Ford Develops a Way To Monitor Police Driving

NIK282000 Re:Ought to bring down ... (151 comments)

Knowing where speed traps are would make them 100% effective. The point is to reduce speeding and no one will speed if they know there is a trap on the road, no one gets a ticket and the road becomes safer. The only way in which the trap is ineffective is that it doesn't generate any cash for the department.

Along with IR and Visible light, unless you are pumping watts into a very small volume you're not going to boil your guts with wifi.

Did you use technology to get into mischief as a child?

NIK282000 That poor network (231 comments)

Between me and a few others my high school's internal network never ran faster than dialup and at least half of the computers mysteriously were converted to every version of linux that would run on that horrible hp/dell/compaq hardware.

Is Dong Nguyen Trolling Gamers With "Swing Copters"?

NIK282000 That guy is gonna be rich (113 comments)

Regardless of how "trolled" any one feels by this he gets an ad hit every time the user looses a round in the game. So do they pay him with a bucket of cash or just Apple store credit?

I've got the same problem, 10 years ago I had one device hooked right to the modem, now my basement looks like something out of The Matrix.

Which Is Better, Adblock Or Adblock Plus?

NIK282000 Neither (436 comments)

If the ads on a site are so obstructive or malicious that you want to block them then stop using that site. Blocking ads only encourages site operators to use more aggressive ad serving tactics and resorting to that kind of subsidized assault on the user is usually an indicator that the site doesn't have anything useful on it in the first place.

It would be interesting to find earth life on one of the solar system's icy moons. We have moon and Mars meteors falling to earth, what are the odds that a rock carrying hearty earth life made it out there?

Train Derailment Dumps Two 737 Fuselages Into Clark Fork River

NIK282000 Re:News for nerds? (187 comments)

Ads supply the money that runs the web. As much as Dice blows, they need to make money to keep the site up. With the readership they are hanging on to they need all the hits they can get.

A Seriously High Speed Video Camera (Video)

NIK282000 Re:Not exactly needed (62 comments)

This is not a security camera, this is a diagnostic tool, a high speed camera is the micrometer of video analysis, when you need to trouble shoot a high speed, complicated process this is the only way. This camera gives decent performance at an order of magnitude cheaper than all of it's competitors. Having a double digit resolution at 18,000fps sounds crappy but when you have a 3cm x 5cm area of interest it only takes a few more seconds of setup to make sure you get the data you need. High speed cameras are to security cameras what an oscilloscope is to a multi-meter, they are for completely different jobs.

The Nightmare On Connected Home Street

NIK282000 Re: Just run it on OpenBSD, for crying out loud. (186 comments)

Just like my house can have as many rooms as I want as long as I build them all myself. "u-compile" software is not for mass markets. Yes anyone can do it with after a serious Google session but that is more work than the average person will do for any kind of software.

$57,000 Payout For Woman Charged With Wiretapping After Filming Cops

Not to troll, but not following an improper order should not be something of which you can be "guilty." If he orders your to wash is car or pay for his coffee are you still "guilty" if you do not comply?

Canadians Protest Wind Turbines

NIK282000 NIK282000 writes  |  more than 2 years ago

NIK282000 (737852) writes "Ontario farmers rallied in downtown Toronto to protest the subsidization of wind turbines. Several of the protesters stated that they fear for the the health of their families and that they refuse to live near wind turbines. Others fear that the value of their property will be reduced significantly by the presence of turbines. With the cost of gas and oil on its way up it's a wonder that any one would be against the use of renewable energy sources."

No hand held devices in Ontario cars.

NIK282000 NIK282000 writes  |  more than 5 years ago

NIK282000 (737852) writes "In Ontario it is now a ticket-able offense to text, email or try to navigate with your GPS to cut down on accidents caused by drivers who aren't paying attention. But it seems to me that they have thrown the baby out with the bath water because it is now also a $500 fine to change your radio station, change songs on your MP3 player or even drink your morning coffee. It can also be enforced to the point where changing the climate controls on your dash can get you fined because it requires you to take your hands off the wheel. Though this was a good idea it seems to have been taken a little to far."

Q Basic

NIK282000 NIK282000 writes  |  more than 10 years ago Even with all the new, better, programming languages I still find myself messing around in Q Basic. Like the name says its Quick and Basic, like using an etch-a-scetch insted of photoshop, it still is intruiging. I find that if I can do it in QB I can do it in any other launguage. Just a thought.
