NSA Official Disputes Chief's Claim That Agency Doesn't Collect American Data

Mattygfunk1 Keyloggers coming to a PC near you... (214 comments)

When did it become permissible to build data profiles on everyone, including your average law abiding citizen?

Investigating "terrorists" is one thing, but openly (or in this case secretively) spying on everyone is now considered ok by those in charge?

The "system" is corrupt.

UK ISP Asks Religious Groups To Set Parental Controls

Mattygfunk1 Mixed message (205 comments)

We can envisage a situation where people would only block known malware sites... and they can allow everything else.

That appears to be not the desired situation. They're marketing it at parents, but taking a bet each way.

ICANN Mistakenly Publishes Applicant Addresses

Mattygfunk1 Confidence (52 comments)

How can anyone have confidence in ICANN's systems when they repeatedly screw up? At something like $180,000 an application, you know, maybe, they might be more careful.

The Poor Waste More Time On Digital Entertainment

Mattygfunk1 So the majority use it for... (515 comments)

So we waste technology for entertainment eh? Isn't this just the tip of the iceberg of the technological revolution? I call bullshit. Where's the percentage who use it to expand their minds?

EU Offers Google Chance To Settle Prior To Anti-Trust Enquiry

Mattygfunk1 Detailed review of competition (119 comments)

The European Commission appears to be quite specific and detailed in it's requests. It's encouraging that a body has enough resources to protect even slight issues regarding competition.

That said, "slight" might be worth millions to Google / its competitors, especially as smaller firms have complained as well as Microsoft.

Mattygfunk1 What debris? (66 comments)

What are we looking for here? Remnants of an aircraft or ship? What other debris is out there?

Am I wrong in thinking that leaving a busted up craft to sink isn't the worst crime? It's not much pollution. Is this to help looking for bodies?

Swedish Researchers Expose China's Tor-Blocking Tricks

Mattygfunk1 Re:bandwith of flash drive or SDHC card (73 comments)

The important part is that the information gets through.

Unfortunately spreading pro-freedom propaganda will get you sent to jail once you try to disseminate it further.

Revolution in China is inevitable (IMHO). Attempting to improve the current status technologically is a noble cause, by those who are free, for those who aren't.

Bill Introduced To Ban Sale of MA15+ Games To Anyone Under 18 in SA

Mattygfunk1 How to beat the system? (161 comments)

So most of us realize prohibition doesn't work, so as a non-gamer, I'm curious as top how the l33t get around the ban.

Is there a black market for R18+ games? Can you just torrent them?

Surely Aussies don't just accept that the games are censored.

Ask Slashdot: How Have You Handled Illegal Interview Topics?

Mattygfunk1 Discrimination (714 comments)

Why is Slashdot STILL posting "articles" with 15 pages containing two or three sentences per page?

Even then, the link is to the last page. Here's a slightly better page.

Anyway, on-topic, do you really want to work for a company that requires you to know your legal status prior to a job interview? Discrimination is disgusting, and as much as it may hurt, you're better off being knocked back for the job than having it present 40 hours a week.

People need to feed their families, but degrading one's self respect by accepting work where it happens is only inviting more trouble.

Safeguarding Data From Big Brother Sven?

Mattygfunk1 Server-level encryption (345 comments)

I'm starting to think that more server-level encryption will be the way of the future. With running a site comparing Australian web hosting plans, perhaps adding more detailed encryption categories will promote their use.

Windows 8 sales match it's reviews

Mattygfunk1 Mattygfunk1 writes  |  about 2 years ago

Mattygfunk1 writes "CNBC reports PC sales are down after the release of Windows 8. Emmanuel Fromont, president of the Americas division of Acer, the world’s No. 4 PC maker, said sales of the company’s Windows 8 PCs had been lower than expected. He said one factor was the system’s unfamiliar design, which appeared to be making consumers cautious.

“There was not a huge spark in the market,” Mr. Fromont said. “It’s a slow start, there’s no question.”"
