Xbox 360 To Profit Next Year, Says Bach

Maximegalon Of course, everyone wants instant gratification (132 comments)

"A vision does not take 7 years to finally break even on a yearly basis after you have lost $6 Billion."

First off, your numbers are off. The classic xbox launched 11/01. Work may have started earlier but you don't earn sales until the product comes out. Profitability is expected in 06/08, not 11/11. So you are off by 3.5 years when you say it took them "10 years" to make a profit.

Also, the last stat I saw said an estimated 5 billion lost, not 6 billion. Finally, the hardware is now making a profit for them, and the chip size reduction will only further that.

Even using your numbers of $6b over 10 years, that is only 250m per quarter. That's basically nothing to MSFT. If they can invest pocket change and get big returns down the road, why not?

"So investors would be right to be angry at Microsoft."

The last I checked, investors are pretty darn happy with MSFT's stock as a whole. As of today, they are within $1 of their 52 week high.

Maybe you should check your facts. I agree with above. It's typical US sentiment. Where is my instant gratification? I didn't get rich quick, any setback is certain doom, kill the show after two episode if the ratings don't meet expectations, etc. etc.

Maximegalon writes "Microsoft challenges gamers to increase their Gamerscores by 1,500 points in 60 days for prizes, including games. Registration begins February 12.

Late last month, rumors about an achievements-for-rewards program sprang up, postulating that Microsoft and an unnamed sponsor would team up to give out prizes based on the Xbox 360's achievement system. Today, Microsoft copped to the plan and unveiled the program's sponsor by announcing the Old Spice Experience Challenge.

Maximegalon writes "The title says it all (is anyone surprised?) It appears Sony Music and Universal Music Group are marking certain artists of theirs as "prohibited" for sharing, meaning that just because you've paid for a song, and even managed to find another Zune user on the planet Earth, doesn't mean you'll necessarily get to beam that JoJo track to another Zune via WiFi magics. In a non-scientific sampling of popular artists by Zunerama and Zune Thoughts, it looks like it's roughly 40-50 percent of artist that fall under this prohibited banner, and the worst news is that there's no warning that a song might be unsharable until you actually try to send it and fail. http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/19/universal-and-s ony-prohibit-zune-sharing-for-certain-artists/ [engadget.com]"

Maximegalon writes "The Mercury News reports, on another video download service, but this one targeted for XBOX users. From the article: http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/lo cal/15945523.htm

In the latest volley in the video game war and the battle for the digital living room, Microsoft on Monday announced plans to roll out a video download service for its Xbox 360 game console. The company plans to roll out the service on Nov. 22, the one-year anniversary of the console's launch. With the new service, certain Xbox 360 owners will be able to download a selection of movies and TV shows, including ``Superman Returns'' and ``CSI,'' to their console and watch them on their televisions. When launched, the service will be one of the first to allow consumers to directly download video — including some in high-definition format — to a living room device."
