Russia May Be Planning National Space Station To Replace ISS

MrIlios Come in Moonraker 5 (236 comments)

Two orbiting space stations might ignite some competition between the nations and hopefully further science for everyone. Or.....If the current cold war turns sour, we could see Jaws and James bond type characters duelling it out with frikin' lasers!

SnapChat Turns Down $3 Billion Offer From Facebook

MrIlios Why? (188 comments)

Personally, I don't see the value of SnapChat other than the large and increasing young user base it has. According to Evan Spiegal (SnapChat), the software is on a quarter of all UK smartphones (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-24925932). From my understanding, the software's main purpose is to allow a user to send a photo or video to someone else which then gets deleted immediately after viewing leaving no trace. A nice idea, but it is a false sense of security - the 'no trace' feature can not be guaranteed due to software that can intercept these pictures or videos or even another device recording what is displayed on screen. I would guess that the NSA are already 'backing-up' these pictures for anti-terrorism analysis.

ISPs To Censor Porn By Default In the UK By 2014

MrIlios Major Reduction in Internet Traffic? (310 comments)

It would be interesting to see how much impact this has on the amount of data flowing through the networks belonging to the various UK based ISP's. Also, for those users not wanting to explain why the porn box needs to be ticked to the wife/girlfriend, I can imagine there will be an increase in demand for foreign VPN connections or depending on how the filters are implemented, perhaps just using overseas DNS servers will bypass the filters.

Sharing HBO Go Accounts Could Result In Prison

MrIlios Re:dumb (221 comments)

Agreed, perhaps the on-line service should limit access to one concurrent user, I can't see how Identity theft can be applied here. Should everyone who repeats "I'm Spartacus" also be found guilty of "identity theft".

Google Security Engineer Issues Sophos Warning

MrIlios Re:Can someone explain (89 comments)

I've used Sophos for around 7 years at different organisations and have always received updates automatically over the internet every few hours. Perhaps the installation on the 'very secure network' was set up a very long time ago and never reviewed - either that or the 'very secure network' was designed not to be internet connected and the update was specified to be delivered via physical media? I've had a few issues with the software in past, including recent wide-spread false-positive problem (http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/118311.aspx), but generally I've found the central management and reporting utility to be pretty good.

To Encourage Biking, Lose the Helmets

MrIlios Re:But that's not the real problem. (1651 comments)

I wear my helmet every time I go cycling and have done for the last three years. I started wearing my helmet as soon as my wife became pregnant - she, rightfully so, insisted on it. If I was to have an accident now, my helmet might just help my kids still have a Daddy to help support them. I've had a couple of accidents from drivers not seeing me (despite a florescent jacket and lights) and pulling out of a junction in front of me. Luckily these were all low speed as I could spot that the drivers were not looking so not much damage to myself or my bike. In both accidents, a helmet made no difference, but if it reduces the risk of major injury then it makes sense for me to wear one. Also, being married means I'm less concerned how messy my hear is from wearing a helmet than when I was single!

Robotic Squirrels Battle It Out With Rattlesnakes

MrIlios Is this trait unique to the Grey Squirrel? (125 comments)

I'm guessing it's unlikely, but I was wondering if this trait can also be found in the Red Squirrel native to the UK - no rattle snake prey here, so I'm guessing this trait was never needed. Either that, or the Red's were so good at it, the rattle snakes were wiped out by starvation ;)
