (321 comments)

Bitrot is a myth in modern times. Floppies and cheap-ass tape drives from the 90s had this problem, but anything reasonably modern (GMR) will read what you wrote until mechanical failure.

Well fingers crossed you are not the storage admin for anyone I deal with!

Ask Slashdot: Practical Bitrot Detection For Backups?

MarkTina Re:BTRFS filesystem (321 comments)

RAID10 and similar systems are two RAID5 systems which are independent and regularly compare data; These can detect which system is inconsistent, so you will always have at least one copy of your data in a consistent state.

You were doing quite well up until you said that sentance .....

Oooh I remember that stuff in school! Fecking awful! It just moved "stuff" about on your arse, you'd have more luck (and fun) wiping clean by dragging your bum across the floor!

Ahhh .. you must be one of those "poor people" I hear so much about ? ;-)

But then you could always make use of the power saving functions computers have had for the past 15 years or so :-)

Would You Put a Tracking Device On Your Child?

MarkTina Yes, because they are my property! (610 comments)

I've twin 4 year old boys and I'd stick a tracker to them if I could!

Bollocks to the politically correct brigade! Until they are 16 they are my property and I'm responsible for anything they do. So I'd want to be able to find them if I needed to ... and being boys, and twins, and 4 .. they have the attention span of a knat and zoom around like hamsters on crack! Keeping dibs on them in busy places is a full time job :-)

Classic Nintendo Games Are NP-Hard

MarkTina What a complete waste of money and resources! (204 comments)

Seriously people get paid to do the "research" on this ? There are countless diseases and other problems in the world and someone gets the new crop of university brainiacs working out how hard an f'ing computer game is ?
Well that'll be such a help to civilization!

Designer Creates "Euthanasia Roller Coaster"

MarkTina Re:I've seen people die... (409 comments)

So what is your alternative then ?

I'm sure there are thousands of people world wide who would love to be able to flick a switch and just turn themselves off to escape the misery of they are in!

If you were given a choice to be stuck in a bed, being fed cocktails of drugs to keep your failing body clinging to life, all the while your family and friends get to experience watching you decay, wouldn't you want a way out ? Not just to relieve your trauma but to let your family get their lives straightened out as well ?

Or are you the sort of person who thinks that would condem you to eternal torment because you failed to endure the years of agony he/she/it/they had lined up for you ?

Everyone has a choice, let people chose their own fate. And if the person is not able to chose for themselves, then let their friends, family and loved ones chose for them.
