Bill Gates Acknowledges Ctrl+Alt+Del Was a Mistake

MayonakaHa Re:Redundant keys (665 comments)

I actually use that one quite often since I work in the POS industry. Touch screens have no easy way to right-click so I tend to use that one a lot.

What Works In Education: Scientific Evidence Gets Ignored

MayonakaHa Re:D.A.R.E has no benefit (440 comments)

Cut that back to Sports and Phys Ed and that's closer to what my school district was. The music and arts programs funded themselves with fund raisers, concessions sales at sports events and other means. Hell in the music program we almost consistently made it to State UIL competition but the boosters were the ones who made the money we needed for more than the absolute basics.

It's 2013, and Windows Activation Is Still Frustrating

MayonakaHa Re:Dreamspark etc. (435 comments)

Add activation for students on top of that and you have the perfect nightmare. I went through that with my copy of Lightroom. *shudder*

Teacher Suspended Over Blog About Students

MayonakaHa Re:Not an YRO (634 comments)

Students are neither paid to teach people and assist in the development of their minds nor are they given a choice for what they do in life at this point. Teachers are expected to lead their charges in the right direction and have made the choice to be a teacher in the first place.

iPhone Alarms Hit By New Year's Bug

MayonakaHa Re:Still? (405 comments)

Hell I barely touch the text application. Between phone calls, email and Twitter DMs there's no reason I ever need to.

iPhone Alarms Hit By New Year's Bug

MayonakaHa Still? (405 comments)

Apple can't quite seem to get that alarm working right. This isn't the first time. My Android based phone hasn't had any issues with the alarm, but since I work from home it's not as much of an issue.

Ford To Offer Fuel-Saving 'Start-Stop' System

MayonakaHa Re:Why hasn't it been done before? (572 comments)

A quick Google search shows the Lupo 3L had start/stop technology. The battery size I'm unsure of but I believe it uses the same size as the other model Lupo cars, which would make it a 12v 60Ah. Varta's website shows their "Start-Stop Plus" batteries have those specs and are made for start-stop systems.

When the Senate Tried To Ban Dial Telephones

MayonakaHa Re:Forward thinkers (506 comments)

I hardly qualify as "older" and I honestly think self checkouts are a waste of time and resources. When they're properly maintained and every item is entered correctly in the system and has a bar code I'm sure they'd work perfectly. As a former retail checker for several years and a customer I know that's hardly ever the case. SKUs change too fast to keep up with sometimes and maintenance from the equipment vendors doesn't come often enough and they react too slow to emergencies. The number of times I've gotten stuck on "Please put your item in the bag" are too many because it can't detect the weight properly and not to mention it feels like the laser in the scanner is much weaker than the one on a proper checkout terminal. If there's an issue you have to wait for the single employee who manages at least four of those self checkouts to come over and fix it. Usually that means waiting for them to finish with the other one or two customers with issues.

Tracking Down Wi-Fi Interference?

Possibly, but he DID mention that the LAN works fine and anything wired up doesn't lose connectivity.

HDTV Has Ruined the LCD Market

MayonakaHa Re:couldn't agree more: 1920x1080 sucks (952 comments)

Honestly if you're working on papers on your computer most of the time, flip the monitor to vertical. Pretty much all of the "paperwork" based terminals I saw when doing printer maintenance at hospitals were mounted vertically for quick review of documents.

"No Scan, No Fly" At Heathrow and Manchester

MayonakaHa Re:What would you prefer? (821 comments)

Hop on over to El Reg and take a look at this article. While not exactly the most official study done, this show has shown that explosive ingredients can indeed be smuggled onto a plane even when going through the scanners. I believe this does qualify this whole mess as "security theater" to me.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

MayonakaHa Re:I Second this (970 comments)

I'm thinking it definitely varies by model. But yeah it always seemed to me and the other techs I worked with at my last position that Brothers were one of the bottom of the line as far as part quality. Pain in the ass to work on too. Good job on getting them anything to get off of buying inkjets. Only thing I use my inkjets for is for photo printing or business cards. Both of them are rare since I share most of my photos online, usually with Flickr. My little HP LaserJet 1020 has been a rather surprising little machine.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

MayonakaHa Re:I Second this (970 comments)

haven't had as much experience with Sammy's but they do seem a little bit harder to work on.. the engine is usually pretty solid though, Xerox and Dell have both bought a print engine design from them that's a little odd, but sturdy

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

MayonakaHa Re:I Second this (970 comments)

I've worked on lots of Brothers to be honest. I've not met a Brother I liked. I can see, though, if you've found their more compatible with your particular setup. I've got 3 HP's here at home. Two inkies which I'll throw away when they break and a little 1020 laser that's a great everyday workhorse. I've not had a compatibility problem from XP, Vista, Win7 or Linux.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

MayonakaHa Re:I Second this (970 comments)

I'll agree with you there. I've done local management/maintenance on a 500 printer site but it mostly contained HP 4000/4200 series printers. Awesome machines for general maintenance vs cost. Newer ones just don't hold a candle to them.

What Do You Do When Printers Cost Less Than Ink?

MayonakaHa Re:I Second this (970 comments)

There's one especially bad series of Brother MFCs that has a cheap toner lock linkage assembly. Brother says it only breaks if you use re manufactured toners and drums but I've seen where even both supplies replaced with OEM that's just oh so slightly out of spec will cause it to bend out of place, taking a few gears with it. Considering Brother would only pay us $35 flat rate + parts to repair their equipment under warranty it just wasn't worth it for us to be a warranty repair shop for them anymore.

Free iPod thingy

MayonakaHa MayonakaHa writes  |  more than 9 years ago So about this free iPod dealy. I was pretty skeptical, but apparently from all sources I can find, it's the real deal. The local news here even did a story on it, went through the process, and recieved their brand new iPod. Seems legit so I'm giving it a shot.

Here's my referral link. I'm being up front about it, so give it a click if you want to sign up and help me out.
