Record Set For World's Youngest Chess Champion

MintOreo Re:A soapbox for armchair gender theorists? (214 comments)

If I had Mod Points I'd mod you up. Today it's become so taboo to even hint that there are any differences between males and females that doing so social suicide. It's ridiculous. Perhaps we can subvert this by calling men testosterone and women estrogen.

New summary:

No one really knows why the best estrogen players are typically not as good at chess as the testosterone players. One theory, common among some top testosterone players, is that testosterone usually induces more aggressive behavior by nature than estrogen, and is therefore the better suited hormone for a game that simulates warfare. Another, cited in at least one university study, is that the talent pool among estrogen filled players has not been big enough to produce many great players."

Indian Launch Vehicle Explodes After Lift-Off

While I agree that the GP's behavior is silly, rude and detestable, it is almost just as rude to assume that he's an American (less so because this site is predominately US inhabited).

Survey Shows That Fox News Makes You Less Informed

MintOreo Re:People don't watch Fox News to become informed. (1352 comments)

...having already made up their minds and not wishing to be confused with the facts, they go there to have their preconceptions re-enforced.

This is true, and the exact same thing these "surveyors" were doing.

On a side note, how is the title of this slashdot summary any better than what Fox News does?

One Night Stands May Be Genetic

MintOreo Re:So? (240 comments)

Note that I said that everything you do is genetic. Getting hit by a car is not something 'you do' (unless it was intentional), its something done to you. How that affects you is something you do.

One Night Stands May Be Genetic

MintOreo Re:So? (240 comments)

And how you respond to these environments is purely genetic. The real question is what genetic determinations are more ductile to environmental influences.

Infidelity is despicable (obviously subjective), as it is deceit. Infidelity is being unfaithful- if your contract never included sexual exclusivity then not being exclusive isn't infidelity.

One Night Stands May Be Genetic

MintOreo So? (240 comments)

Spoiler alert! Every thing is genetic.

Everything everyone has ever done was determined by their genetics; that doesn't make infidelity less despicable.

Or they could cut to the chase and follow one of those penis enlargement cream spam emails.

Honestly, releasing statements like this does Wikileaks no credit. Its hard to appreciate the foundation with such a narcissist doing the PR.

Engineers Propose Lily Pad-Like Floating Cities

MintOreo Re:Tsunamis (309 comments)

I don't have the engineering degree to say with any authority that this is true, but:

As far as I can predict, I believe it would be perfectly safe from tsunamis. In typical tsunami situations the people most safe are the fishers off shore, as for them they simply feel it as a brief wave rolling under them. Once the force hits against the land mass, however, it gets ugly and destructive.

I'm sure your standard violent ocean torrent/storm is still a great danger.
