US Stealth Jet Has To Talk To Allied Planes Over Unsecured Radio

US Stealth Jet Has To Talk To Allied Planes Over Unsecured Radio

MountainMan101 Re:Ironic (270 comments)

No, the Romans had it (hence their successful invasion of Britain).

Surely they could solve this using a verbal code.

From now on, frog is me, sandwich means you and lemon means rocket. So, come on, sandwich, build me a lemon â(TM)cause froggy wants to come home.

Mission Complete! WMAP In 'Graveyard Orbit'

MountainMan101 Re:Cosmic background radiation (114 comments)

You've misunderstood the difference between doubting a theory and doubting an observable. Walking off a cliff would be stupid, it it clearly observed that things fall. On the other hand doubting that the reason is due to the attraction of masses, perhaps in favour of some alternative source of the force, does not lead to such stupid mistakes.

The original poster did not contradict the evidence for the big bang, rather the explanation.

Seven Words You Can't Say On Google Instant

MountainMan101 Is tit wrong.... (257 comments)

I just love the endless amusement of typing "Is it wrong..." into google and seeing the list (to sleep with my dog/brother/mother).

Well done Google.

VP8 Codec Coming To FFmpeg

MountainMan101 Google vs Adobe (218 comments)

On one hand Google is a friend of Adobe - mutual hatred of Apple and using Flash for You Tube, bundling Adobe Flash Player in Chrome.

On the other hand Google is a strong proponent of HTML5 + VP8, which would replace Flash in some situations.

Google seems to be the master of sitting on the fence. I mean they back the biggest competitor to the iPhone (Android) and yet remain #1 search engine on the iPhone/pad/pod.

Europe To Import Sahara Solar Power Within 5 Years

MountainMan101 Re:Yay... (450 comments)

In their native language? You mean North American Indian? Like Apache and Navajo.

Rather than learn Spanish, wouldn't spending a little bit longer learning English, history and geography help the inhabitant of the US.

Looking At Google's Flashified Chrome

MountainMan101 Yay for Google (385 comments)

Google are simply the best. They've given me free e-mail, free browser, free phone OS, free maps, and so much more.

If only everyone was as wonderful as Google. What a shame I can't vote for them in tomorrow's election.

Police In Britain Arrest Man For Bomb-Threat Joke On Twitter

MountainMan101 Re:What part of "use a proxy" can't he understand? (577 comments)

Actually, the correct verb is try and pp tried.

"He has not been tried yet."

You are correct about the verb trial meaning to test/discover the effectiveness of something.

America! It's new, and contains nothing of use. Wipe it out. Then we'll send all the religious nuts from Europe (again) to populate it (again).

Inkscape 0.47 Released

MountainMan101 Re:Great (225 comments)

I just tried it. Inkscape imported the PDF I made in it. It contained text, vectors and bitmaps and it loaded them fine. Perhaps you should file a bug for your particular case. Or are you just a freeloader - using open source software without contributing any effort, even as far as bug reporting.

Delete Data On Netbook If Stolen?

MountainMan101 Identity Theft or Physical Theft (459 comments)

If it's physical theft I would think they would bin the HDD or sell it "as is" without even looking at what's on it. Bricking it doesn't do a lot, you'd probably just replace the HDD anyway.

Identity theft is more worrying. Why not encrypt the HDD with something like Fedora / Ubuntu offers - ie an encrypted /home or MyDocuments. That way the laptop won't log on for the thief.

How To Keep a Web Site Local?

MountainMan101 Easier option (297 comments)

Would it not be easier to approve individuals than spend time unapproving anyone not from your little community. Do you threaten the intruders with pitchforks whilst crying "Are you local????".
Facebook is open to the world, but still manages to sustain small communities / groups. It's not impossible.

You could restrict your website to 127.0.0.1 - that's very local. Or you could wire all the houses together on a private subnet.

Good Physics Books For a Math PhD Student?

MountainMan101 Re:I'm gunna say this once.. (418 comments)

In the UK (and Europe I believe), it's normal to be finishing your thesis at the end of the 3rd year/first half of 4th year, I took 4 days more than 3 years. But even as a chemistry student, I did partial diff equations in the 1st year of my undergraduate (ie aged 18). So what kind of university are you at?
